Both drugs are used to treat anxiety, and taking both together can help to quickly reduce symptoms, particularly in the interim, while your healthcare provider is working to determine the best treatment plan for your long-term health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ankur-bindal-m-d-m-p-h-fapa-faasm-25390311\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ankur Bindal, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified psychiatrist and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmgpsychiatry.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KAB Medical Group Inc.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in California, says that the drugs can safely be taken together, but he recommends proceeding with caution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn specific situations where a doctor carefully monitors dosage and potential side effects, [taking buspirone and hydroxyzine together] might be considered safe for short-term use, particularly for individuals experiencing mild anxiety symptoms with occasional bouts of severe itching or allergic reactions where the sedative effect of hydroxyzine is necessary for symptom management,\u201d he explains. \u201cHowever, if your physician approves this combination, the medications need to be started at a lower dose, with close monitoring, special caution to be taken in older patients, and avoidance of driving or operating machinery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individually, buspirone and hydroxyzine have different benefits in treating anxiety. Hydroxyzine is a faster-acting drug used for more immediate treatment needs. Buspirone, on the other hand, takes longer to build up in your system and become effective and is often used for chronic anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it can take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/about-mental-illness\/treatments\/mental-health-medications\/types-of-medication\/buspirone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three to four weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to begin to see a change in your anxiety symptoms from taking buspirone, hydroxyzine may be used in the meantime to help ease immediate anxiety symptoms such as severe panic attacks or anxiety attacks. You should also avoid consuming alcohol while taking buspirone and hydroxyzine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults or patients who have been diagnosed with kidney or liver problems should consult with a healthcare provider before taking buspirone with hydroxyzine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-after-taking-buspirone-can-you-take-hydroxyzine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after taking buspirone can you take hydroxyzine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking buspirone with hydroxyzine, it\u2019s best to wait a few hours after taking buspirone before taking hydroxyzine to reduce the chances of unwanted side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone doses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/buspirone-hcl\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start at 5-15 milligrams (mg)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will be prescribed to take two to three times daily, depending on the dose.
