Choosing between the two medications could be a matter of your healthcare provider\u2019s preference, but knowing about the potential side effects of atorvastatin and rosuvastatin can inform your decision. Certain adverse effects can be more likely with one, while other side effects occur more often with the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"difference-between-atorvastatin-and-rosuvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference between atorvastatin and rosuvastatin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are both generic medications that are also available as brand-name medications. Atorvastatin is available as brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lipitor#coupons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and rosuvastatin is available as brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/crestor#coupons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because of their potency, the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology classifies them as high-intensity statins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are available in tablet form with various dosing strengths, each taken once daily. Prices for the two drugs are similar. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/atorvastatin-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the average retail price of 30, 10 mg rosuvastatin tablets is $227 for 30, 10 mg tablets, and the average retail price of rosuvastatin is $140 for 30, 40 mg tablets. With a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare prescription discount card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you could pay $9 at Kroger for atorvastatin and $8 at Kroger for rosuvastatin. While quite similar, they do have their differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"metabolism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liver metabolizes atorvastatin to a much higher extent than it metabolizes rosuvastatin. Specifically, the CYP3A4 enzyme is responsible for metabolizing atorvastatin. To a lesser extent, the CYP2C9 enzyme is responsible for metabolizing rosuvastatin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"distribution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distribution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosuvastatin is more hydrophilic, meaning it tends to distribute into fatty tissues and cells. In contrast, rosuvastatin is carried by proteins in plasma and acts more specifically within the liver.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"potency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potency<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With regard to potency in lowering LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19064019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin is more powerful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than atorvastatin. As such, rosuvastatin may be better at reducing the risk of cardiovascular events than atorvastatin. They are equally recommended in national guidelines when high-intensity statin therapy is indicated, such as for the secondary prevention of another heart attack in the setting of coronary artery disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-atorvastatin-safer-than-rosuvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is atorvastatin safer than rosuvastatin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, there are important differences between the two titans of the statin world. Those distinctions may explain why rosuvastatin may carry a higher risk for some side effects, while atorvastatin has a higher risk for others. While neither can be labeled as safer overall, arguments can be made for either when it comes to specific adverse effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"muscle-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain (myalgia is a commonly feared statin side effect, along with extreme cases of rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31718234\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that rosuvastatin had similar rates of myalgia as placebo pills, while atorvastatin was more likely to cause muscle pain. This was just one study, though, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12860216\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate similar drug tolerability among both drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"kidney-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney disease is a common concern among people with hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes mellitus, two conditions that often occur with high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Some clinical trials have suggested that rosuvastatin may have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9529194\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential to cause abnormal kidney function tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although other research refutes this. If there is a risk of this outcome, it is thought to be outweighed by the drug\u2019s benefits in heart disease and atherosclerosis. Healthcare providers may choose to limit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\/dosage\">rosuvastatin dosage<\/a> in people with severe kidney disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diabetes-mellitus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High lipid levels and high blood sugar (diabetes mellitus) frequently occur together. Although rosuvastatin was associated with higher rates of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39467290\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new-onset diabetes in some studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it may still be advised for people with diabetes or who are at risk for diabetes. The reason is that these patients have a high risk of heart disease, which statins can lower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"memory-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12885101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case reports of memory loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with statin use, including atorvastatin, have raised alarms. The concerns revolved around whether atorvastatin and other lipophilic statins could cause adverse effects on brain function. On the other hand, dementia risk seems to be lowered by using statins. Once again, the benefits of atorvastatin are generally felt to outweigh any neurologic risk in most cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin\u2019s metabolism via the liver\u2019s CYP3A4 enzyme puts it in conflict with more prescription drugs than rosuvastatin. Drug interactions can result in heightened or lessened effects of atorvastatin, and consequently, a patient could potentially experience more adverse effects from the statin or less cardiovascular benefit. Therapy with any statin runs a risk of drug interaction. If you\u2019re a patient taking statins, it is important for you to report an accurate list of all medications and supplements you\u2019re taking to your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"atorvastatin-side-effects-interactions-and-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin side effects, interactions, and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin and its brand-name counterpart Lipitor are generally well-tolerated without side effects for most patients. The list of atorvastatin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lipitor-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor\u2019s side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems less daunting when one realizes that the most common side effect described in the drug label, nasopharyngitis (cold symptoms), occurred in only about 8% of patients. Additional common side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain and muscle pain or spasms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and stomach upset<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=1daa6f20-a032-4541-939d-931f36a020dd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin\u2019s label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls attention to a few warnings that include muscle side effects, liver dysfunction, elevated blood sugar, and central nervous system problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As previously described, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/atorvastatin-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin can interact with numerous other drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014too many to be listed here.
