An antibiotic may be an adjunct to this treatment, and amoxicillin may be the antibiotic that is prescribed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics can be lifesaving, but they also need to be used with caution. In some cases, bacteria become able to defeat the very antibiotics that are meant to kill them. In these cases, the germs continue to grow. This is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/antibiotic-use\/data-research\/facts-stats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotic resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and when it occurs, the infections can be difficult or impossible to treat. When someone develops an antibiotic-resistant infection, the person may require costly alternative treatments, along with extended hospital stays. For those reasons, your dentist may recommend you wait a specific number of days to see if your symptoms improve before you fill your prescription. Wozniak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., BCPS, assistant dean for clinical affairs, outreach, and special projects in the School of Pharmacy at D\u2019Youville University in Buffalo, New York. \u201cIt stops the bacteria from building this wall, which they need to survive,\u201d she says. \u201cWithout a strong wall, the bacteria break down and die, allowing your body to get rid of the infection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"amoxicillin-dosage-for-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin dosage for a tooth infection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JADA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends a dose of amoxicillin 500 mg for tooth infections, three times a day for three to seven days. Ultimately, however, the dosage is based on the type and severity of the infection that&#8217;s being treated. Even when you notice an improvement in your symptoms, that doesn\u2019t mean the infection is completely cleared. \u201cIf you don\u2019t finish the amoxicillin or you skip doses, you run the risk of the infection returning or even of having it develop into an antibiotic-resistant infection,\u201d Dr. Dhake says. There are safe and effective alternatives, such as clindamycin, for those allergic to amoxicillin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-amoxicillin-doesn-t-work-for-a-dental-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if amoxicillin doesn\u2019t work for a dental infection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your symptoms don\u2019t improve after you finish your amoxicillin, call your dentist, who will reassess your condition. You may need additional tests or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/amoxicillin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
