If your healthcare provider prescribes Eliquis, you may wonder which medical insurance tier it is on and how much you\u2019ll be expected to pay. But there\u2019s more to it than just the tier. We\u2019ll break down drug tiers and how insurance formularies treat Eliquis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"understanding-your-drug-formulary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding your drug formulary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/glossary\/formulary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formulary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a list of drugs that are covered by your insurance company, whether it\u2019s commercial health insurance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-assistance-for-medicare-patients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Medicaid. Drugs are placed in tiers, and the higher the tier, the more expensive the drug is for the patient. Some drug formularies may have only three tiers, while others may have up to five. Tier 1 drugs are typically generic and have the lowest copay that the patient is expected to pay. The middle tiers may include a mix of generics, preferred brands, and nonpreferred brands. The highest tier typically includes nonpreferred, brand, and specialty drugs. The highest tier will have the highest out-of-pocket cost for the patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-drug-tier-is-eliquis-on\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What drug tier is Eliquis on?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis is on Tier 2 of many prescription drug plans, but some insurances place it on Tier 1 or Tier 3. For any drug, the tier it is placed on may vary from one insurance company to the next, and even between plans from the same company. Insurances change which tier medication is on at different times, so the cost from the pharmacy can change throughout the calendar year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhc.com\/medicare\/alphadog\/PDEX24PD0152930_000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This United HealthCare Medicare plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> places Eliquis in Tier 3. In contrast, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fm.formularynavigator.com\/MemberPages\/pdf\/Preferred4TierformularyFDB_7449_Full_2083.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield preferred drug list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has Eliquis listed as a Tier 2 drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since insurance coverage varies widely, it may help instead to get an idea of what you can expect to pay for Eliquis. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliquis.bmscustomerconnect.com\/price\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bristol-Myers Squibb Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the drug\u2019s manufacturer, most people pay the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patients with commercial health insurance (private or employer-sponsored):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $38 per month, although half pay $20 or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medicaid:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $2 per month, although half pay $0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medicare beneficiaries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $55 per month, although half pay $40 or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medicare Low-Income Subsidy (Medicare Extra Help) beneficiaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$0 to $11.20 per month\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Eliquis is not a covered medication on your formulary, you may contact your insurance company to ask for a list of similar drugs that are covered by your plan and thereby have a less expensive out-of-pocket cost for you. Your healthcare provider may also request an exception or fill out a prior authorization form, which may convince your insurance company to provide coverage for a drug normally not provided by your plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-eliquis-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Eliquis cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance, the average retail price of 60, 5 mg tablets of Eliquis, which is typically a month\u2019s supply, is $787. There are ways to save, however. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare coupon for Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lower the price to $479, depending on your location and pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"eliquis-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis alternatives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Eliquis is too expensive, talk to your healthcare provider. They may be able to recommend alternatives that are more affordable and still considered effective. \u201cThe choice of medicine depends on individual health factors, so it\u2019s important to consult your doctor,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alyssa-wozniak-b79186164\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Wozniak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., BCPS, assistant dean for clinical affairs, outreach, and special projects in the School of Pharmacy at D\u2019Youville University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/eliquis-generic-apixaban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved a generic version of Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019, it is not expected to be available until 2028. \u201cThe generic version is not available due to ongoing patent protections,\u201d Wozniak says. Once available, the generic version will likely cost less, and Eliquis will become a less expensive treatment option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Eliquis doesn\u2019t have a generic version, there are other blood thinner medications that may be effective and considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Examples include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pradaxa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pradaxa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dabigatran), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xarelto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (rivaroxaban), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jantoven#coupons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jantoven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
