However, taking this medication is a long-term commitment\u2014and one that can be expensive. Enter the latest trend: microdosing, or taking very small amounts of a drug. Many are hoping to reap the benefits of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists (or GLP-1 agonists) like Ozempic without taking the full recommended dosage\u2014to save money on injector pens, to reduce side effects, or to manage the amount of weight lost. It\u2019s gaining popularity among influencers on social media, in some wellness circles, and among regular folks who just want to lose a few pounds without breaking the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can say that the concept of microdosing Ozempic is something gaining attention, and patients may naturally have questions about it,\u201d says Annie DePasquale, MD, a family medicine physician and founder of Collaborating Docs in Arlington, Virginia. However, experts question whether taking a small dose, or microdose, of this kind of medication actually works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-microdose-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you microdose Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microdosing Ozempic means taking less than your prescribed amount or an amount smaller than the smallest dose available. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage amounts of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg,1 mg, and 2 mg, injected once a week. Typically, people begin by taking 0.25 mg of Ozempic once a week for four weeks. At week 5, they move up to a 0.5 mg dose once per week. People who have trouble controlling their blood sugar on that amount may need to bump up to 1 mg per week for four weeks\u2014or even 2 mg per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-time-to-inject-ozempic\/\">When is the best time to inject Ozempic?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Ozempic comes in a prefilled pen, a user has to turn a wheel on the device to measure the dose. The wheel clicks as it turns. A user could dispense a smaller dose by carefully managing how they dispense it, also known as \u201ccounting clicks.\u201d Or, a person would need to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-compounded-semaglutide-made-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to obtain the smaller dose. The specific amount of the microdose could vary widely, depending on what someone decides to take and how accurately they select the dose. Some studies have reported people taking doses of semaglutide as low as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9758543\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.05 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microdosing Ozempic is \u201cusing these medications in a smaller dose than what is clinically validated,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alexandrasowamd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandra Sowa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an obesity physician and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/the-ozempic-revolution-a-doctor-s-proven-plan-for-success-to-help-you-reverse-obesity-end-yo-yo-dieting-and-protect-yourself-from-disease-alexandra-so\/21847627\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ozempic Revolution<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While many people take Ozempic for its weight-loss benefits, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally approved this medication to help people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control their blood sugar levels. However, doses smaller than the FDA-approved ones haven\u2019t been studied to be effective for blood sugar control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA approved another version of the injectable semaglutide, Wegovy, specifically to help people with obesity or who are overweight and have a weight-related medical condition.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-doses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy comes in five strengths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 0.25 mg. 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg. People who take Wegovy also start with a weekly 0.25 mg dose, and they eventually work their way up to a maintenance dose of either 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, people who take medications like Ozempic and Wegovy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiasurgery.org\/news\/ozempic-effect-everything-you-need-know-about-medical-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lose 15% to 20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their body weight, although this can vary. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1136\/jim-2021-001952\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">results of the STEP clinical trial program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that people who took a higher weekly dose (2.4 mg) of semaglutide tended to lose more weight than people on a smaller weekly dose (1 mg). Microdosing could result in less or slower weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-are-people-microdosing-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are people microdosing Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons someone might want to use Ozempic at much lower dosage levels than usually prescribed. Some common reasons offered as potential benefits of microdosing include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"controlling-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Controlling weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients believe that they don\u2019t need a high dose of Ozempic because they don\u2019t want to lose a large amount of weight. Or, they are reluctant to take the full dose because of the stigma associated with being overweight and taking medication to help. Some people seem to think, \u201cI don\u2019t really need it if I\u2019m taking less than what my doctor prescribed,\u201d says Dr. Sowa. \u201cIt\u2019s rooted in weight bias.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anecdotal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/articles\/can-microdosing-weight-loss-drugs-like-ozempic-help-you-lose-weight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveal that others use microdosing as a maintenance dose to stay at a steady weight after initial weight loss on a higher dose of Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"quieting-the-food-noise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quieting the \u201cfood noise\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications like semaglutide work, in part, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/dom.14280\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suppressing the appetite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many people who take these meds talk about how they no longer think about food or eating as much as they once did. In addition to quieting their cravings and reducing their hunger, the medication also helps with satiety. They eat, and they feel full sooner. Some people seem to believe that they don\u2019t need a full dose to receive the appetite-curbing, cravings-reducing benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"decreasing-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreasing side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 medications are effective but are known to cause gastrointestinal side effects. Some people turn to microdosing to try to minimize <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like nausea, vomiting, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile this practice is not clinically supported, some theories suggest that microdosing may minimize side effects like nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort while still providing some level of appetite suppression or metabolic benefit,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collaboratingdocs.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. DePasquale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHowever, this approach has not been rigorously studied, and dosing outside of approved guidelines may result in suboptimal outcomes or unforeseen risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lowering-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lowering cost<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and Wegovy are expensive, and insurance coverage varies widely. Your insurance company may only pay for part of the cost of Ozempic if you have Type 2 diabetes. Or, it may not cover it at all for weight loss. Plus, adds Dr. DePasquale, someone who attempts to microdose Ozemic with the hopes of controlling their blood sugar may find that it\u2019s not effective enough to do so. They may get frustrated and stop taking it altogether, which could also be risky.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inconsistent use:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ozempic is designed for long-term use, and people need to commit to using it appropriately to realize the benefits. If someone starts taking it, then stops taking it, and then starts taking it at a different dose, it can be harmful to their metabolic health, much like yo-yo dieting is. \u201cI\u2019m a little worried about the patient who is starting microdosing without clear guidance about this being a long-term medication,\u201d Dr. Sowa says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inaccurate dosing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Ozempic comes in a prefilled injector, some may purchase compounded semaglutide to obtain a microdose. Compounded semaglutide comes in a glass vial, and it needs to be administered with a syringe. This can lead to inaccurate dosing due to potential errors in measuring the medication with a syringe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Compromised quality products: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-compounded-semaglutide-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide has risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including impurities or inaccurate ingredients. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to validate what\u2019s in those medicines,\u201d says Dr. Sowa. In fact, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA issued a July 2024 statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to warn about receiving a growing number of reports about adverse effects associated with using compounded injectable semaglutide products. The adverse events included gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, migraine, fainting, dehydration, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gallstones-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gallstones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and acute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microdosing Ozempic may seem appealing, especially if you only want to shed a few pounds or cannot afford the medication. However, there is no solid data to suggest that it works\u2014or that it works well enough to take the risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking any weight-loss medications, talk to your healthcare provider about what\u2019s most appropriate for you, given your current weight and health status.
