GLP-1<\/span> drugs like <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> might have started out as <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span> medications, but their <\/span>weight loss<\/span> potential is what thrust them into the national spotlight. And<\/span> Zepbound<\/span><\/a> (tirzepatide) is one of the latest additions in the <\/span>GLP-1<\/span> landscape, one specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for chronic <\/span>weight management<\/span>. In clinical trials, patients taking <\/span>Zepbound<\/span> lost over 20% of their body weight on average. But the question many people have is: Will insurance pay for it? Some plans might, but with Aetna, Zepbound coverage ultimately depends on the plan and the patient\u2019s reason for taking it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does <\/span>Aetna<\/span> cover <\/span>Zepbound<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Every insurance provider is different, and most have a wide range of <\/span>benefits plans<\/span>, each with their own policies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certain plans require <\/span>prior authorization<\/span><\/a>, which is how the insurance company confirms that a drug meets its criteria for coverage. That could mean the <\/span>prescribing<\/span> healthcare provider has to submit additional details showing why the drug is necessary. Or it could require a process called<\/span> step therapy<\/span><\/a>, which involves trying (and failing) other drugs, like <\/span>metformin<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>phentermine<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>bupropion<\/span><\/a>, before moving on to <\/span>Zepbound<\/span>. There might also be limits on the strength of the medication or the quantity you can receive. All of that info, however, is contained in each plan\u2019s <\/span>formulary<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would say about 50% of the time, or more, we have to do some type of <\/span>prior authorization<\/span>,\u201d estimates<\/span> Supriya Rao<\/span><\/a>, MD<\/span>, gastroenterologist and managing partner at Integrated Gastroenterology Consultants. \u201cAnd then, whether or not someone needs to try and fail another drug first is around a quarter of my patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Does <\/span>Aetna<\/span> cover <\/span>Zepbound<\/span> for <\/span>weight loss<\/span>?<\/span><\/h3>\n

As of July 1, 2025, many <\/span>Aetna standard commercial plans<\/span><\/a> removed Zepbound from their formularies when prescribed for the purpose of weight management.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aetna plans that do cover Zepbound for weight loss require patients to meet particular criteria to get coverage. Specifically, according to <\/span>Aetna<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>Pharmacy Clinical Policy Bulletins<\/span><\/a>, patients need to:<\/span><\/p>\n
