It is FDA-approved for use in people who don\u2019t produce enough digestive enzymes because they have cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatectomy, or other pancreas conditions. People on Creon need to eat a diet that supports the drug\u2019s effectiveness. That\u2019s why people on Creon must take a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/creon\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with each meal and snack, according to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedlinePlus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also recommends reducing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fiber\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiber intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since fiber can reduce the effectiveness of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/creon\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She and Kelly Taliaferro, RD, a Dallas-based registered dietitian and digestive disorder specialist at<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huesnutrition.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hues Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggest limiting or avoiding the following foods and drinks while on Creon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-high-fiber-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. High-fiber foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While generally a healthy part of a balanced diet, high-fiber foods should be limited while taking Creon. \u201cExcessive amounts of fiber are known to interfere with the effectiveness of Creon. This is because fiber can bind with the enzymes in Creon, reducing its ability to break down nutrients effectively,\u201d says Dr. Rao.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-fiber foods include beans, lentils, berries, nuts, and whole grains. Additionally, two labels often indicate a high fiber content: Prebiotic and low-carb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe term <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/culturelle-pro-prebiotic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prebiotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is basically a fancy term for fiber,\u201d Taliaferro says. Additionally, \u201cmanufacturers often add fiber, such as inulin, to decrease the net carbs in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-keto-diet-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-carbohydrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> snacks. Many low-carb or keto products have five grams of fiber or more per serving,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-greasy-or-fatty-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Greasy or fatty foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFried and greasy foods can overwhelm the enzymes in Creon, which can lead to GI issues,\u201d warns Dr. Rao. Of course, not all fats are the same. Some fat is necessary for good nutrition. Taliaferro suggests that choosing healthy fats \u201clike <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/olive-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olive oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, avocados, and nuts\u201d when on Creon can help you stay nourished while warding off stomach pain and diarrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-foods-or-drinks-high-in-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Foods or drinks high in sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugary foods like candy, snack cakes, and ice cream, and sugary beverages like frappuccinos and soda, can exacerbate gut issues while taking Creon. Though sugar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/creon\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not directly interact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the drug, Dr. Rao says too much sugar can aggravate malabsorption issues (the problem Creon is intended to treat). At the same time, sugary beverages can irritate the digestive tract. Ultimately, too much sugar can make gastrointestinal symptoms worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no evidence that alcohol directly interacts with Creon, Taliaferro points to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537191\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that alcohol can damage the pancreas. \u201cSince drinking alcohol can make pancreatic function worse over time, avoiding alcohol can help you keep your pancreas healthy while taking Creon,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-hot-drinks-during-dosing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Hot drinks (during dosing)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No known interaction exists between Creon and caffeinated beverages like tea or coffee. However, it\u2019s important to avoid taking a dose of Creon with high-temperature drinks such as a hot latte, cup of tea, or even hot lemon water. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creon.co.uk\/-\/media\/creoncouk\/assets\/pdf\/2024\/uk_non_2024_00104_pert-booklet-printed-version.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viatris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmaceutical company that produces pancreatic enzymes, exposing these pills to heat can damage the enzymes, decreasing the drug\u2019s effectiveness. Take Creon with room temperature or cold water, and save the hot coffee for another time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-eat-while-taking-creon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you eat while taking Creon?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rxabbvie.com\/pdf\/creon_pi.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Creon should always be taken with food and plenty of liquid, such as water or juice. Taking Creon with slightly acidic food, such as applesauce, plain Greek yogurt, or a banana, is also sometimes recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond following these dosage instructions, people on Creon should talk to their healthcare provider about which foods will best support their health and the drug\u2019s effectiveness. Dietary recommendations may include foods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-gut-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that promote gut health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as fermented foods (kefir, yogurt, and sauerkraut).
