It\u2019s even used for organ transplantation in adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many uses, it\u2019s natural to wonder whether <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is good for tooth pain or gum inflammation. Although it\u2019s not the first treatment option healthcare providers look to, it can be helpful in certain situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-prednisone-good-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is prednisone good for tooth pain?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to guidelines from the American Dental Association, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, naproxen, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are the first-line therapy for managing mild to moderate acute dental pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on prednisone and corticosteroids in general for tooth pain management is mixed, and more controlled trials and systematic reviews<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are needed to fully understand the role that prednisone can play in dental pain relief. For instance, according to a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jada.ada.org\/article\/S0002-8177(23)00672-4\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report from the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the use of corticosteroids for surgical tooth extractions only offers a \u201ctrivial reduction in pain,\u201d and evidence is low for their efficacy in treating this condition. On the plus side,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/6401285\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence-Based Dentistry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a single 40 mg dose of prednisone proved beneficial for postoperative pain after root canal treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrednisone can be helpful when you are dealing with a situation of inflammation,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pediatricdentistryandbeyond.com\/about-us\/our-doctor\">Jasveen Singh<\/a>, DMD, pediatric dentist and owner of<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/pediatricdentistryandbeyond.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt&#8217;s really useful for managing severe swelling that can occur after an infection or oral surgery,\u201d she explains. However, it\u2019s not the typical first line of treatment for tooth pain. \u201cMost of the time, tooth pain is caused by an infection, decay, or some sort of injury, and prednisone doesn&#8217;t address those underlying issues,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are dealing with tooth pain as a result of an infection, a steroid may actually be more harmful than helpful, as it suppresses the immune system\u2019s process of fighting off infections, says <a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/doctors\/1083808588\/charles-d-azzaretti\">Charles D. Azzaretti, DDS<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director of the dental anesthesia residency training program at Family Health Centers of NYU Langone. \u201cA more appropriate medication would be an antibiotic that suppresses or kills the bacteria that are usually the agents involved in dental infections,\u201d Dr. Azzaretti explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, corticosteroids like prednisone do have their place when it comes to managing tooth infections. \u201cDepending on the clinical circumstance, a steroid might be used in conjunction with antibiotic therapy to limit infection-related swelling that is causing other problems, such as swelling that threatens a patient\u2019s airway,\u201d Dr. Azzaretti says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although prednisone is not typically the first painkiller a dentist will suggest, there are certain other situations where it can prove to be helpful, according to Dr. Singh. \u201cThis usually happens when there&#8217;s serious oral inflammation, usually following oral surgery or in cases of autoimmune diseases affecting the mouth,\u201d she says<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about nerve pain associated with dental issues? \u201cI usually wouldn&#8217;t suggest prednisone for nerve pain or for really severe pain that other painkillers can&#8217;t alleviate,\u201d Dr. Singh says, although prednisone might be the right choice if the pain primarily stems from inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-prednisone-work-to-provide-toothache-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does prednisone work to provide toothache relief?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone\u2019s main job is to decrease inflammation in the body and in the body\u2019s tissues. As such, it can work by decreasing inflammation in your mouth and surrounding areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCorticosteroids help with pain by decreasing the inflammatory response,\u201d explains<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estrinperiodontics.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nathan Estrin DMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified periodontist practicing in Sarasota, Florida. Dr. Estrin says that decreasing inflammation is helpful in certain dental situations, but not all. It\u2019s vital to understand and identify the reason behind your dental pain so that it can be properly treated, Dr. Estrin explains. \u201cI caution patients against masking the symptoms without treating the cause.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Singh explains, when you have inflammation, you\u2019ll experience swelling and pressure on your nerves, which increases pain. \u201cPrednisone is a powerful corticosteroid that cuts right through that inflammation,\u201d she says. \u201cThis can really reduce the pain, especially after procedures like oral surgery or in conditions like pulpitis or abscesses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-prednisone-to-work-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take prednisone to work for tooth pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Singh, you\u2019ll probably notice a reduction in symptoms soon after taking prednisone for tooth pain. \u201cYou can expect to start feeling better between one to four hours after that first pill kicks in,\u201d she says. \u201cThe full change usually happens within 24\u201348 hours as the inflammation calms down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Singh stresses that prednisone should only be given for short periods and not without identifying the cause of pain. \u201cPrednisone is usually prescribed for a short duration in dental cases to minimize risks, and it&#8217;s important to emphasize that it is part of a broader treatment plan, often alongside antibiotics or dental treatments to address the root cause of the pain,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prednisone-dosage-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone dosage for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no specific guidelines about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for tooth pain. As Claudia Cometa, Pharm.D., founder and CEO at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peaceadvocacygroup.com\/about-patient-advocacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peace Advocacy Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, points out, the study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence-Based Dentistry <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that 40 mg of prednisone is often effective for postoperative pain. That dose worked best if given right before dental treatment, with effectiveness lasting up to 24 hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Singh says she normally prescribes 20\u201340 mg of prednisone daily over three to five days. \u201cYou also want to make sure to taper off the dose gradually to sidestep any nasty side effects,\u201d she explains. \u201cDepending on how severe your situation is, your doctor may adjust the dosage and the frequency of administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"potential-side-effects-of-prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential side effects of prednisone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone isn\u2019t without<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prednisone-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPrednisone can cause a laundry list of side effects, such as nausea, insomnia if taken too close to bedtime, and mood changes,\u201d Cometa shares. For most people who take prednisone on a short-term basis, the risk of serious side effects is low.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-prednisone-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to prednisone for tooth pain\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted by the American Dental Association, NSAIDs and acetaminophen are recommended to treat tooth pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, NSAIDs do a great job at reducing swelling, especially after dental procedures. They work well for typical dental aches and are even more effective when combined with other treatments like antibiotics or root canals that address the root of the problem,\u201d Dr. Singh says. Although acetaminophen doesn\u2019t address inflammation, it can reduce pain, she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cometa says that in addition to these options, local anesthetics can be helpful. \u201cLocal anesthetics are also used by dentists to help numb and mask pain in the area where a procedure is being performed,\u201d Dr. Singh says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, before you try any medication to help treat your dental pain, you should check with your dentist or healthcare provider who\u2019s familiar with any health conditions you have or other medications you\u2019re taking.
