Wegovy is typically recommended to be used in combination with lifestyle changes like a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the growing popularity of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) like Wegovy, you may have seen advertisements for compounded semaglutide products\u2014but are these products exactly the same as Wegovy? Although compounded semaglutide may be similar to Wegovy, these products have not been tested for safety and effectiveness in clinical trials, and are not exactly the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is compounded semaglutide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA describes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/guidance-compliance-regulatory-information\/human-drug-compounding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a medicine that is customized to the specific needs of an individual patient. Compounded drugs are prepared by a licensed pharmacist or other healthcare provider in a compounding pharmacy or outsourcing facility. A compounded drug may be mixed, altered, or combined to make a product that is specifically suited to an individual patient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, if a drug like Wegovy is available in pharmacies, compounding pharmacies or facilities are not permitted to compound the drug. However, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/compounding-when-drugs-are-fdas-drug-shortages-list\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that when there is a shortage of a particular drug, compounding is allowed to ensure the patient can access treatment. As of Feb. 21, 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\">FDA determined that the semaglutide shortage is over<\/a>, giving compounding pharmacies a deadline for ceasing the distribution of compounded versions of injectable semaglutide that are essentially identical to FDA-approved versions (e.g., Wegovy and Rybelsus). That deadline is April 22, 2025, for state-licensed pharmacies and physicians, and May 22, 2025, for outsourcing facilities.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that compounded versions of drugs like Wegovy are not approved by the FDA. This means they have not been tested for safety, effectiveness, or quality control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novomedlink.com\/semaglutide\/medicines.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the pharmaceutical company that manufactures FDA-approved semaglutide products. It currently makes three drugs that contain semaglutide, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy, a once-weekly injectable medicine for weight loss and cardiovascular risk reduction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a once-weekly injectable medicine for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction, often prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for a non-FDA-approved use) for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a daily oral medicine for managing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These three brand-name medicines are the only FDA-approved semaglutide products. There are no studies on the safety and effectiveness of compounded semaglutide\u2014either alone or in combination with these other ingredients. The FDA notes that compounding facilities may use different salt forms of semaglutide (such as semaglutide acetate or semaglutide sodium), rather than the original base form that was approved by the FDA. On Feb. 24, 2025, a compounding industry group called the Outsourcing Facilities Association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.503bs.org\/_files\/ugd\/90544a_2f297f7c5f2a45fb89f64fe6a5dcb5c7.pdf\">filed a complaint against the FDA<\/a>, stating that its decision to announce the end of the semaglutide shortage was \u201carbitrary and capricious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you are considering using a compounded semaglutide product despite the risks, consult a healthcare provider.
