It is also prescribed<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lorazepam-for-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label as a sleep aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or someone in your care has insomnia along with anxiety or depression, you might wonder whether it is okay to take trazodone and lorazepam together. The answer depends on the circumstances. Below, our experts unpack safety, side effects, and other considerations to know before combining trazodone and lorazepam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-trazodone-and-lorazepam-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take trazodone and lorazepam together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take trazodone and lorazepam together, but there are risks, and it ultimately depends on various factors that should be considered on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone and lorazepam are sometimes prescribed to be taken on the same day but not at the same time. For instance, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sid Khurana, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, psychiatrist and cofounder of Nevada Mental Health, says someone might take a nightly dose of trazodone for chronic insomnia while taking lorazepam during the day if and when a panic attack strikes. Simultaneous dosing is not recommended \u201cbecause we don\u2019t want someone\u2019s respiratory system to get too depressed,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconpsych.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Dimitriu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a double-board-certified psychiatrist, sleep medicine physician, and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine, says that while there are no known interactions between lorazepam and trazodone, he considers it ideal to take one or the other\u2014not both. He also says trazodone is usually preferred because it is \u201cgentler\u201d and safer for long-term use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, trazodone and lorazepam are prescribed together when necessary\u2014though usually during a short-term period of acute treatment. \u201cWe use the combination of trazodone and lorazepam on a daily basis,\u201d says Renee Solomon, a clinical psychologist and the clinical director and CEO of<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forwardrecovery.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forward Recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an addiction rehabilitation center in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen clients are coming in detoxing from drugs and alcohol, they are often prescribed lorazepam to deal with the dangers and side effects of withdrawal. Sleepiness, combined with lorazepam\u2019s potential for respiratory suppression, can be dangerous.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Anyone who wants to take trazodone and lorazepam together should speak with their healthcare provider first. It is critical to get medical advice before combining medications, as combining drugs increases the risk of interactions, side effects, and other adverse events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-trazodone-or-lorazepam-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is trazodone or lorazepam better?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone and lorazepam are very different medications. Which one is better depends on an individual&#8217;s symptoms and medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5842888\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has repeatedly demonstrated traxodone\u2019s effectiveness as a sleep aid. Lorazepam has also been proven effective for sleep trouble\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532890\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety-induced insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically. But beyond both helping treat sleep difficulties, these medications are not similar, which explains the lack of head-to-head comparisons in scientific research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-class\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug class<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone and lorazepam belong to two different drug classes. Trazodone is an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is a serotonin antagonist and a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Which drug is best depends on the condition being treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone is FDA approved and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9856641\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proven effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for depression. However, it is most widely used for the treatment of insomnia. Other less common<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470560\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label uses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance misuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulimia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorazepam is FDA approved for anxiety, anxiety-related depression, and long-lasting seizures. It is a fast-acting anti-anxiety medication that is favored in in-patient psychiatric settings. Off-label uses include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting from cancer treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"effectiveness-for-sleep-issues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectiveness for sleep issues<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoctors often try to use trazodone first as it is a gentler agent, less habit forming, and not a controlled substance,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cBecause trazodone is gentler, it may take longer to work and [may] not feel quite as strong as lorazepam,\u201d says Dr. Dimitriu. \u201cHowever, trazodone is much better in the long-term and can actually improve sleep architecture, which is the opposite effect of lorazepam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, even though lorazepam might help someone fall asleep more quickly, especially if sleep troubles are linked to anxiety, it\u2019s not the best or safest long-term treatment for insomnia or sleep issues. Therefore, trazodone is better for long-term treatment of insomnia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"common-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effect of trazodone is drowsiness. Other common<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ed3039d8-3d27-4b71-a4b0-812943c9457f#section-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of trazodone include dry mouth, lightheadedness, and headaches. \u201cTrazodone can also make some people dizzy, and it can give them nausea and potentially [cause] vomiting,\u201d Dr. Khurana says. It is also important to tell your healthcare provider about other medicines (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements) and health conditions (including pregnancy) before taking trazodone, lorazepam, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a681038.html#precautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical warnings associated with trazodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an increased risk of suicidal thinking. Trazodone has a boxed warning (also called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) about the increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults taking antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. There is also a risk of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/serotonin-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can occur when serotonin levels get dangerously high. If you experience extreme mood swings and changes in mental health, report the symptoms to your healthcare provider immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682053.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a boxed warning about an increased risk of serious or life-threatening breathing problems and sedation. Dr. Khurana warns that lorazepam should never be mixed with alcohol as there is a risk of \u201cshutting down your respiratory system.\u201d The boxed warning also indicates that there is a serious risk of abuse, misuse, and dependency when taking benzodiazepines like lorazepam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The out-of-pocket costs of trazodone and lorazepam depend on the dosage, insurance coverage, and preferred pharmacy. The retail cost of a daily dose of trazodone is lower than lorazepam, but actual costs will vary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance, trazodone costs about $38 for 30, 50 mg tablets. When used for depression, trazodone is dosed two or three times daily, so the average out-of-pocket cost could be $114 per month for some patients. When taken off-label for insomnia, trazodone is only dosed once per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance, lorazepam costs about $29 for 30, 0.5 mg tablets.
