These are some of the hottest medications for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country, helping millions manage their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and weight. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> imitates a hormone called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide-1,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which stimulates insulin production. It also delays <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastric emptying<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tempering the appetite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide is most often administered as an injection, but it is also available as a tablet. Drug manufacturer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces it under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it for managing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood glucose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might prescribe it off-label for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cheapest-semaglutide-injection\/\">Cheapest semaglutide injection<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there\u2019s no generic version of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral semaglutide,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and according to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is patent-protected until 2034, so there likely won\u2019t be one until then. Some compounding pharmacies might make <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> themselves, but these drugs aren\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or inspected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from how you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage forms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosing schedule are the main differences<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The standard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 7\u201314 mg, once daily, while an injection like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only requires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a 0.5\u20132 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mg dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once weekly. In conjunction with lifestyle changes, they are a great way to lower fasting and postprandial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666970624000143\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes Epidemiology and Management<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that oral semaglutide reduced hemoglobin A1C by an average of 3.1%.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2021.645617\/full\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had similar (albeit slightly less significant) results, showing an A1C reduction of 1.0\u20131.4%. Either way, it has proven effective in lowering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it&#8217;s technically an off-label treatment, oral semaglutide is just as effective for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-022-02026-4\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2022 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found a mean <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduction of 15.2% over 104 weeks, compared to 2.6% for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group. Likewise, the study from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes Epidemiology and Management <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saw a mean reduction in body mass index (BMI) of 13% at six months and 19.7% at 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There haven\u2019t been any studies directly comparing the efficacy of oral and injectable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both have shown to be safe and effective in separate trials, but<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38683498\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that injectable versions might be marginally more effective for A1C reduction and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, per Dr. Roman, there\u2019s a difference in their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects. \u201cWhile <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has data to support its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risk reduction, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not,\u201d she says. So, injectable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be a better option for people who have diabetes and a high risk for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-semaglutide-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide tablets<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high demand for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its fluctuations in supply has left many people looking for substitutes. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few good options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there are also a few unauthorized ones you should avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other diabetes medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrugs like SGLT-2 inhibitors, like empagliflozin, or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agonists, like dulaglutide, may be appropriate choices for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regulation,\u201d Dr. Chichak says. \u201cNewer drugs, such as tirzepatide, a dual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and GIP receptor agonist, are quickly gaining traction and demonstrating encouraging outcomes in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other popular diabetes medications include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gliflozins (Farxiga, Jardiance), and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Glucotrol, Amaryl).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-about-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about compounded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compounding-pharmacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounding pharmacies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> create medications\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-compounded-semaglutide-made-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014from scratch, sometimes custom-mixing drugs tailored to the patient\u2019s needs. These pharmacies are subject to regulation by state boards but not by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approvals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has expressed concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about compounded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, primarily because of reports about patients accidentally taking too much.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"avoid-online-sources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid online sources<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warns against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> purchasing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products online after discovering counterfeit versions being marketed illegally. These counterfeit drugs, they said, could contain too little <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the wrong ingredients, or no active ingredient at all, rendering them ineffective and unsafe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients must avoid over-the-counter products claiming to contain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or similar compounds,\u201d Dr. Alatassi says. \u201cThese unapproved products often lack quality control and pose significant health risks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should only be prescribed by a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"otc-weight-loss-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also a range of other over-the-counter <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements. Americans spend around<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/WeightLoss-HealthProfessional\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$2 billion on them per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but do they work? The only OTC <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pill approved by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Alli (orlistat), and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3125014\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it\u2019s effective for obese patients as an adjunct to therapeutic lifestyle changes. However,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/oby.23110\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cited a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of other OTC supplements.
