During the COVID-19 pandemic, broad immunization was key, so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided funding for free vaccines. But since then, the COVID-19 virus has evolved and new boosters have helped prevent different variants. Yet in 2023, federal funding ceased. That means people had to rely on their insurance plan for coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n

And while <\/span>COVID-19 vaccines<\/span> are still typically free for people who have health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, uninsured individuals may still pay around $250 for their booster. That price can vary based on the brand, pharmacy, location, and more. We\u2019ve outlined all the important details below.<\/span><\/p>\n

COVID-19 vaccine prices & coupons<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

How much does the COVID vaccine cost without insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Just like during the pandemic, multiple COVID-19 vaccines are still available, and the price may depend on which one you get. According to the CDC, there are three different brands on the market: Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, and Novavax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll COVID-19 vaccines currently available are highly effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death,\u201d says <\/span>Francesca Ceddia<\/span><\/a>, Chief Medical Affairs Officer at Moderna. But different pharmacies may only offer certain ones, so check with your pharmacy first if you\u2019re interested in a specific brand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moderna<\/span><\/h3>\n

Moderna\u2019s standard adult vaccine is called <\/span>Spikevax<\/span><\/a> and requires a single vaccine dose for adolescents and adults. \u201cSpikevax is approved for use in individuals aged 12 years and older and authorized for emergency use in children aged 6 months through 11 years,\u201d Ceddia says. \u201cModerna is also seeking regulatory approval for its next-generation COVID-19 vaccine, mRNA-1283, which is designed to provide enhanced protection, especially for older adults.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Spikevax is an <\/span>mRNA vaccine<\/span><\/a>, which means \u201cit works by <\/span>using messenger RNA (mRNA)<\/span><\/a> to instruct cells in the body to produce the spike protein found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus,\u201d Ceddia says. \u201cThis triggers an immune response, teaching the body to recognize and fight the virus if encountered in the future.\u201d <\/span>Spikevax\u2019s clinical trials<\/span><\/a> showed a 94.1% efficacy rate for combating COVID-19. This effectiveness may also decrease over time, although boosters can bolster it.<\/span><\/p>\n

For anyone paying entirely out of pocket for Spikevax<\/a>, the average cost is $374 per dose, while the version of Spikevax<\/a> for children ages 6 months through 11 years is $304 per dose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pfizer-BioNTech<\/span><\/h3>\n

Approved in 2021, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is called <\/span>Comirnaty<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s available to people ages 12 and up, and there are versions for children too, but the dosing schedule depends on the child\u2019s age. Children aged 6 months to 4 years need three doses, while children ages 5\u201311 years old only require one (unless they are moderately or severely immunocompromised).<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Spikevax, Comirnaty is an <\/span>mRNA vaccine<\/span><\/a>, and its initial clinical trials concluded that it\u2019s <\/span>95% effective against the virus that causes COVID-19<\/span><\/a>, although this effectiveness <\/span>may decrease over time<\/span><\/a>, which is why the company has introduced boosters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without insurance coverage, the price for Comirnaty<\/a> can reach $288 per 10 mL of 30 mcg\/0.3 mL dose. Its vaccines for children 5-11 years old<\/a> are somewhat cheaper: around $163 per 10 mL of 10 mcg\/0.3 mL dose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Novavax<\/span><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Novavax<\/span><\/a> COVID-19 vaccine was <\/span>approved in 2022<\/span><\/a>, slightly later than its two counterparts, and it\u2019s only approved for people ages 12 years and older – not children. It requires two doses: one dose 3-8 weeks after the first.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Novavax isn\u2019t an mRNA vaccine like Comirnaty or Spikevax. Rather, <\/span>it\u2019s a protein adjuvant<\/span><\/a>. So instead of telling the body\u2019s cells to create certain proteins, it contains certain COVID-19 proteins itself\u2014although it can\u2019t actually cause the disease. This triggers the immune system to create antibodies, essentially training it to fight the virus itself. <\/span>Novavax\u2019s Phase 3 clinical studies<\/span><\/a> showed an 89.7% efficacy rate against the COVID-19 virus and 100% effectiveness against moderate and severe illness from the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

While its mechanism of action is different from its competitors, Novavax\u2019s out-of-pocket price is fairly similar. On average, it costs $259 per 0.5 mL of 5 mcg\/0.5 mL dose.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

How much is the COVID-19 vaccine with insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n

COVID-19 vaccines \u201cshould be covered by any insurance that covers any other vaccine,\u201d says <\/span>Amy Edwards, MD, FAAP<\/span><\/a> assistant professor at the CWRU School of Medicine. \u201cIf your insurance covers you to get other vaccines they will cover this one too (think the yearly flu shot). If your insurance doesn\u2019t cover your yearly flu shot then they probably won\u2019t cover COVID either.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The amount of coverage you\u2019ll receive, however, can vary based on the insurance plan. Some plans, <\/span>Medicare plans<\/span><\/a>, might cover the full cost as long as your healthcare provider administers the shot. Yet other plans might only cover part of the cost. To know for sure, you\u2019ll need to check your specific insurance plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to get the COVID-19 vaccine without insurance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Not everyone has insurance, but the good news is that there are still ways to get COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at an affordable price, even without coverage. Here are a few.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Use a SingleCare discount card<\/span><\/h3>\n

After <\/span>signing up for free<\/span><\/a>, just present the card at a <\/span>participating pharmacy<\/span><\/a>, and they\u2019ll apply the savings.
