How do ACE inhibitors like lisinopril work for diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Lisinopril (brand name: <\/span>Zestril<\/span><\/a>) doesn\u2019t directly control blood sugar levels, so it\u2019s not technically a diabetes medication. Rather, it belongs to a drug class called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which also includes <\/span>ramipril<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>enalapril<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

ACE inhibitors work through the inhibition of enzymes that produce a substance called angiotensin II, which constricts the blood vessels. This action decreases blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s much like how water flows through pipes in your house,\u201d says <\/span>Danielle Kelvas, MD<\/span><\/a>, primary care physician at <\/span>The HCG Institute<\/span><\/a> and founder of <\/span>DKMD Consulting<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWater flows faster and at a higher pressure through smaller pipes, so lisinopril helps to make your blood vessels diameter a bit wider to lower blood pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Karishma Patwa, MD<\/span><\/a>, a cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology and contributor to<\/span> www.labfinder.com<\/span><\/a>, adds that ACE inhibitors reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke and prevent the development of kidney disease in patients with diabetes. \u201cThey also have the additional benefit of improving insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

ACE inhibitors are particularly useful for protecting kidney function in people with diabetes. \u201cIt doesn’t affect glucose control or lipid profiles negatively and is beneficial for cardiac and kidney health in patients with diabetes,\u201d Dr. Kelvas says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, while lisinopril might not be the first-line treatment for lowering blood sugar, doctors often use it or medications like it to help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of further medical issues.<\/span><\/p>\n
