They also refer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10597691\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that revealed GLP1-agonists were associated with reduced fetal weight and\/or growth, delayed bone formation, lower maternal weight gain, and decreased food consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A patient\u2019s healthcare team of doctors may discuss alternatives to Ozempic to take while pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tambini says there\u2019s insufficient research supporting the use of Ozempic while breastfeeding. \u201cIt\u2019s unclear if the medication passes into breast milk or if it could affect a nursing baby,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are safer alternatives to Ozempic while breastfeeding or lactating. \u201cTraditional medications like insulin and metformin have been studied extensively and deemed safe for use while breastfeeding,\u201d Dr. Naqvi says. \u201cWhile the drugs Saxenda (liraglutide) and Trulicity (dulaglutide) have been posed as possible alternatives to Ozempic, the medical community hasn\u2019t officially deemed any GLP-1 agonist medication definitively safe for use while breastfeeding.\u201d Decisions on which medications to use while breastfeeding must be made on an individual basis in consultation with one\u2019s medical providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to discussing medications, Dr. Tambini recommends adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and staying hydrated to continue controlling diabetes and supporting a healthy weight while breastfeeding or lactating. She also recommends speaking with your healthcare provider to create a plan that works for you and your growing baby.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-during-menopause\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic during menopause<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10952331\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals that a large portion of women going through menopause report weight gain between 2 to 4 pounds per year despite no changes in their eating habits or level of physical activity. Because of this symptom, it could be assumed that Ozempic or other GLP-1 drugs could be prescribed for weight loss management from menopause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Tambini says this drug is not approved for managing symptoms of menopause. \u201cWhile it might help with weight management, which is a common concern during menopause, it doesn\u2019t address other symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, or reduced bone density,\u201d she says. \u201cTreatments like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are still the gold standard for menopause-related issues. If weight gain or insulin resistance is part of your menopause journey, Ozempic might indirectly help in those areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"should-women-be-concerned-about-long-term-side-effects-of-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should women be concerned about long-term side effects of Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tambini says that the long-term side effects of Ozempic are still being studied but lists the following as potential complications of taking this injectable medicine for an extended period:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallbladder issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s also an ongoing investigation into whether prolonged use might increase the risk of thyroid tumors,\u201d Dr. Tambini explains. \u201cHowever, this has primarily been observed in animal studies and hasn\u2019t been confirmed in humans. Women with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or gallbladder disease should be especially cautious.\u201d The FDA warning regarding a history of thyroid cancer applies specifically to the rare medullary or C-cell form, which can be part of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She adds that these potential risks shouldn\u2019t deter you from using Ozempic if your healthcare provider deems it medically necessary and safe. Still, it\u2019s crucial to get regular check-ups and share any concerns you have with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-can-women-manage-or-prevent-side-effects-of-ozempic-effectively\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can women manage or prevent side effects of Ozempic effectively?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-chart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended starting dose for Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 0.25 milligrams (mg) once a week for the first four weeks. This can then be increased to the standard dose of 0.5 mg once weekly for month two. The maximum Ozempic dose is 2 mg once per week at month four and beyond. It\u2019s best to gradually increase your dosage to help your body adjust to the medication and lower your risk of side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways you can reduce your chances of experiencing adverse effects of Ozempic include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gradually increasing dose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cStart low and go slow\u2014that\u2019s the golden rule with Ozempic,\u201d Dr. Tambini advises. \u201cBeginning with a lower dose and gradually increasing it can help your body adjust more comfortably.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Staying hydrated:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cStaying hydrated is crucial\u2014especially when dealing with diarrhea or vomiting,\u201d Dr. Tambini says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eating foods that support digestive health: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFatty, greasy foods can worsen nausea and diarrhea, while fiber-rich foods can help with bowel regularity,\u201d Dr. Naqvi says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-max-dose\/\">What is the maximum dose of Ozempic?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Naqvi, certain drug-drug interactions could increase the risk of semaglutide side effects. \u201cDiabetes medications like insulin and metformin, as well as some oral medications, beta-blockers, statins, anticoagulants, anticonvulsant medications, and certain antibiotics and antimalarial drugs, can all interact negatively with Ozempic, including causing dangerously low blood sugar, decreasing the effectiveness of other drugs, and making Ozempic side effects more likely to occur,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tambini also adds that if you\u2019re on hormonal birth control, you should check with your healthcare provider to ensure your contraception is still working normally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4418331\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Ozempic does not impact some oral contraceptive levels, the active ingredient in this drug, semaglutide, could possibly affect the absorption of oral contraceptives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are known to interact with Ozempic include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"
