Meloxicam is a stronger painkiller than other NSAIDs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/meloxicam-vs-naproxen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here\u2019s what you need to know. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-meloxicam-effective-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is meloxicam effective for tooth pain?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-meloxicam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be taken to decrease tooth pain in certain situations, but it isn\u2019t typically the first choice dentists consider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDs like ibuprofen are more commonly recommended for tooth pain because they are equally effective, easier to access, and better studied for dental conditions,\u201d says Randy Kunik, DDS at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunikorthodontics.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kunik Orthodontics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelliudds.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noel Liu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DDS, CEO of Secure Dental and co-founder of DentVia, says that he usually recommends meloxicam when someone experiences severe<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-inflammation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of their dental pain. \u201cI have found meloxicam useful in managing moderate to severe dental pain resulting from abscesses, post-extraction discomfort, or periodontal problems,\u201d he says. He explains that meloxicam\u2019s long half-life is effective at reducing inflammation and offers relief for a longer time period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might be wondering if meloxicam can help with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-painkiller-for-tooth-nerve-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tooth nerve pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMeloxicam is less effective for nerve-related pain, such as that caused by a damaged tooth pulp or trigeminal nerve issues,\u201d Dr. Kunik says. \u201cNerve pain typically requires different treatments, like acetaminophen or even medications targeting nerve pathways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-meloxicam-work-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does meloxicam work for tooth pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam is an NSAID, and it\u2019s also considered<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32164967\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COX-2 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/cox-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an enzyme that produces prostaglandins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which produce some of the symptoms of pain and inflammation symptoms you experience during toothaches and other pain conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMeloxicam works by blocking the production of prostaglandins\u2014chemicals in the body that trigger inflammation and pain,\u201d Dr. Kunik explains. Meloxicam accomplishes this by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX). \u201cThis reduces swelling and alleviates pain in dental conditions related to inflammation,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-meloxicam-to-work-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take meloxicam to work for tooth pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing serious dental pain, you want relief fast. The good news is that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-for-meloxicam-to-start-working\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meloxicam typically works fairly quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMeloxicam has an onset of relief in patients after 30 minutes to an hour, with a peak effect at four to six hours,\u201d Dr. Liu says. Additionally, meloxicam<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38608134\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">works for a longer time period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than other NSAIDs. \u201cBecause of its long duration of action (up to 24 hours), it makes an excellent agent for patients who wish to avoid frequent dosing,\u201d Dr. Liu explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meloxicam-vs-ibuprofen-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam vs. ibuprofen for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs, in general, are considered a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/resources\/ada-library\/oral-health-topics\/oral-analgesics-for-acute-dental-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-line treatment for acute dental pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are preferred over opioids. Of the NSAIDs,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/adanews.ada.org\/ada-news\/2024\/february\/new-ada-guideline-recommends-nsaids-to-manage-dental-pain-in-adults-adolescents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen and naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are much more commonly recommended by dentists than meloxicam. In fact, one of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/ibuprofen-drug-facts-label\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen\u2019s FDA-approved uses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is for the treatment of toothaches, whereas meloxicam is not FDA-approved for this use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, ibuprofen is used more in dentistry because it is effective, fast-acting, and readily available,\u201d Dr. Liu shares. \u201cAlso, it has a shorter half-life, so it is best for short-term use, as there is less risk of long-term side effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, as an NSAID, meloxicam has its place when it comes to treating tooth pain. People experiencing chronic inflammation or individuals needing longer-lasting relief may be prescribed meloxicam. \u201cFor instance, a patient recovering from major oral surgery might have a better experience with meloxicam because it\u2019s a sustained-action drug,\u201d Dr. Liu explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally best for mild to moderate pain that needs immediate relief. Factors like medical history, kidney function, and other medications the person is taking will guide the choice, according to Dr. Liu.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meloxicam-dosage-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam dosage for tooth pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam is usually dosed at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/drug-guide\/nsaids\/meloxicam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.5\u201315 mg once daily for adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who experience conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Liu says that dentists usually prescribe meloxicam at the same dosage, at 7.5\u201315 mg per day. However, \u201cthis depends upon the actual severity of the pain and the general health of the patient,\u201d he notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"potential-side-effects-of-meloxicam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential side effects of meloxicam<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam isn\u2019t without side effects, and because it is a stronger medication than NSAIDs like ibuprofen, the side effects can be more intense for some people. \u201cMeloxicam can cause some side effects, which are similar to those of other NSAIDs but may be more pronounced due to its long-acting nature,\u201d Dr. Kunik says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/meloxicam-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meloxicam side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal effects, like nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Face redness and puffiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood fluctuations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unwanted hair growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salt retention<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinning skin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of meloxicam are possible and can include muscle damage, psychosis, increased vulnerability to infection, high blood pressure, blood sugar changes, seizures, stomach ulcers, and serious allergic reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-meloxicam-for-tooth-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to meloxicam for tooth pain\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common alternatives to meloxicam for tooth pain are popular OTC pain relievers. \u201cFor most dental pain cases, I prefer to start with ibuprofen or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they have more predictable safety profiles and are effective for short-term use,\u201d Dr. Liu says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about if those aren\u2019t options or aren\u2019t working well enough? \u201cIf I have patients who are contraindicated to NSAIDs or have more complex pain profiles, I may consider alternatives to NSAIDs such as acetaminophen combined with a low dose of opioids\u2014only if I have to,\u201d Dr. Liu says.
