They can be used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acute pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sudden pain) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (long-term pain).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Israeli explained how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> targets <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receptors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our brains, changing how we perceive pain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioid analgesics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which work via the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are a class IV controlled substance, meaning they have a high likelihood of misuse or abuse. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrocodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxycodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers are less likely to prescribe these medications, even more so in recent years, due to patient risk and the possibility of addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to consider, with some including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, feelings of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or fatigue, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has interactions with several drugs, like monoamine oxidase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAOIs) for depression. While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be a good treatment for tooth pain and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toothaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to the addictive nature of narcotics like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s not the first line of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, dentists will perform dental procedures to address what\u2019s causing the tooth pain and recommend <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain relievers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toothache<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is causing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is possible your dentist may prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is important to address the underlying issue to relieve tooth pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the downsides of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may work better for oral pain compared to other treatments. A 2023 system review looked at pain from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tooth extractions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults. However, genetic factors may make some people poor metabolizers of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The maximum dosage of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 400 mg per day. Tramadol is not typically used for pediatric dental patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the generic name for the drug, but it\u2019s also sold under Ultram. Ultram is prescribed in instant-release (IR) and extended-release (ER) forms. The Ultram IR dosage is the same as regular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The starting dosage for Ultram ER is 100 mg to 300 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 300 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-would-a-dentist-prescribe-tramadol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would a dentist prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could see a dentist prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if there was a major surgery that required full mouth reconstruction, but for most tooth pain, dentists would not prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Dr. Rodriguez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Israeli agreed, \u201cI turn to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for really intense, sharp pain, especially after <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dental surgery<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or when an infection won\u2019t respond to simpler treatments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a strong <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painkiller<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s typically not the first line of defense against low to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When considering a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painkiller<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for tooth pain, most dentists would agree that there are better choices with fewer risks than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tramadol-alternatives-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alternatives for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s important to know that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn&#8217;t my first choice,\u201d said Dr. Israeli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the first choice for dentists is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) pain medications, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Advil, Motrin) or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Tylenol). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work by blocking the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enzyme<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostaglandin,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which gives the body pain signals. Acetaminophen is believed to work in a similar way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pain medications are the best <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painkillers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for tooth pain as they\u2019re non-addictive, affordable, and readily available at your local pharmacy. The dentist can prescribe prescription-strength ibuprofen if the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage isn\u2019t enough to combat tooth pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37634915\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used in combination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for relief. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23904576\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that looked at patients <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> underwent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral surgery<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third-molar extractions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (wisdom tooth removal) found a combination of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cmay be a more effective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analgesic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with fewer untoward effects\u201d when compared to formulations with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor tougher cases, I might suggest a combination of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">codeine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-opioid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painkiller<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d added Dr. Israel. When that doesn\u2019t cut it, a doctor may prescribe an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painkiller<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it\u2019s stronger for most individuals than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you want relief, there is one thing even more critical than treating tooth pain. Dr. Israel advised, \u201cAddressing the root of the problem, if it\u2019s an infection or inflammation, is always important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also common for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dental practices<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to apply local <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anesthetic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dentistry<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> procedures to help provide relief for tooth pain and any uncomfortableness from the operation itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you have tooth pain for longer than a couple of days, it\u2019s important to seek treatment from a dentist to find the underlying cause.
