As a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factor Xa inhibitor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it blocks the Factor Xa protein, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-clot-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contributes to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jantoven<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coumadin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heparin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rivaroxaban<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While helpful, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can have side effects in seniors, such as persistent bleeding, bruising easily, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-are-blood-thinners-prescribed-to-seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescribed to seniors?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This medicine is prescribed to prevent and treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the legs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/deep-vein-thrombosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep vein thrombosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and lungs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pulmonary-embolism-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulmonary embolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), as well as reduce the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and clots in people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also prescribed after certain procedures. For example, a medical professional may prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knee replacement surgery<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, some patients may need a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a bioprosthetic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart valve<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> replacement (though more data is needed), according to a 2021 study in the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Journal of Pharmacy Technology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-side-effects-of-eliquis-in-the-elderly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the elderly?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any medication, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can have side effects. In particular, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause uncontrolled bleeding because it thins the blood, as well as these most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising easily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal bleeding is another common (and invisible) concern in seniors, says Dr. Rohit Vuppuluri, MD, a double-board-certified interventional cardiologist at Chicago Heart and Vascular Specialists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the biggest concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSenior citizens may be more prone to getting cuts, bumps, and bruises, and they may notice that their bleeding takes longer to stop,\u201d says Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, MD, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and medical director of the structural heart program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe, uncontrollable, or unusual bleeding (with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleeding gums<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nosebleeds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrombocytopenia, or low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platelet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is discontinued abruptly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8920639\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hematoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in rare cases<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side effects shouldn\u2019t last longer than 48 hours, according to Dr. Vuppuluri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Chen agrees it should clear from the body within roughly two to three days, meaning users should stop experiencing side effects afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, given those <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he prescribes this medication to seniors with caution. \u201cWe especially worry about people who may be prone to falling, and in this population, we may advise against taking a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d he says. \u201cIn many circumstances, I lower the dose of the medication in an elderly patient or even recommend stopping it altogether.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people should not take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all, such as those with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2019\/202155s024lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiphospholipid syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to the increased risk of blood clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that interact with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include aspirin, other anti-clotting medications, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and inducers of CYP3A4. Additionally, there\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.escardio.org\/The-ESC\/Press-Office\/Press-releases\/risk-of-internal-bleeding-doubles-when-people-on-anticoagulants-take-nsaid-paink\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internal bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the patient is also taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2816687\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concomitant use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of selective serotonin reuptake <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients should avoid taking some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vitamins, and herbs while on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/consumer-healthcare\/medication-information\/medication-interactions-food-supplements-and-other-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s Wort<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vitamin E, and possibly ginseng<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can weaken the effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increase the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of bleeding problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or interact with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, large doses of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can make the medicine less effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-thinners-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol does not mix well with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it can increase bleeding risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prescribing provider will set the specific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each patient. The tablet can be taken with or without food and can be crushed (with the provider\u2019s instructions) if the patient has trouble swallowing the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a half-life of 12 hours, it needs to be taken twice daily\u2014once in the morning and once at night, Dr. Vuppuluri says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side note: The half-life may be slightly longer for senior citizens. \u201cPatients over the age of 75 years old may metabolize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slower,\u201d Dr. Vuppuluri says. \u201cElderly patients with decreased body weight and renal function are also at risk of slower metabolizing of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it \u201cmay be up to twice as long in a senior citizen compared to a younger person,\u201d according to Dr. Chen. He explains that people\u2019s kidneys and liver may not be able to process medications as efficiently as they age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t require people to avoid any foods, certain foods (such as high-fat foods) and caffeine may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/foods-to-avoid-with-eliquis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exacerbate health problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contributed to the need for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first place, such as heart conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be stopped (and needs to be sometimes, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-before-surgery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but with caution. \u201cThe risk of stopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that [the user] will no longer have the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood-thinning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effect that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was originally prescribed for,\u201d Dr. Chen says. \u201cDepending on the original reason for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they may then be at an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for developing a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both doctors urge patients to discuss stopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
