But other side effects, like cold-like symptoms or back pain, might develop only after taking several doses of Repatha.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-repatha-side-effects-last\">How long do Repatha side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p>The good news is that most common side effects from Repatha don\u2019t last long and tend to lessen over time. \u201cInjection site reactions usually go away in a couple of days, while other symptoms, like muscle pain or flu-like feelings, might last a bit longer but are typically manageable,\u201d says Raj Dasgupta, MD, a quadruple board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine, pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine, and chief medical adviser for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garagegymreviews.com\/author\/drraj\">Garage Gym<\/a>. Dr. Dasgupta recommends checking in with your doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-any-long-term-side-effects-of-repatha\">Are there any long-term side effects of Repatha?<\/h2>\n<p>Long-term side effects from taking Repatha are rare. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36031810\/\">one study<\/a> examined the long-term effects of Repatha in cardiovascular patients. \u201cThere were no long-term side effects that were found to be different than a patient who was not taking the medication,\u201d said Dylan Huber, Pharm.D., interim director of pharmacy\/pharmacy clinical coordinator at Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago (<a href=\"https:\/\/sahchicago.org\/component\/content\/article\/sah-pharmacy?catid=9&amp;highlight=WyJwaGFybWFjeSJd&amp;Itemid=280\">SAH Pharmacy<\/a>). Still, some long-term effects were reported among study participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think it is still important to know about some of the long-term side effects that have been reported,\u201d Huber said, in reference to the 2022 study. These long-term side effects included new-onset diabetes and joint\/muscle pain. \u201cThe joint\/muscle pain would resolve with medication discontinuation,\u201d Huber says. \u201cNew onset diabetes is very uncommon, and the risk is no different than if you were not taking the medication, but it is still important to be aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"repatha-interactions\">Repatha interactions<\/h2>\n<p>On a positive note, there are no foods you can\u2019t consume while taking Repatha. \u201cRepatha does not have any known major food or beverage interactions, including alcohol, coffee, or grapefruit,\u201d says Dr. Mandal.<\/p>\n<p>That said, since people taking Repatha typically have heart conditions, it\u2019s important to stick to a heart-healthy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-healthy-diet\/\"> diet<\/a> while taking Repatha. This includes eating foods low in saturated fat, eating plenty of whole grains, prioritizing foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, and limiting salt and alcohol intake.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason Repatha is less likely to interact with foods you eat is because of how the medication is administered. This is also why it\u2019s less likely to interact with medications. \u201cRepatha is given via an injection, which limits the potential for gastrointestinal absorption of food or drug interactions,\u201d shares Claudia Cometa, Pharm.D., founder and CEO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consultavanti.com\/team\">Avanti Health Consultants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although Repatha is unlikely to interact with other medications you are taking, Dr. Dasgupta says that you should stay in touch with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking both Repatha and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/which-cholesterol-drug-is-safest\">statin<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a good idea to tell your doctor about any other medications you\u2019re taking, especially cholesterol drugs like statins, since combining them could make muscle pain more likely,\u201d he advises.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-repatha\">Safety measures while using Repatha<\/h2>\n<p>Although Repatha is safe for most individuals, some people should avoid it or speak to a healthcare professional before taking it. Here\u2019s what to know, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=709338ae-ab8f-44a9-b7d5-abaabec3493a\">DailyMed at the National Institutes of Health<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pregnant women: Clinical trials are not available for pregnant people taking Repatha, which means it\u2019s not known whether the drug will harm your baby.<\/li>\n<li>Breastfeeding: At this time, there is no data on whether Repatha enters breast milk, how it affects breastfed babies, or whether it affects milk supply.<\/li>\n<li>Children: Repatha is used safely and effectively in children aged 10 and up who have heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), but safety hasn\u2019t been established in younger children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As of this writing, the FDA has never recalled Repatha, and there are no black-box warnings for it. However, in June of 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repatha.com\/pushtronexsystemupdate\">manufacturer of Repatha (Amgen) discontinued one Repatha product<\/a>: the Repatha Pushtronex\u00ae System. Other products, like Repatha\u00ae SureClick\u00ae Autoinjector, are still in use.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-repatha-side-effects\">How to avoid Repatha side effects<\/h2>\n<p>There are several steps you can take to avoid some common Repatha side effects. Here\u2019s what the experts we spoke to recommended.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"injection-site-reactions\">Injection site reactions<\/h3>\n<p>If you have experienced injection site reactions in the past, Huber recommends taking an antihistamine like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/dosage\">Benadryl<\/a> (diphenhydramine) prior to your injection. \u201cThis should only be done if there is a known history of injection reactions and should be discussed with your doctor,\u201d he emphasizes. Benadryl can cause significant drowsiness, so keep this in mind when deciding when to give your dose.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"colds-flu-or-other-upper-respiratory-infections\">Colds, flu, or other upper respiratory infections<\/h3>\n<p>If you are prone to getting colds or flu while on Repatha, you can boost your immune system by \u201cmaintaining a healthy and immune-supporting lifestyle, through whole foods and treating vitamin deficiencies,\u201d Cometa recommends.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allergies\">Allergies<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a latex allergy, you should avoid any latex-containing syringes or other injection components, Cometa advises. Your doctor can recommend the correct Repatha product for you. If you have a severe allergic reaction to Repatha, your doctor will likely recommend alternative cholesterol-lowering medicines.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-side-effects-of-repatha\">How to treat side effects of Repatha<\/h2>\n<p>Again, most individuals will not experience side effects while taking Repatha. Or, if they do, the side effects will go away fairly quickly, Huber emphasizes. \u201cHowever, it is always important to know what to look out for,\u201d he says. \u201cFor side effects that are difficult to tolerate or last longer than a few days, I would recommend discussing this with your prescribing doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips for managing side effects that may occur while taking Repatha.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"injection-site-irritation\">Injection site irritation<\/h3>\n<p>Rotating where you give yourself the injection can help you avoid repeated soreness or irritation, Dr. Dasgupta advises. \u201cA cold pack or a mild pain reliever can also ease discomfort,\u201d he recommends.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"muscle-pain\">Muscle pain<\/h3>\n<p>Muscle pain, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/lower-back-pain-treatment-and-medications\">back pain<\/a>, can be treated similarly to other types of pain. \u201cStaying well-hydrated, engaging in regular physical activity, and discussing any persistent pain with your provider can help manage these symptoms,\u201d Dr. Mandal offers.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cold-or-flu-like-symptoms\">Cold or flu-like symptoms<\/h3>\n<p>If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, resting and staying well hydrated will help, says Dr. Dasgupta. However, if you are experiencing any symptoms that are difficult to manage or don\u2019t respond to at-home treatments, don&#8217;t hesitate to reach out to your doctor.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allergic-reactions\">Allergic reactions<\/h3>\n<p>While rare, if you experience symptoms such as a rash, itching, or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical attention immediately, Dr. Mandal says. \u201cYour provider may recommend discontinuing the medication and provide appropriate treatment for the reaction, such as antihistamines or corticosteroids,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"frequently-asked-questions-about-repatha-side-effects\">Frequently asked questions about Repatha side effects<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"how-common-are-repatha-side-effects\">How common are Repatha side effects?<\/h3>\n<p>Most people tolerate Repatha well.
