Fortunately, there are many different medications available for the treatment and prevention of migraine, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> orally disintegrating tablets (ODT). \u201cNurtec can be used not only at the onset of a migraine attack to relieve pain but also to prevent future migraine occurrences when taken every other day continuously,\u201d says neurologist Lauren R. Natbony, MD, the Medical Director of Integrative Headache Medicine of New York and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. \u201cThis versatility makes it an excellent option for patients requiring acute and preventive treatment in one.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what happens if you hurt your back or stub your toe while taking Nurtec (rimegepant)? Or if you have a breakthrough migraine that\u2019s just unbearable? It\u2019s perfectly safe to take another pain reliever like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on Nurtec. Here\u2019s everything you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"combining-nurtec-with-over-the-counter-pain-relievers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining Nurtec with over-the-counter pain relievers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can take as-needed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-otc-anti-inflammatory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC pain relievers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, while<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Nurtec ODT,\u201d affirms Luke Hentrich, Pharm.D., an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Science at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy. Nurtec belongs to a drug class called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cgrp-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antagonists, also known as gepants. While it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist before combining medications, there are no known drug interactions between gepants and over-the-counter pain relievers. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/labeling.pfizer.com\/ShowLabeling.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient information for Nurtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the only reason listed for which people should not take the medication is if they have known allergic reactions to rimegepant or one of the other ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you do need to take another pain reliever with Nurtec, the safest OTC pain relievers are acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/integrativeheadacheny.com\/about-dr-lauren-r-natbony\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Natbony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says. Naproxen is sold under the brand name Aleve, while ibuprofen is the active ingredient in Advil and Motrin. However, it\u2019s important not to overdo it with OTC pain relievers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is one caveat: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-overuse-headache\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the medication wears off. \u201cTaking OTC pain relievers more than 15 days per month may lead to what is known as medication overuse headache,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uthsc.edu\/faculty\/profile\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hentrich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you are already dealing with migraine headaches, that\u2019s the last thing you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurtec coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naproxen coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"precautions-and-contraindications-while-on-nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precautions and contraindications while on Nurtec<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurtec is broken down in the liver by the CYP3A4 enzyme. For this reason, any medications, supplements, or foods that interfere with this enzyme should be avoided while you\u2019re taking Nurtec. Drugs that inhibit the action of this enzyme may increase levels of Nurtec in your body and increase side effects. Drugs that induce the action of this enzyme reduce levels of Nurtec and make it less effective. Some examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter supplements, such as St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics, including clarithromycin and erythromycin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiseizure drugs, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and cenobamate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this is not a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-interactions-labeling\/healthcare-professionals-fdas-examples-drugs-interact-cyp-enzymes-and-transporter-systems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/image?imageKey=CARD\/76992\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variety of medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that interact with Nurtec. You should always seek medical advice from a healthcare professional about any medications you\u2019re taking before you start taking Nurtec to make sure none interfere with its effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not take Nurtec ODT \u201cwith grapefruit juice, as it may increase Nurtec ODT levels and increase the incidence of side effects,\u201d explains Dr. Hentrich. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nurtec.com\/side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects of Nurtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether you\u2019re taking it for acute treatment of migraine or preventively, are nausea, stomach pain, or indigestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re prone to nausea, taking Nurtec with a small snack or light meal can help alleviate discomfort,\u201d says Dr. Natbony. \u201cTo prevent side effects, stick to the prescribed dosage and do not take more than one dose in 24 hours or exceed 18 doses in 30 days.\u201d If you do experience intolerable side effects, stop taking the Nurtec so you can find a different treatment\u2014there are many others that may be better for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-mix-pain-relievers-with-other-migraine-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you mix pain relievers with other migraine medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost migraine medications can be safely combined with over-the-counter pain relievers when necessary,\u201d says Dr. Natbony. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/24998-triptans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gepants, for instance, are typically taken alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs] like ibuprofen and naproxen or acetaminophen for added pain relief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you should not take over-the-counter NSAIDs if you are taking a prescription NSAID for migraines, such as Cambia (diclofenac potassium) or Elyxyb (celecoxib). The active ingredients work the same way to reduce pain as ibuprofen does, so taking them at the same time could increase your risk of stomach irritation, gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney strain, or liver problems, says Dr. Natbony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that some OTC pain relievers are combination products, meaning they contain additional ingredients that could increase your risk of side effects. \u201cSome OTC acetaminophen products that contain caffeine, as well as NSAIDs, may increase your blood pressure if they are taken frequently over long periods, which is a monitoring consideration with triptans,\u201d says Dr. Hentrich.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to take an OTC pain reliever like Tylenol or ibuprofen while taking Nurtec to treat migraine headaches, it\u2019s perfectly safe to do so\u2014they won\u2019t interfere with Nurtec\u2019s ability to treat your migraine pain. Just be sure not to overdo it, as that can cause rebound headaches that leave you in a cycle of pain and discomfort. Even though you likely have a host of OTC pain relievers in your medicine cabinet, be sure to speak to your healthcare provider before changing your migraine treatment regimen or supplementing with other medications. Doing so will ensure that you\u2019re effectively treating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/migraine-definition\/#:~:text=Throbbing%2C%20stabbing%2C%20or%20pulsing%20unilateral,hours%20to%20a%20few%20days.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine symptoms<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without unpleasant side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 39 million Americans live with migraine headaches.
