It\u2019s also approved to prevent migraines, manage essential tremors, and treat symptoms from pheochromocytoma, a kind of adrenal gland tumor. Off-label uses include the treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, and hemangiomas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/propranolol-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may have heard of propranolol insomnia, which describes the phenomenon of experiencing sleep issues while taking it. While propranolol insomnia happens to some individuals, it\u2019s not very common. We\u2019ll cover why it happens, what to do if you experience it, and when to see your healthcare provider to discuss it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-propranolol-make-you-sleepy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does propranolol make you sleepy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue and sleepiness are well-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/propranolol-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This often leaves people feeling sleepy or lethargic.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-propranolol-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can propranolol cause insomnia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite the symptoms of fatigue that propranolol can cause, propranolol can paradoxically cause both drowsiness and insomnia, according to Dr. Benge. \u201cPropranolol may interfere with normal sleep patterns by reducing melatonin levels and altering REM sleep, preventing restful sleep,\u201d she says. So someone may feel drowsy while taking propranolol but struggle to get a good night\u2019s sleep as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPropranolol can cause insomnia for some people, but it\u2019s not something everyone experiences. If it does cause sleep issues, the problem might get better over time as your body adjusts to the medication,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sleepopolis.com\/experts\/dr-raj-dasgupta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quadruple board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine, pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research supports this potential occurrence as well. For instance, a 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the American Heart Association\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/HYPERTENSIONAHA.120.16590\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypertension<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that insomnia, unusual dreams, and sleep disorders occur at times in people taking beta blockers like propranolol. As the researchers point out, beta blockers have also been linked to nightmares, hallucinations, and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for how long insomnia can last while taking propranolol, that also varies between one individual and another. \u201cThe duration of insomnia varies depending on the individual, the dosage, and how the body adapts to the medication,\u201d says Dr. Benge. \u201cIn some cases, insomnia subsides after a few days to weeks as the body adjusts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-propranolol-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does propranolol cause insomnia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not known why propranolol causes insomnia. But<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s41105-021-00330-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research has found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that propranolol crosses the blood-brain barrier. In doing so, propranolol \u201cmay interfere with neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, which play a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle,\u201d Dr. Benge says. Additionally,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11055-022-01270-y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol can reduce nocturnal melatonin production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it more difficult for people to fall asleep and stay asleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors may impact your sleeping experience while taking propranolol. Dr. Benge says the risk of insomnia may increase if propranolol is taken with other medications that affect sleep, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cns-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system (CNS) stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFactors such as stress, which often leads to propranolol use, or the timing of medication administration may also contribute to sleep disturbances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-propranolol-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent propranolol insomnia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing propranolol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/insomnia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are several strategies you can consider. Here are some tips from Dr. Benge:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take propranolol earlier in the day to reduce its impact on sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid doses closer to bedtime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-dosage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin supplementation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with healthcare provider approval.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your healthcare provider about lowering the dose of propranolol to decrease CNS-related side effects like insomnia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your provider about switching to a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/propranolol-hcl-er\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting or extended-release formulation of propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and take it in the morning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-any-propranolol-alternatives-that-won-t-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there any propranolol alternatives that won\u2019t cause insomnia?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Rabii, finding a viable alternative depends in part on the reason you were prescribed propranolol. \u201cIn most cases, if you have to be on a beta blocker specifically, they can all potentially cause insomnia,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/memorialhermann.org\/doctors\/cardiovascular-disease-specialists\/dr-kevin-rabii-do-1326579277\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin Rabii, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiologist with Memorial Hermann. As such, you should ask your healthcare provider if there is a medication in a different drug class that is appropriate to treat your condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cardioselective-beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the only option, keep in mind that some people might experience fewer side effects with certain beta blockers over others. \u201cDiscussing alternative medications with your healthcare provider, such as selective beta blockers that do not cross the blood-brain barrier (e.g.,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atenolol\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), might be a viable option,\u201d Dr. Benge says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-propranolol-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other propranolol side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness, sleep disturbances, and insomnia aren\u2019t the only potential side effects of propranolol.
