Here&#8217;s what to know if you&#8217;re taking this Rx.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-bactrim-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Bactrim works<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics work in one of two ways: killing bacteria (bactericidal) or inhibiting its growth (bacteriostatic), says David Cutler, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. He says Bactrim works <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;arresting the development&#8221; of bacteria so that it&#8217;s unable to multiply and survive\u2014inhibiting enzymes that it needs to function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/215162\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work together <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to inhibit bacterial folate synthesis, a process required for bacterial growth and replication,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medvidi.com\/blog\/author\/dr-michael-chichak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Chichak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a general practitioner and Medical Director at MEDvidi. S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ulfamethoxazole interferes with the bacterial synthesis of folic acid, which is essential for nucleic acid production (the DNA in bacteria). At the same time, trimethoprim further blocks a different step in the same pathway. This dual action makes Bactrim effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Chichak, Bactrim begins to work within a few hours of the first dose. Still, the time required to clear the infection varies according to the condition being treated and the severity of the infection. While you may start to see improvement within 48 to 72 hours, it&#8217;s crucial to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to ensure the infection is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/finish-antibiotics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully eradicated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-foods-to-avoid-with-bactrim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 foods to avoid with Bactrim<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim may be affected by certain foods, which could either diminish its effectiveness or exacerbate side effects. That&#8217;s because alcohol weakens your immune system, and you want it to be in full working order while you recover. But that&#8217;s not all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to worsening GI side effects, certain antibiotics, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/metronidazole-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tinidazole, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, should never be mixed with alcohol. Dr. Chichak says the combination can lead to what&#8217;s known as a &#8220;disulfiram-like reaction,&#8221; which causes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/consumer-health\/expert-answers\/antibiotics-and-alcohol\/faq-20057946\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like headache, nausea, vomiting, fast heart rate, and flushing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-potassium-rich-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Potassium-rich foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Bactrim has been shown to raise potassium levels in some people, particularly those with kidney problems,&#8221; says Dr. Chichak. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/0003-4819-119-4-199308150-00008\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, trimethoprim can interfere with potassium secretion in the kidneys. Consuming too many potassium-rich foods, like bananas, oranges, and spinach, may cause dangerously high potassium levels (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15184-hyperkalemia-high-blood-potassium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperkalemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), causing serious symptoms such as muscle weakness, trouble breathing, severe abdominal pain, and heart rhythm disturbances, says Dr. Chichak.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s no explicit reason to avoid caffeine on Bactrim, but it is a diuretic that can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/caffeinated-drinks\/faq-20057965\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dehydration <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in large quantities. If you&#8217;re taking any over-the-counter or prescription drugs or dietary supplements, it&#8217;s best to consult your healthcare provider for medical advice, as some may interact with Bactrim.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-should-you-eat-while-taking-bactrim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0What should you eat while taking Bactrim?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Bactrim does not require any specific food to enhance absorption, as it is absorbed well on an empty stomach,&#8221; says Dr. Chichak. However, if it causes nausea or stomach discomfort, he recommends taking it with a light meal (such as toast, eggs, or applesauce) to ease symptoms without significantly impacting its effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, Dr. Chichak recommends incorporating the following foods into your diet while taking Bactrim:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Probiotic-rich foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like yogurt or kefir can help maintain gut health and prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High-fiber foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as oats, whole grains, and leafy greens can aid digestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hydrating foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like watermelon and cucumber, along with plenty of water, help to stay hydrated and counteract potential dehydration caused by Bactrim side effects like diarrhea.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"gastrointestinal-side-effects-of-bactrim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal side effects of Bactrim<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
