style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that lisinopril treatment was correlated with reduced mortality rates in patients with diabetes who had myocardial infarctions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kidney protection: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood sugar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/diabetes\/overview\/preventing-problems\/diabetic-kidney-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can harm the tiny blood blood pressure and urinary albumin excretion rate\u2014how doctors test kidney function\u2014more effectively than 20 mg\/day. However, taking 60 mg\/day didn\u2019t offer any additional benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But healthcare providers are unlikely to start with 40 mg right off the bat. \u201cFor patients who are naive to blood pressure medications, we would start off at a low dose to see if the medication suits them and then titrate the dose to achieve the blood pressure goals,\u201d Dr. Patwa says. \u201cThe goal blood pressure for patients with diabetes is &lt;140\/90 or &lt;130\/80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) if you have high-risk features.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That dosage might also depend on the patient\u2019s age, the severity of their hypertension, any side effects they\u2019ve experienced while taking lisinopril, and their other medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-for-lisinopril-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisinopril usually starts to work within a few hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the first dose. For example, diuretics, insulins, and oral hypoglycemic agents can increase the risk of hypotension, while nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may make lisinopril less effective. Certain cancer drugs may increase the risk of angioedema. ACE inhibitors can also interact with lithium drugs and cause toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women should not take lisinopril, since it can cause injury or death to the fetus. And breastfeeding mothers shouldn\u2019t take it either, because it\u2019s unclear how much of the drug is transmitted through breast milk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including vitamins, herbs, and supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lisinopril-vs-other-treatments-for-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisinopril vs. other treatments for diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike diabetes medications, lisinopril doesn\u2019t directly alter the body\u2019s blood glucose levels. It primarily affects blood pressure and may indirectly affect blood sugar and protect against certain outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, biguanides like metformin lower blood sugar by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/25004-biguanides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decreasing the liver\u2019s glucose production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/13901-glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulate the pancreas\u2019 insulin production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/alpha-glucosidase-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">block the breakdown of carbohydrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lisinopril, on the other hand, widens the blood vessels, which might slightly improve insulin sensitivity by delivering insulin to cells more efficiently.
