At first glance, these two drugs don\u2019t seem to have much in common. Gabapentin is a generic anticonvulsant available under the brand names <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gralise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gralise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/neurontin?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurontin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s prescribed to treat seizures, nerve pain, and restless legs syndrome. Melatonin is an over-the-counter (OTC) supplement that mimics the hormone responsible for keeping your circadian rhythm in check and helping you fall asleep at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though these drugs seem mostly unrelated, people with a combination of acute and chronic conditions may find themselves taking both gabapentin and melatonin at the same time\u2014and left wondering if it\u2019s safe to use these medications together. Here\u2019s what to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-melatonin-and-gabapentin-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take melatonin and gabapentin together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. They can be used together to treat various nerve pain disorders, with both drugs potentially having a positive impact on the way the body perceives pain. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5745655\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9788115\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also be used as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatments for anxiety, thanks to their ability to provide a calming, sedating effect on many people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin may also be helpful for sleep. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmacistsguide.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., founder of The Pharmacist\u2019s Guide, it has been shown to increase the total time and quality of sleep, and she says neurologists may recommend taking both drugs together as a treatment for insomnia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMelatonin is helpful for falling asleep faster, and gabapentin is helpful for staying asleep longer and getting deeper sleep, so it could be beneficial for certain people to [combine them to] get the sleep that they need,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies have looked at the paired use of gabapentin and melatonin and found that the combination can be beneficial in other, more specific populations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0104001418301143\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nerve-pain-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerve pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking melatonin before going to bed reduced the daytime drowsiness caused as a side effect of gabapentin. Researchers think taking melatonin may help people with nerve pain reduce the amount of daytime sleepiness brought on by gabapentin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6119980\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers found that when gabapentin and melatonin were taken before lumbar back surgery, patients experienced less anxiety and less pain after surgery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A combination of gabapentin and melatonin has also been shown to be helpful in reducing anxiety and pain in patients undergoing a specific procedure (retrobulbar eye block) before cataract surgery, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3847247\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Lewis, there isn\u2019t much research about safe combined doses of melatonin and gabapentin, so the best approach may be to start with low doses of both medications and slowly titrate up (or increase) if you need and can tolerate higher doses. But talk to your healthcare provider before you start taking melatonin. They can recommend a dose that may be most helpful and advise you about whether it is safe to take with any other medications you may be taking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical starting dose of gabapentin is usually 250 to 300 milligrams, says Dr. Lewis, but there isn\u2019t an established <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-dosage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended dose for melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cMost people start at 1 milligram and titrate up, though there is evidence to show that lower doses are actually more beneficial and higher doses of melatonin don\u2019t have any added benefit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lewis also notes that melatonin is typically only recommended for short-term use unless you\u2019re under the supervision of a healthcare provider counseling you about taking it long-term.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"taking-melatonin-and-gabapentin-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking melatonin and gabapentin together<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., cofounder of Toolbox Genomics, gabapentin and melatonin can be taken together safely. Gabapentin is usually taken up to three times per day, she says, most commonly at night since it may cause sleepiness, lack of focus, and dizziness. As a sleep aid, melatonin is also typically taken at night, but a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar side effect profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means you\u2019ll need to be careful when combining these medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou might experience increased sleepiness, sedation, or difficulty concentrating when both melatonin and gabapentin are being taken together,\u201d Dr. Gray says, \u201cand increased feelings of sleepiness can also increase your risk of falls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though there are benefits for some people to take gabapentin and melatonin together, it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider before you do. Because melatonin is available over the counter and doesn\u2019t require a prescription, a healthcare provider prescribing gabapentin to you won\u2019t know that you\u2019re taking both drugs unless you inform them. While the combination is generally safe, your healthcare provider may not want you to take both medications because of the increased sedation and risk of falls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a pharmacist, I don\u2019t think I would routinely recommend that people take these drugs together for long-term use unless it\u2019s under the direct advice of a provider,\u201d Dr. Lewis says. \u201cHowever, many people do take them together, usually at lower doses, with no issues or side effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-you-take-melatonin-with-gabapentin-at-night\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take melatonin with gabapentin at night?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes\u2014in fact, this is when most people would choose to take both medications. Gabapentin can be sedating on its own, so taking it at the same time as melatonin isn\u2019t something most people should do during the day (unless the combination is being given in preparation for a surgical procedure, as in the two studies we mentioned earlier).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gray says it\u2019s important to take gabapentin and melatonin together only when you\u2019re home for the evening and ready to go to bed. She also warns that alcohol and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK424847\/table\/appd.t15\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other sedative medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used in combination with melatonin, gabapentin, or a combination of both can increase sedation and grogginess. Exercise additional caution if you\u2019ve had any alcoholic beverages, and talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications with drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (alprazolam), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (diazepam), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ambien-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (zolpidem).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-and-melatonin-comparison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and melatonin comparison<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve noted, gabapentin and melatonin are two relatively different drugs with different indications and purposes. Gabapentin is a prescription anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication, while melatonin is an OTC supplement designed to help people fall asleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there is some overlap in the conditions these two medications can treat and in some of their side effects and interactions.
