They belong to a class of drugs called central nervous system stimulants (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cns-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/adhd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or their caregivers might have heard that there are benefits to taking both Vyvanse and Adderall. Given that, they might wonder, \u201cIs it safe to take Vyvanse and Adderall together?\u201d Here\u2019s what you need to know about taking both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vyvanse-vs-adderall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse and Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including whether it is recommended and considerations and side effects of taking more than one ADHD drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-adderall-and-vyvanse-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Adderall and Vyvanse together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is yes, but only when approved, prescribed, and monitored by a healthcare provider. Taking more than one stimulant drug is rarely recommended, and it should only be done when prescribed by a healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some cases, I will prescribe Vyvanse in the morning with a small lower dose of Adderall around noontime for people who need the benefit of the medication to last longer into the day,\u201d says Alex Dimitriu, MD, a double board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine physician and the founder of\u00a0 Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine and founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralex.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn more rare cases, I will prescribe a low dose of Adderall in the morning in addition to Vyvanse for people who need more of an effect earlier on in the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\/our-psychiatrists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sid Khurana, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, psychiatrist and cofounder of Nevada Mental Health in Las Vegas, says he also sometimes prescribes Vyvanse and Adderall together but not to be taken \u201ctogether at the same time.\u201d He warns that dosing these drugs together increases the risk of adverse events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main benefit of taking both Adderall and Vyvanse is lengthening the window of time for the medications to work. The effects of Vyvanse <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-vyvanse-take-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last up to 14 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Immediate-release <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-adderall-last\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall lasts for four to six hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while a dose of extended-release Adderall (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall-xr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lasts between eight and 12 hours. If an individual needs to control <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adult-adhd-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more than 14 hours per day, it might make sense to include both these drugs in their treatment plan. However, taking these stimulants together is rarely recommended, and it can increase the risk of side effects such as trouble sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-vyvanse-with-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take Vyvanse with Adderall<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone interested in taking both Vyvanse and Adderall should talk to a healthcare professional about the benefits versus risks of simultaneously taking two ADHD drugs. It\u2019s also important for your healthcare provider and pharmacist to know all the medications and supplements a person is taking before starting two prescription medications on the same day. Even if no interactions exist between the two drugs\u2014in this case, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vyvanse-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Adderall\u2014one or both may interact with other medicines or supplements the person takes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to remember about taking Vyvanse with Adderall is that they should never be taken at the same time and to be aware that adverse side effects may occur. Taking Vyvanse and Adderall equates to a double dose of stimulants, which can cause dangerously high blood pressure and irregular heart rate. Consult a healthcare provider about how long to wait between taking each medication. At a minimum, you should wait until the first drug has cleared from your system\u2014up to 14 hours for Vyvanse or six hours for Adderall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse and Adderall are only prescribed together on an individual, case-by-case basis, and there is not much scientific research on the use of these drugs together. It&#8217;s important to take these stimulant drugs precisely as directed. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice if you have been prescribed Vyvanse and Adderall and are unsure how to take them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-vyvanse-or-adderall-better-for-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Vyvanse or Adderall better for ADHD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Vyvanse and Adderall are sometimes prescribed together, most healthcare providers prefer to find a single best medication that will manage a patient\u2019s ADHD symptoms, according to Dr. Dimitriu. \u201cSimplicity is always best,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, which drug is better for ADHD? That depends on the patient. Vyvanse and Adderall are both approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ADHD and belong to the same drug class. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nearly identical to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vyvanse-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Vyvanse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Common side effects include decreased appetite and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-insomnia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trouble sleeping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also have similar drug interactions, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAOIs), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SSRIs), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SNRIs). That said, they are different drugs. Which one is better for ADHD may depend on a person\u2019s lifestyle, preferences, and risk of dependency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-may-be-better-for-adhd-symptoms-in-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse may be better for ADHD symptoms in children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse and Adderall are both effective treatments for ADHD. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3101887\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comparing<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-xr-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Vyvanse use in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-medication-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children with ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Vyvanse might be slightly better for ADHD. In the study, 32% of Vyvanse users reported that symptoms were \u201cvery much improved,\u201d while only 16% of Adderall XR users reported the same level of improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, this study was limited to pediatric participants. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adult-adhd-medication-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults with ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might not experience the same results. Ultimately, patients and prescribers need to work together to determine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-xr-vs-vyvanse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse or Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more effective for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-lasts-longer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse lasts longer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is a long-acting medication. Its effects last up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2873712\/#:~:text=It%20is%20efficacious%20at%20doses,that%20of%20other%20stimulant%20medications.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 hours in adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Khurana says that in most cases, Vyvanse is effective for more than twice the number of hours as regular Adderall. He says it even lasts about two hours longer than extended-release Adderall (Adderall XR).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, not everyone needs to control ADHD symptoms for 12\u201314 hours. For individuals who want to limit their medication window to work or school hours, a shorter-acting stimulant like Adderall might be better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-might-pose-less-of-an-addiction-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse might pose less of an addiction risk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Vyvanse and Adderall are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-adderall-a-controlled-substance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA black box warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to their high risk of abuse and misuse. However, Drs. Dimitriu and Khurana say Vyvanse is less likely to be abused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of Adderall kick in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-adderall-take-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within 30\u201360 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vyvanse, however, is a \u201cprodrug,\u201d which means the body needs to metabolize it to break it down to active medicine. It is not a fast-acting stimulant, and Dr. Dimitriu says this prevents it from \u201cbeing abused by snorting or injection.\u201d Dr. Khurana agrees, explaining that Vyvanse does not offer the same quick dopamine hit that Adderall does.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-might-be-better-for-medication-adherence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse might be better for medication adherence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-adherence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication adherence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to refilling and taking medication on time and as directed. It might seem obvious, but good <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9498383\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication adherence leads to fewer symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and better outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with ADHD struggle with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/teen-ADHD-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inattention and impulsivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That can make medication adherence a challenge. Vyvanse only requires one dose per day, while immediate-release Adderall is often dosed two and (rarely) three times daily. Vyvanse is also available in a chewable tablet, which some people prefer over capsules. These minor differences can improve medication adherence for people with ADHD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-is-better-for-people-with-adhd-and-binge-eating-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is better for people with ADHD and binge eating disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse isn\u2019t just an ADHD drug. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/208510lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also approved it for the treatment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/binge-eating-disorder-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binge eating disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BED). BED is a type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/eating-disorder-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characterized by uncontrollable urges to eat large amounts of food, even to the point of feeling sick. For individuals who have been diagnosed with both ADHD and BED, Vyvanse may be a better treatment option than Adderall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"adderall-is-better-for-people-with-adhd-and-narcolepsy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall is better for people with ADHD and narcolepsy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall is a well-known ADHD med, but it is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/011522s043lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/narcolepsy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narcolepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
