Although gabapentin is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticonvulsant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s often used off-label to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS) and other nerve conditions or neuropathic pain. It can also treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postherpetic neuralgia, a type of pain that happens after having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/shingles-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Brand names include Neurontin and Gralise. If you\u2019re breastfeeding, you should know that gabapentin is generally safe for both breastfeeding parents and their infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-gabapentin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take gabapentin while breastfeeding?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, a breastfeeding mother would be prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-for-restless-legs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin for restless legs syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or another neuropathy (nerve pain) condition, explains Rebecca Berens, MD, IBCLC, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vidafamilymed.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family practice physician and lactation consultant <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Houston, Texas: \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/restless-leg-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restless leg syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often related to iron deficiency, is common in pregnancy and postpartum. For example, if someone experienced significant blood loss during delivery, they could develop restless leg syndrome while waiting for iron levels to normalize. Chronic neuropathies, such as those linked to diabetes or past injuries, could also require ongoing gabapentin use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003322\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixed data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about gabapentin use and safety during pregnancy. Studies suggest that it may be safe in the first trimester, but toxicity increases throughout the pregnancy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the consensus among researchers and medical professionals seems to be that the use of gabapentin is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501224\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe while breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is because very little of the medication crosses into breast milk and because it does not have any effect on milk supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some available research on gabapentin and breastfeeding. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17062788\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2006 case report in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Human Lactation<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concluded that the infant dose of gabapentin was about 2.3% of the maternal dose. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16190933\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epilepsia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that gabapentin does transfer into breastmilk, but infant serum concentration was low, and no adverse effects on babies were observed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25553600\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expert consensus guideline issued in 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affirmed that gabapentin is an acceptable medication to treat restless legs syndrome during lactation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Berens emphasizes that there\u2019s little concern with taking gabapentin while breastfeeding. \u201cFrom available studies, the infant\u2019s serum concentration via breast milk is very low,\u201d she says. \u201cFor a healthy, full-term infant, especially after three months, my concerns would be minimal. For medically fragile, preterm, [or low birth weight infants], I\u2019d feel less confident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johanna-macaulay-87181726\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johanna Macaulay, RN, IBCLC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) lactation consultant at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, emphasizes getting personalized counseling regarding taking gabapentin if you are breastfeeding or pumping breastmilk for a premature baby: \u201cIn the case of a preterm or medically fragile infant, I would recommend to speak to the neonatologist or other specialists about any risks that gabapentin exposure could have. In most infants, even preemies, gabapentin would still be considered safe, but every situation is different. If the infant has certain neurological conditions, they may be more affected by exposure, or if they are on other sedating medications, their sedation could increase.\u201d This may be of greater concern if your baby has also been exposed to opioids in utero or the NICU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An alternative medication that may be prescribed is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pregabalin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregabalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501821\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information on pregabalin and breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also limited, but it also appears that it is safe and does not have adverse effects on infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-should-i-wait-to-breastfeed-after-taking-gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long should I wait to breastfeed after taking gabapentin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally taken about every eight hours. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-life of the drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults is about five to seven hours, meaning it takes about that amount of time for the body to clear about half of the dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no recommended time to wait to breastfeed after taking gabapentin. It is unknown how long gabapentin can be detected in breast milk because there is limited data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no need to wait or pump and dump breastmilk if you are taking gabapentin. This is because gabapentin in breast milk is thought to have very little, if any, effects on breastfed infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-gabapentin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of gabapentin while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General side effects of gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include dizziness, sleepiness, swelling, headache, weakness in your extremities, diarrhea, and weight gain. More serious side effects can consist of thoughts of self-harm, muscle damage, slow breathing, withdrawal, and severe allergic reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve taken gabapentin before and know that you experienced some of these side effects, discuss this with your healthcare provider. It may not be appropriate for you to take gabapentin again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re breastfeeding, the most important side effect to watch out for when taking gabapentin is sedation. \u201cGabapentin can cause sedation, and if a parent feels significantly impaired, it might impact their ability to care for the baby\u2014for example, waking up at night or safely handling the infant,\u201d Dr. Berens explains. \u201cI\u2019d recommend testing taking the medication when another adult is present to observe how you respond. If you feel loopy, unsteady, or overly sedated, I\u2019d suggest discontinuing and consulting your healthcare provider. Still,\u00a0 the vast majority of people don&#8217;t have significant sedation or side effects with it. They do really well, and it helps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it\u2019s unlikely that the amount of gabapentin excreted into breastmilk could affect your baby, it\u2019s also important to watch your baby for signs of sedation, especially for the first few days of taking gabapentin and if they were born prematurely or have other medical concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-gabapentin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take gabapentin while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin use during breastfeeding should be prescribed on a case-by-case basis. If you\u2019ve been prescribed gabapentin, you should take it as the directions state, including at the appropriate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and times of day. There is currently no recommended time to wait to breastfeed after taking gabapentin. It is important to discuss the safety of gabapentin use with your health care provider if you are taking other prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, or supplements. Also, it is best to avoid using alcohol while taking gabapentin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re breastfeeding and taking gabapentin for the first time, it is key to monitor yourself closely for side effects, especially drowsiness and sedation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in close contact with your healthcare provider to let them know how you\u2019re feeling. Dr. Berens advises, \u201cFollow up with the physician after a couple of weeks to assess tolerance and effectiveness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is generally safe to take gabapentin while breastfeeding. If you are prescribed gabapentin, be sure to tell your medical provider that you are breastfeeding and make a plan with them to monitor yourself and your baby for any adverse effects. Dr. Berens stresses, \u201cSide effects like sedation are uncommon, but they\u2019re worth monitoring. For healthy infants, the risk from breast milk exposure is minimal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macaulay adds that many healthcare professionals will warn against breastfeeding while taking a new medication without \u201cmuch <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge of if and how a medication passes into breastmilk.\u201d If parents are concerned about their medication options while breastfeeding,\u00a0 they can also contact an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for more information or look at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501922\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine LactMed database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them make an informed choice.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gabapentin is a prescription medication used to treat nerve pain and epilepsy.
