Does <\/span>tramadol<\/span> help with tooth pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cI’ve found <\/span>tramadol<\/span> to be a real huge help for managing moderate to severe tooth pain when basic <\/span>over-the-counter<\/span> meds just don’t cut it,\u201d said Dr. Avi Israeli, a dentist at Sage Dental in New Jersey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tramadol<\/span> belongs to a group of drugs called <\/span>opiates<\/span>, which are typically stronger <\/span>pain relievers<\/span> compared to <\/span>analgesics<\/span> like Tylenol (<\/span>acetaminophen<\/span>, <\/span>paracetamol<\/span>) and <\/span>nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/span> (<\/span>NSAIDs<\/span>) like <\/span>ibuprofen<\/span>. They can be used to treat <\/span>acute pain<\/span> (sudden pain) and <\/span>chronic pain<\/span> (long-term pain).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Israeli explained how <\/span>opioids<\/span> work, \u201c<\/span>Tramadol<\/span> targets <\/span>opioid<\/span> receptors<\/span> in our brains, changing how we perceive pain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Opioid analgesics<\/span>, which work via the <\/span>central nervous system<\/span> (<\/span>CNS<\/span>), are a class IV controlled substance, meaning they have a high likelihood of misuse or abuse. Other <\/span>opioids<\/span> include <\/span>hydrocodone<\/span> and <\/span>oxycodone<\/span>. <\/span>Healthcare<\/span> providers are less likely to prescribe these medications, even more so in recent years, due to patient risk and the possibility of addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also <\/span>side effects of tramadol<\/span> to consider, with some including <\/span>constipation<\/span>, <\/span>drowsiness<\/span>, feelings of <\/span>sedation<\/span> or fatigue, and <\/span>serotonin<\/span> syndrome. <\/span>Tramadol<\/span> also has interactions with several drugs, like monoamine oxidase <\/span>inhibitors<\/span> (MAOIs) for depression. While <\/span>tramadol<\/span> would be a good treatment for tooth pain and <\/span>toothaches<\/span>, due to the addictive nature of narcotics like <\/span>tramadol<\/span>, it\u2019s not the first line of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Typically, dentists will perform dental procedures to address what\u2019s causing the tooth pain and recommend <\/span>over-the-counter<\/span> pain relievers<\/span> like <\/span>ibuprofen<\/span> or <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> for <\/span>pain management<\/span>. If the <\/span>toothache<\/span> is causing <\/span>severe pain<\/span>, it is possible your dentist may prescribe <\/span>tramadol<\/span>. If <\/span>tramadol<\/span> alone doesn\u2019t address the tooth pain, <\/span>tramadol<\/span> can be taken with Tylenol for extra <\/span>pain relief<\/span>. It is important to address the underlying issue to relieve tooth pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the downsides of <\/span>tramadol<\/span>, <\/span>NSAIDS<\/span> may work better for oral pain compared to other treatments. A 2023 system review looked at pain from <\/span>tooth extractions<\/span> in adults. When it came to treating tooth pain, the researchers concluded, \u201c<\/span>NSAIDs<\/span> with or without <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> result in better pain-related outcomes than <\/span>opioids<\/span> with or without <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How fast does <\/span>tramadol<\/span> work for tooth pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n

In general, <\/span>tramadol<\/span> will work for most people. However, genetic factors may make some people poor metabolizers of <\/span>tramadol<\/span>. This characteristic is mostly found in a small percentage of African American and Caucasian populations, with Asian populations having the lowest instances of this trait.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tramadol<\/span> dosage for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cI always think about a person\u2019s age, overall health, and pain severity to change the dosage appropriately while being mindful of dependency risks and <\/span>side effects<\/span>,\u201d said Dr. Israeli.<\/span><\/p>\n

The standard <\/span>prescribing<\/span> dosage for <\/span>tramadol<\/span> for adults experiencing tooth pain is a 50 mg to 100 mg tablet once every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. The maximum dosage of <\/span>tramadol<\/span> is 400 mg per day. Tramadol is not typically used for pediatric dental patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tramadol<\/span> is the generic name for the drug, but it\u2019s also sold under Ultram. Ultram is prescribed in instant-release (IR) and extended-release (ER) forms. The Ultram IR dosage is the same as regular <\/span>tramadol<\/span>. The starting dosage for Ultram ER is 100 mg to 300 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 300 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why would a dentist prescribe <\/span>tramadol<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cI could see a dentist prescribe <\/span>tramadol<\/span> if there was a major surgery that required full mouth reconstruction, but for most tooth pain, dentists would not prescribe <\/span>tramadol<\/span>,\u201d said Dr. Rodriguez.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Israeli agreed, \u201cI turn to <\/span>tramadol<\/span> for really intense, sharp pain, especially after <\/span>dental surgery<\/span> or when an infection won\u2019t respond to simpler treatments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>tramadol<\/span> is a strong <\/span>painkiller<\/span>, it\u2019s typically not the first line of defense against low to <\/span>moderate pain<\/span>. When considering a <\/span>painkiller<\/span> for tooth pain, most dentists would agree that there are better choices with fewer risks than <\/span>tramadol<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tramadol<\/span> alternatives for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cIt’s important to know that <\/span>tramadol<\/span> isn’t my first choice,\u201d said Dr. Israeli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Typically, the first choice for dentists is <\/span>over-the-counter<\/span> (<\/span>OTC<\/span>) pain medications, including <\/span>NSAIDS<\/span> like <\/span>ibuprofen<\/span> (Advil, Motrin) or <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> (Tylenol). <\/span>NSAIDs<\/span> work by blocking the <\/span>enzyme<\/span> prostaglandin,<\/span> which gives the body pain signals. Acetaminophen is believed to work in a similar way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over-the-counter<\/span> pain medications are the best <\/span>painkillers<\/span> for tooth pain as they\u2019re non-addictive, affordable, and readily available at your local pharmacy. The dentist can prescribe prescription-strength ibuprofen if the <\/span>over-the-counter<\/span> dosage isn\u2019t enough to combat tooth pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NSAIDs<\/span> can also be <\/span>used in combination<\/span><\/a> with <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> for relief. A <\/span>2013 review<\/span><\/a> that looked at patients <\/span>who<\/span> underwent <\/span>oral surgery<\/span> for <\/span>third-molar extractions<\/span> (wisdom tooth removal) found a combination of <\/span>ibuprofen<\/span> and <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> \u201cmay be a more effective <\/span>analgesic<\/span>, with fewer untoward effects\u201d when compared to formulations with <\/span>opioids<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor tougher cases, I might suggest a combination of <\/span>acetaminophen<\/span> with <\/span>codeine<\/span> or another <\/span>non-opioid<\/span> painkiller<\/span>,\u201d added Dr. Israel. When that doesn\u2019t cut it, a doctor may prescribe an <\/span>opioid<\/span> painkiller<\/span> like <\/span>tramadol<\/span>, as it\u2019s stronger for most individuals than <\/span>ibuprofen<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, if you want relief, there is one thing even more critical than treating tooth pain. Dr. Israel advised, \u201cAddressing the root of the problem, if it\u2019s an infection or inflammation, is always important.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also common for <\/span>dental practices<\/span> to apply local <\/span>anesthetic<\/span> during <\/span>dentistry<\/span> procedures to help provide relief for tooth pain and any uncomfortableness from the operation itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you have tooth pain for longer than a couple of days, it\u2019s important to seek treatment from a dentist to find the underlying cause.
