Thousands of people are filling prescriptions for it every week, including a long list of celebrities. And that\u2019s because, combined with diet and exercise, it can work wonders. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it mimics the appetite-regulating hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, reducing hunger, slowing digestion, and ultimately shedding pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it can affect the body in more than one way, which means it might also come with possible side effects. For anyone considering Wegovy, it\u2019s important to know all the potential adverse reactions before starting treatment, plus how to avoid and manage them. Fortunately, we\u2019ve got all that info right here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects-of-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Wegovy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy\u2019s clinical trials showed that the drug\u2019s most common side effects are gastrointestinal. Nausea was the most common\u201444% of adults reported it, compared to 16% on a placebo\u2014followed by diarrhea (30%), vomiting (24%), and constipation (24%). Other common side effects include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal distension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eructation (burping)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatulence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach flu<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone will experience the same side effects, and some people might not get any whatsoever. \u201cMost of my patients have little to no side effects on these meds, and typically, the side effects are manageable,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutsygirlmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Supriya Rao, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gastroenterologist, managing partner at Integrated Gastroenterology Consultants. \u201cFor example, constipation, I can get them on something to help with the constipation, and it&#8217;s not a big deal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Wegovy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side effects listed above might be bothersome. They might even disrupt daily life. But they\u2019re rarely dangerous. However, Wegovy does have some potential serious side effects that would require medical help. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/215256s007lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the drug\u2019s prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute gallbladder disease and gallstones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially in people with Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney failure, acute kidney injury, and other kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe abdominal pain or stomach problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retinal disorders and changes in vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of thyroid cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy, like the other GLP-1 agonists, all carry an FDA black box warning regarding an increased risk of medullary thyroid cancer. These medications should be avoided in people with a personal or close family history of thyroid cancer. Serious side effects are possible, but uncommon. A study in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/obr.13792\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity Reviews<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that semaglutide\u2019s adverse effects were typically mild or moderate, not serious. A separate study in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajconline.org\/article\/S0002-9149(24)00319-9\/fulltext\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Journal of Cardiology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had similar results, showing that mild gastrointestinal side effects are common, but serious ones that require discontinuation are rarer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, doctors still don\u2019t take them lightly, especially reactions like pancreatitis. \u201cIf anybody has a history of pancreatitis, it&#8217;s pretty much a contraindication because the threshold for them getting pancreatitis again on this medication is pretty low,\u201d Dr. Rao says. \u201cPancreatitis can range from being mild to needing hospitalization and being hospitalized for months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rao also says she always gets baseline labs and consults patients on their family medical history of thyroid cancer before prescribing Wegovy. That\u2019s because, in rare cases, it might cause an elevation of liver enzymes, and animal studies suggest that it might increase the risk of possible thyroid tumors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-wegovy-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do Wegovy side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy starts working in the body <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-quickly-does-wegovy-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within 1\u20133 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so side effects can start right away. \u201cOftentimes, I see it when we&#8217;re either starting the medication or increasing the dose. Usually, within the first couple of weeks, people are able to manage it, and it&#8217;s not a problem,\u201d Dr. Rao says. \u201cWhen you start increasing the dose, then it can manifest a little bit more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-wegovy-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Wegovy side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Wegovy\u2019s side effects may subside after you hit the maintenance dose of 1.7 or 2.4 mg, getting to that point might take some time. That\u2019s because doctors often start patients at a low dose, then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-doses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slowly titrate up to a maintenance dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over a few months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\/directory\/diana-roman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Diana Roman, PharmD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical pharmacist, and assistant professor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshall B. Ketchum University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWegovy is started at a low dose of 0.25 mg subcutaneously weekly and is gradually increased every 4 weeks, as tolerated, to a maximum dose of 2.4 mg weekly.\u201d This dosage ramp-up (called titration) is designed to lower the chances of side effects\u2014particularly common gastrointestinal ones like nausea\u2014by letting the patient\u2019s body get accustomed to the medication. However, each dosage increase might cause either recurring or temporary side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, Dr. Roman says doctors may choose to slow down the titration schedule if a patient is experiencing side effects. In cases when a patient cannot tolerate the gastrointestinal side effects of an increased dose of Wegovy, she says they may also revert back to the previous dose before trying the increase again later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of Wegovy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After successfully losing body weight, many people want to keep it off. The issue? Depending on the person, going off of Wegovy might bring back some of those unwanted pounds. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9542252\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study from 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, on average, patients regained two-thirds of that weight after stopping Wegovy. Fortunately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-02996-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other research has found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that semaglutide is effective in maintaining weight loss over four years\u2014the longest period of time that\u2019s been studied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while Wegovy\u2019s benefits can persist, so can some long-term side effects. In that four-year study, 16.6% of patients discontinued treatment because of persistent adverse effects, compared to 8.2% in the placebo group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t a ton of research on the long-term side effects of semaglutide, but it has been linked to an increased risk of thyroid tumors. The FDA has even issued a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Ozempic, Wegovy, and all the GLP-1 agonists concerning this risk, although it\u2019s still a fairly rare occurrence. Other potential long-term effects include an increased risk of pancreatitis (0.2 cases per 100 patient-years), gallbladder problems (1.6% compared to 0.7% on a placebo), acute kidney injury (0.4 cases per 100 patient-years), and hypotension (1.3% compared to 0.4% on a placebo).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wegovy-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects aren\u2019t the only risks that Wegovy presents\u2014like most other drugs, it can interact with other prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Wegovy\u2019s known interactions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Insulin products:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Like Wegovy, drugs like Lantus and Humalog lower blood sugar, which can lead to hypoglycemia when combined.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sulfonylureas or meglitinides: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This group of drugs also helps control blood sugar levels, so like insulin, they can compound Wegovy\u2019s hypoglycemic effects, presenting a risk of low blood sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>ACE inhibitors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cardiovascular drugs might also lower blood sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other GLP-1 agonists: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs like Ozempic, Rybelsus, Victoza, and Trulicity have the same effects as Wegovy, so taking them at the same time is discouraged.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain oral medications: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy decreases gastric emptying, which can delay the absorption of other drugs. For drugs that have a thin line between safe and toxic doses\u2014like warfarin, phenytoin, and levothyroxine\u2014this can be a problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t directly interact with semaglutide, but alcohol can cause some of the same side effects, like nausea, dehydration, low blood sugar, blood pressure changes, and even an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3299482\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of acute pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Garlic supplements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garlic is totally fine as a seasoning in your favorite dishes. But in higher doses (like a supplement), it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5642189\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may lower blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Green tea: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green tea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23803878\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also lowers blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so drinking a lot of it also interact with Wegovy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t a comprehensive list of Wegovy\u2019s possible interactions, and researchers are still studying certain ones, so it\u2019s important to tell your healthcare provider about any prescription medication or supplements you\u2019re taking before starting treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety measures while using Wegovy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild, common side effects might not stop a health care provider from prescribing Wegovy, or a patient from taking it. But there are some specific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasons that someone shouldn\u2019t take it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People who should avoid it include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Patients with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36356111\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s some evidence <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that GLP-1s can increase the risk of a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). A family history of MTC can make you more susceptible to getting it yourself, so it\u2019s something you should discuss with your doctor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a rare genetic disorder that can cause cancer in the thyroid or other glands. Considering Wegovy\u2019s potential effect on the thyroid gland, people who have MEN 2 typically shouldn\u2019t take it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to semaglutide: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has ever had a serious allergic reaction to Ozempic, Wegovy, or other semaglutide medications shouldn\u2019t take it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Children under 12 years old: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is only approved for people over the age of 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patients who are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s unclear whether semaglutide can harm human fetuses, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10328448\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have suggested that it might.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of the contraindications listed on the label, there are other people who should use Wegovy with caution, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anyone with pre-existing gastrointestinal health issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because Wegovy can cause several gastrointestinal side effects, it might not be the best option for people with digestive problems, especially those with gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with a history of pancreatitis:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is another potential side effect of Wegovy, and people who have already had bouts of pancreatitis are more likely to get it again.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with a history of gallstones:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wegovy increases the risk of gallstones, so people who are predisposed to getting them might think twice before taking it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diabetic patients who are taking other antidiabetic drugs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These drugs can lower your blood glucose, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anyone with a history of depression or suicidal thoughts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wegovy can affect moods, so these patients should be cautious as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People who have diabetic retinopathy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is an eye disease that can stem from diabetes, and Wegovy might make it worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-wegovy-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Wegovy side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, adverse effects are simply out of your control. Either they happen, or they don\u2019t. But people taking Wegovy can also take certain measures to help reduce the potential risk. They include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stick to the schedule:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Doctors increase Wegovy dosage gradually for a reason\u2014the body needs time to adjust. So don\u2019t take more than the prescribed dose, and always follow the doctor\u2019s exact directions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not only might Wegovy cause dehydration (through vomiting or diarrhea), but dehydration can worsen other side effects, like headaches and constipation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat a healthy, balanced diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf you&#8217;re having really huge, fatty meals, you&#8217;re not going to feel good on these meds because they&#8217;re working to make you stop eating that kind of food,\u201d Dr. Rao says. She recommends a high-fiber, plant-forward diet instead. Lean proteins and avoidance of processed, sugary foods are best.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise regularly: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise isn\u2019t just good for weight loss, but for digestion too. \u201c I always tell patients after you eat a meal to go for a walk afterwards because that really helps jump start digestion,\u201d Dr. Rao says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat small meals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Roman encourages Wegovy patients to eat slowly and consume smaller portion sizes. Since Wegovy slows down digestion, small meals are easier to process, and larger meals might cause increased gastrointestinal discomfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take Wegovy on the same day every week: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help ensure that the drug\u2019s levels stay consistent, reducing the risk of side effects.
