Ozempic is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist that is typically taken once a week by injection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, for breastfeeding mothers, safety is a top priority when considering any medication. If you&#8217;re nursing and wondering whether it\u2019s safe to take Ozempic while breastfeeding, you&#8217;re not alone. Right now, there isn\u2019t much research on the potential risks, but some studies have shown that it doesn\u2019t pass into breast milk. Because of the lack of data, it\u2019s best to reach out to your healthcare provider to discuss important considerations of your treatment plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ozempic-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Ozempic while breastfeeding?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no formal guidelines on whether or not it\u2019s safe to use Ozempic while breastfeeding. That\u2019s partly because the data on Ozempic and breastfeeding is very limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39275201\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of eight breastfeeding mothers taking this medication found there were \u201cno detectable levels of semaglutide in breast milk samples from mothers who are on Ozempic during lactation,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aeroflowbreastpumps.com\/blog\/authors\/dr.-jessica--madden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Madden, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pediatrician, neonatologist, and medical director at Aeroflow Breastpumps. This led the study researchers to conclude that the concentrations passing to infants were unlikely to cause any short-term harm. However, the long-term risk is unknown. It\u2019s also unclear how taking Ozempic might impact the nutrient content of breast milk or milk supply. \u201cMore studies are needed to determine compatibility further,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/demi-lucas-ibclc-pmh-c-794680204\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demi Lucas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an IBCLC with The Lactation Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oral semaglutide) does cross into breast milk and can be absorbed by babies\u2019 bodies; therefore, all oral formulations of semaglutide, both for weight loss and treatment of Type 2 diabetes, are contraindicated during breastfeeding,\u201d Dr. Madden explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always best to consult with your provider before taking Ozempic\u2014or any diabetes or weight loss drugs\u2014while breastfeeding. Some providers consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be breastfeeding-safe. Others will recommend alternative treatments that are proven safe, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-semaglutide-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of semaglutide while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a mother taking Ozempic while breastfeeding, you may experience some of the side effects common among people taking Ozempic. These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burping or belching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation at the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to side effects in infants, Dr. Madden expects that there wouldn\u2019t be any. \u201cSince Ozempic does not cross into breast milk, it should not cause side effects in breastfed infants or affect their health or development,\u201d she explains. And what about how it might impact the nutritional content of breast milk or your milk supply? \u201cAs far as we know,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/semaglutide-tablets-vs-injection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not impact the nutritional composition of breast milk or have an effect on milk supply,\u201d Dr. Madden says. However, there are some weight management considerations to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maintain adequate calorie intake. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can lose weight while breastfeeding, but it\u2019s important to do so carefully and while maintaining a healthy diet\u2014one that has enough calories to support you and your baby while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding moms typically need about 340 to 400 more calories than they did before pregnancy and lactation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/hcp\/diet-micronutrients\/maternal-diet.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Staying within that range is essential to maintain your health and milk supply. \u201cOzempic reduces hunger, which might lead to inadequate calorie intake,\u201d Lucas says<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Avoid rapid weight loss. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing weight too rapidly while breastfeeding isn\u2019t advised. For example, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/health\/pregnancy\/breastfeeding-and-formula\/losing-weight-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that breastfeeding moms lose weight gradually, at a rate of about one pound per week. According to Lucas, one concern about taking Ozempic while breastfeeding is that it can decrease your appetite and make you shed more weight than recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Eat a well-balanced <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/breastfeeding-diet\/\"><b>diet<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best way to nourish your body while breastfeeding is to eat nutrient-dense foods (foods rich in color, vitamins and minerals), increase protein and fat to feel satiated throughout the day and to increase whole grain carbohydrates,\u201d Ferguson says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI recommend that all breastfeeding mothers who desire to lose a substantial amount of weight work closely with a dietitian to make sure they have an appropriate intake of calories, vitamins, and minerals,\u201d says Dr. Madden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Set realistic expectations.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Remember that your body is in a different state than usual when you are lactating. \u201cThings such as hormonal factors (prolactin, estrogen, cortisol, and stress) which fluctuate during the postpartum period can impact weight loss,\u201d Lucas says. Additionally, your metabolism changes, as do your caloric and hydration needs, muscle mass, sleep patterns, and stress levels,\u201d says Lucas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there is limited data on the potential risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during breastfeeding, there is promising evidence that the medication doesn\u2019t pass into breast milk. Still, we don\u2019t know yet how Ozempic impacts babies long-term or whether it might impact breast milk composition or supply.
