The branded formulation Ozempic recently also became FDA approved to reduce the risks of major cardiovascular outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus with known heart disease, and to reduce the risk of kidney damage and cardiovascular related deaths in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease (CKD).It works by enhancing insulin release, reducing glucagon production, and slowing stomach emptying, which can reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness, and encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/semaglutide-weight-loss\/\">weight loss<\/a>. Like any prescription medicine, taking semaglutide may cause some unpleasant side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of semaglutide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9631444\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common side effects of semaglutide reported from clinical trials include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation. These gastrointestinal problems are assumed to be caused by the drug activating GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1Rs)\u2014proteins responsible for regulating blood sugar levels and other bodily functions\u2014and delaying gastric or stomach emptying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/#common-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal side effects of semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eructation (belching or burping)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal distension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyspepsia (indigestion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatulence (gas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost patients will experience at least one side effect, but these effects are generally minimal if the dosing is gradual and appropriate,\u201d says Jessica Marren, APRN, CRNA, the owner, CEO, and lead injector at Bella Bar Medspa in Brownsville, Texas. \u201cProper titration (slow increasing the dose of a medication by very small amounts) and monitoring significantly reduce the intensity of these symptoms, allowing most patients to tolerate the medication well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-semaglutide-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do semaglutide side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Megan Horsham, MD, a board-certified physician in emergency medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuarywellnessinstitute.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanctuary Wellness Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lakeland, Florida, when and if semaglutide side effects begin varies person by person. \u201cSome people may experience no side effects ever if they follow their doctor&#8217;s suggestions and slowly titrate the dosage of medication properly,\u201d she explains.\u00a0 \u201cSome people tend to be more sensitive to medications and may have subtle side effects that could start as soon as the first injection. Most side effects, if any, are minimal and temporary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-semaglutide-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do semaglutide side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marren says that symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and heartburn are short-term and typically resolve within a few weeks once your body adjusts to the use of this injectable medicine. \u201cRare side effects, such as gallbladder issues or pancreatitis, may require discontinuation of the medication,\u201d she explains. \u201cThese long-term effects are uncommon but require close monitoring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a interactions\u2014medications, procedures, or surgeries that should be avoided because they may be harmful to your health\u2014that can lead to an increased risk of unwanted side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Horsham and Marren, semaglutide should be avoided for the following medical conditions or situations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medical history of pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity to the drug or its components<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastroparesis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI also warn patients with a history of gallstones or gallbladder disease that still have a gallbladder that losing weight (and not necessarily the medication itself) can worsen these conditions,\u201d Dr. Horsham explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to lower your risk of experiencing semaglutide side effects, Marren and Dr. Horsham recommend the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Follow your healthcare provider\u2019s instructions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you begin semaglutide, listen to your doctor about a conservative or slow titration schedule of the medication to keep you on the lowest dose that is working and not causing side effects,\u201d Dr. Horsham says. \u201cIf you\u2019re vomiting, your dose is too high.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t overeat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cEat slowly and pay attention to your body,\u201d Dr. Horsham says. \u201cYou will fill up very quickly, so overeating on this medication could cause stomach upset.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid alcohol: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea and vomiting, Dr. Horsham advises that you avoid consuming alcoholic beverages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to Marren, you should aim to drink at least half a gallon of water per day to maintain adequate hydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-side-effects-of-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat side effects of semaglutide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience side effects from semaglutide injections, dosage adjustments may relieve symptoms. \u201cYou can lower the dose or continue the same dose until side effects have subsided before increasing the dose,\u201d Dr. Horsham says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For gastrointestinal issues, Marren recommends changing eating habits and taking over-the-counter medications to help side effects subside from this diabetes medication. \u201c[For constipation], increase fiber intake with green leafy vegetables, maintain adequate water consumption, and use a stool softener only if needed,\u201d she says. \u201c[Diarrhea] will more than likely resolve within a couple of days. Stick to a bland diet, such as BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast), and ensure adequate electrolyte intake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing severe side effects of semaglutide, it\u2019s best to seek medical attention from your healthcare provider or visit your nearest emergency room if you\u2019re having severe complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious adverse effects of semaglutide can include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid tumors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity or serious allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute kidney injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholelithiasis (gallstones)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angiodemia (tissue swelling of your face, eyes, and lips)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syncope (fainting and loss of consciousness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Semaglutide, is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (sold under the brand names Ozempic as an injectable formulation, and Rybelsus as an oral tablet) or for weight management (sold under the brand name Wegovy as an injectable formulation).
