Less commonly, veterinarians use pregabalin to treat chronic pain or seizure disorders in cats. Pregabalin is a drug very similar to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another antiseizure drug often used for chronic pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: Save up to 80% on <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pregabalin\"><b>pregabalin<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-pregabalin-used-for-in-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is pregabalin used for in cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticonvulsant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that veterinarians primarily use as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anxiolytics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiolytic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (anxiety medication) in cats and sometimes as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/analgesics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analgesic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pain reliever). As an anxiety medication, pregabalin is FDA approved in cats for the alleviation of situational anxiety, particularly travel anxiety or veterinary visits. Veterinarians may also use pregabalin off-label to relieve chronic pain or prevent seizures, but they prefer to use other medications for these problems. For these problems, pregabalin is a viable choice as a standalone or add-on treatment when other medications don\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has approved Bonqat, a liquid version of pregabalin, to treat cat anxiety provoked by travel or veterinary visits. Veterinarians may prescribe regular pregabalin capsules off-label for the same purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin relieves feline anxiety by slowing down and weakening nerve signals. It accomplishes this by reducing neurotransmitter concentrations at the junctures between nerves. This mechanism of action also relieves nerve pain (neuropathies) or prevents seizures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caregivers will administer one oral dose about one and a half hours before travel or a visit to a veterinary clinic. Most cats will require just one dose, but a second dose can be given the next day if the cat is still traveling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"chronic-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is not a veterinarian\u2019s first choice as a chronic pain reliever. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically the first pain relievers veterinarians use in cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both gabapentin and pregabalin are used in people to treat chronic neuropathic pain like back pain. In veterinary medicine, pregabalin is primarily used to treat chronic osteoarthritis pain in dogs. Unfortunately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaha.org\/resources\/2022-aaha-pain-management-guidelines-for-dogs-and-cats\/pharmacological-agents-in-the-treatment-of-chronic-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is no evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that either gabapentin or pregabalin is effective at treating chronic pain in cats, so veterinarians are less likely to rely on the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seizure-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizure disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A seizure is a short-lived neurologic problem in which multiple nerve pathways fire at the same time. Some seizures are mild, like temporarily \u201cblanking out,\u201d and some may be severe, involving loss of consciousness and convulsions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When seizures happen frequently, veterinarians diagnose the cat with a seizure disorder. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jvim.15881\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 in 10,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cats are diagnosed with a seizure disorder, but many cats go undiagnosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many types of seizure disorders based on where in the brain the seizure occurs and what happens during a seizure. Veterinarians use medications called anticonvulsants to reduce the frequency of recurrent seizures. Some drugs can treat most seizure disorders, while others work best at preventing some types.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes time to start a drug, veterinarians use just one drug (monotherapy) in order to minimize side effects. If that one drug doesn\u2019t work at controlling seizures, veterinarians add another anticonvulsant to the mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is one such add-on or \u201cadjuvant\u201d treatment for refractory seizures in cats. However, it\u2019s not at the top of the list because it hasn\u2019t been proven effective in cats. Cats will typically use other drugs\u2014including gabapentin\u2014as add-on treatments first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-pregabalin-safe-for-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is pregabalin safe for cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians consider pregabalin safe for healthy cats. Side effects are minimal. The most common problems cats experience are tiredness and coordination problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is not safe for any cat that has had an allergic reaction to pregabalin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians are cautious about using pregabalin in cats with kidney problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects-of-pregabalin-in-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of pregabalin in cats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=4f7f35b4-59ec-4a3c-8c71-d28cf0c4f0eb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most commonly reported side effects of pregabalin in cats were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incoordination (ataxia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible severe side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low body temperature<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe incoordination<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the cat has any of these symptoms, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=4f7f35b4-59ec-4a3c-8c71-d28cf0c4f0eb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep the cat warm and allow the drug to wear off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These symptoms should resolve in four to six hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although not listed as possible side effects in cats, the most serious adverse reactions of pregabalin in people are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney dysfunction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowed breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slight changes to heart rhythms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"interactions-of-pregabalin-with-other-pet-meds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions of pregabalin with other pet meds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid possible drug interactions, tell the veterinarian about all the drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies the cat is being given, particularly:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other CNS depressants such as opioids, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sedating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or CBD (cannabidiol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ace-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benazepril-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benazepril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/enalapril-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enalapril<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"pregabalin-dosage-for-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin dosage for cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians use pregabalin for anxiety, chronic pain, or seizures. The published dosages are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For situational anxiety (travel or vet visits):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 5 mg\/kg given once 1.5 hours before travel\u2014a second dose can be administered the next day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For chronic pain: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u20132 mg\/kg given twice daily\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For seizure disorders: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u20132 mg\/kg given twice daily\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has approved a pregabalin oral solution (Bonqat) for use in cats for acute anxiety brought on by travel or veterinary visits. Human formulations of pregabalin oral solution are also available.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet owners can also purchase pregabalin capsules made for people, including a brand-name version called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lyrica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The dosage strengths may be too high to accurately dose a cat. The lowest dosage strength is 25 mg per capsule. A 10-pound cat would require a 25 mg dose for situational anxiety, but a 5 or 10 mg dose for pain or seizure disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A compounding pharmacy can provide lower-dose capsules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-cats-overdose-on-pregabalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can cats overdose on pregabalin?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum pregabalin dosage for cats is 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight (about 2.5 mg per pound) given as a single dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact an animal poison control center or talk to a veterinarian if a cat is given too much pregabalin. Although overdoses have not been studied in cats, a pregabalin overdose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=d92c94e5-e542-4177-afa8-fa00ba17634c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cause seizures, heart block, or death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible signs of an overdose are severe tiredness, lack of coordination, and hypothermia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-i-give-my-cat-pregabalin-every-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I give my cat pregabalin every day?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is only FDA-approved as a single-dose treatment for situational anxiety in cats. Doses are high and may sedate the cat, so they are not appropriate for daily use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is not commonly used for seizures or chronic pain. If it is, veterinarians will use it as a long-term treatment. Cats with seizure disorders usually take anticonvulsants like pregabalin for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-give-your-cat-pregabalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to give your cat pregabalin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians usually prescribe pregabalin to cats on an as-needed basis to alleviate acute anxiety or fear due to a stressful event. Most pet owners will do no more than give a single dose of pregabalin every once in a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give this medication as prescribed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not increase the dose or give doses more frequently than prescribed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give doses with or without food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>How to administer Bonqat CV oral solution:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please read the Client Information sheet that comes with this medicine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always use the dosing syringe provided with the medicine to measure doses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats weighing more than 22 pounds may require that two doses be measured and administered. The dosing syringe can only hold 1 milliliter of the oral solution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t know how to administer liquid medicine to a cat, ask a veterinary assistant to demonstrate the proper procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store Bonqat oral solution in the refrigerator.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonquat oral solution can also be stored at room temperature below 77\u02dafor up to 30 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throw away any unused medicine six months after opening the bottle.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>How to administer pregabalin capsules:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t know how to give a cat capsules, ask a veterinary assistant for a demonstration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store pregabalin capsules at room temperature.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregabalin is a controlled substance in some states because of the risk of abuse, dependence, or harm to other people.
