{"id":631671,"date":"2025-03-14T20:06:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T00:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=631671"},"modified":"2025-11-07T19:27:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T00:27:05","slug":"generic-glp-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/generic-glp-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Are there generic GLP-1 drugs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists) are a popular class of medications used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise to help manage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and support weight loss in individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/obesity-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have become household names, but they can come with a high price tag. That leaves many people wondering: Are there generic GLP-1 drugs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that two generic GLP-1 medications, exenatide and liraglutide, are FDA-approved and available in the U.S. However, most GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, don\u2019t yet have generic alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-current-landscape-of-generic-glp-1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current landscape of generic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The million-dollar question: Is there a generic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Not yet. The U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has not approved a generic formulation of semaglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generics for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs that also contain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, GIP\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agonists made by Eli <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and containing the active ingredient tripeptide, do not yet have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic versions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are, however, two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have generics available:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.amneal.com\/news\/press-releases\/press-release-details\/2024\/Amneal-Resubmits-DHE-Autoinjector-New-Drug-Application-and-Receives-U.S.-FDA-Approval-of-Exenatide-its-First-Generic-Injectable-GLP-1-Agonist\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exenatide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (made by Amneal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmaceuticals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a generic for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/byetta-10-mcg-pen\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AstraZeneca makes Byetta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two brand-name drugs contain liraglutide, both made by Novo Nordisk\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight management, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction. Both versions now have a generic, so there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide-weight-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/fda-approves-first-generic-glp-1-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/victoza-generic-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/frequently-asked-questions-popular-topics\/generic-drugs-questions-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bring more competition into the marketplace, resulting in significant cost savings for patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug to be approved, it must undergo extensive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to establish its safety and effectiveness. For a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-generic-drugs-as-good-as-brand-name-medicines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be approved, drug manufacturers must submit an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug has already been proven to be safe and effective, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must demonstrate that it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary\/abbreviated-new-animal-drug-applications\/bioequivalence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bioequivalent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug. For example, it must have the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active ingredient<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, same strength(s), same dosage form (i.e., oral tablet or injection), and the same uses\u2014although inactive ingredients may vary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, except <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exenatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the most serious warning required by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This warning is based on a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of thyroid C-cell tumors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> observed in animal studies, although it is not known if this applies to humans. Because of this risk, people with a personal or family history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medullary thyroid carcinoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MTC) or those who have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome Type<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2 (MEN 2) should not use these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"exenatide-injection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exenatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=53d03c03-ebf7-418d-88a8-533eabd2ee4f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exenatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injectable drug. It is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) twice a day for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e6cb5c8f-e97f-4a6a-95a4-939fd2393949\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exenatide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in November 2024. Like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is injected twice daily to improve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> control in adults with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exenatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling jittery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"liraglutide-injection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liraglutide injection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=5a9ef4ea-c76a-4d34-a604-27c5b505f5a4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injectable drug. It is injected subcutaneously once a day for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for patients age 10 and older). It is also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower the risk of major adverse <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> events (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> death, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/panic-attack-vs-heart-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-a-stroke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in adults with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and heart disease. A generic version of Victoza, liraglutide, was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved by the FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3946d389-0926-4f77-a708-0acb8153b143\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It is FDA-approved for weight loss and long-term weight management in adults and adolescents 12 years and older with obesity, as well as adults with overweight who have at least one weight-related health condition. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tevapharm.com\/news-and-events\/press-releases\/press-release-details\/2025\/Teva-Announces-FDA-Approval-and-Launch-of-Generic-Saxenda-liraglutide-injection--First-Generic-GLP-1-Indicated-for-Weight-Loss\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a generic version of Saxenda, also known as liraglutide, in August 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Note: Both generic products contain the same active ingredient, liraglutide, but are formulated and labeled to be substituted for either Victoza or Saxenda. They are not considered to be interchangeable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Saxenda) include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"compounded-glp-1s-vs-generics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vs. generics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason many people ask if there is a generic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and other similar drugs) is likely due to previous advertisements for compounded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tirzepatide. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows compounding drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/compounding-when-drugs-are-fdas-drug-shortages-list\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when there is a shortage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the compounded versions may be less expensive, though, they are not approved by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, now that these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortages have been resolved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compounded versions are no longer legally permitted to be made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-future-of-glp-1-generics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popularity of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/aha-center-health-innovation-market-scan\/2024-05-21-3-ways-glp-1-drugs-could-impact-your-hospitals-future\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continue rising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with experts predicting at least 20% annual growth. The global <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market is projected to reach approximately $133 billion by 2030. It may take some time until we see generic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or generic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tirzepatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zepbound-vs-mounjaro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2014likely in the early 2030s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are very popular, with many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> professionals <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them to patients for the treatment of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other conditions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can save patients significant amounts of money. Currently, the only generic GLP-1s are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exenatide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
