Their popularity is in part because they work so well. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mimic the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hormone to increase insulin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secretion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and slow digestion, helping manage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and decrease <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wave of semaglutide medications on the market comes as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable versions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, despite very little head-to-head data comparing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some evidence suggests <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable forms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be slightly more effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a 2021 report published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Endocrinology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that over 30\u201356 weeks, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduced A1C numbers by 1.5\u20131.8%, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduced them by 1.0\u20131.4%. A 2024 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolism<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">however, showed similar A1C decreases for injectable and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral forms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story is pretty much the same for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014both work well, but there\u2019s a chance that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is slightly better. An observational study from Croatia, published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetology, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that the same proportion of injectable and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients achieved \u22655% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In comparison, slightly more injectable formulation patients achieved \u226510% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than those who took tablets. The above study from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolism<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said: \u201cThe average change in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was similar in the two groups (-3.7 kg with injectable and -3.3 kg with oral at 18 months), but more new users of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lost \u22655% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Michael Chichak, MD, medical director of MEDvidi, \u201cThis is due to the increased bioavailability achieved by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcutaneous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injections, which allows for a more consistent dose. However, the tablets provide convenience and appeal to patients who are afraid of needles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there\u2019s a much larger difference for anyone with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has data to support <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risk reduction, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not,\u201d says Dr. Diana Roman, Pharm.D., clinical pharmacist and assistant professor at Marshall B. Ketchum University. \u201cIn patients with diabetes and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disease or high risk for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disease, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be preferred over <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risk reduction perspective. However, if a patient prefers an oral option, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still a good choice for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glycemic control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"semaglutide-tablets-vs-injections-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vs. injections: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tablets and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcutaneous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/professional\/clinical-pharmacology\/pharmacokinetics\/drug-absorption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circulate the body differently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014tablets are absorbed through the digestive system, while injections go straight into the bloodstream. Going through the digestive system metabolizes tablets and causes the medication to have less bioavailability, so oral doses typically are higher than injections. However, per Dr. Alatassi, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is associated with higher rates of gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea compared to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable form<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These symptoms are often dose-dependent and more common during the titration phase.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are similar, too. In rare cases, both formulations can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inflammation (pancreatitis), gallstones, low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), increased heart rate, and complications with diabetic retinopathy\u2014an eye issue that stems from diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For patients who decided they\u2019d rather forgo needles, it\u2019s possible to switch from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable forms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once-daily oral semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis requires careful consideration of dosing equivalency, adherence, and therapeutic goals,\u201d Dr. Alatassi says. \u201cA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should supervise this transition to ensure safety and efficacy.\u201d The change might also come with some changes to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10824647\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that patients\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increased by an average of 9 mg\/dL after going from once-weekly 0.5 mg <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to daily 7 mg <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cost-of-semaglutide-tablets-vs-injections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vs. injections<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people who have no preference between tablets and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcutaneous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injections, the decision might come down to price.
