Most recently in 2021, Wegovy was approved by the FDA for weight loss management. Semaglutide has many proven health benefits however it is not naive to side effects. According to medical experts, some people who use injectable semaglutide may experience burning and other symptoms at the injection site. Burning at the injection site can be prevented with the proper precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-burning-at-semaglutide-injection-site-normal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is burning at semaglutide injection site normal?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew J. Shapiro, MD, a board-certified general surgery specialist and the Medical Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Wellington Regional Medical Center in Wellington, Florida, explains that semaglutide injections can cause a burning sensation at the injection site. \u201cNot everyone experiences this side effect, but some people do report a mild to moderate burning or stinging sensation or discomfort after their injection,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaad.org\/article\/S0190-9622(24)00532-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of clinical trials found that out of 407 patients, 0.2% reported a skin-burning sensation when taking 2.4 milligrams (mg) of semaglutide injections every week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Shapiro adds that burning at the injection site is a normal side effect of this injectable medicine. \u201cIt is usually temporary and goes away after a few minutes,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site burn is one of many common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatulence (gas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of semaglutide injection site reactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the leading causes of injection site reactions:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"composition-of-the-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composition of the medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Shapiro, the chemical composition of semaglutide could cause an injection site reaction. \u201cSince it is not completely neutral in pH, it can cause irritation,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"injection-technique\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection technique<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you administer the medication could increase your chances of experiencing burning. \u201cTechnique matters immensely when it comes to injection\u2014too deep, too shallow or at the wrong angle, as well as injecting too quickly or moving the needle while it\u2019s in the skin can also cause discomfort,\u201d Dr. Shapiro says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"temperature-of-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature of medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unused semaglutide must be refrigerated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a618008.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and then can be stored at room temperature after its first use. Improper storage can significantly reduce the drug\u2019s effectiveness and potentially pose a safety risk. The injectable medication could degrade, leading to adverse reactions like burning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"alcohol-residue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol residue<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol swabs are used to prepare the skin for a semaglutide injection. However, according to Dr. Shapiro, if the skin is not completely dry, the preservatives in the alcohol swab can cause burning and irritation. [They can also result from] the direct toxicity of semaglutide, resulting in local skin necrosis or lobular panniculitis. Immunomodulation, which is the immune system&#8217;s response to the drug, can also result in inflammatory changes at the injection site.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. La Puma, the rarest injection site reactions linked to semaglutide are leukocytoclastic vasculitis and allodynia (skin tenderness). Leukocytoclastic vasculitis, or hypersensitivity vasculitis, is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aocd.org\/page\/LeukocytoclasticVas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation of small blood vessels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This condition can lead to skin rashes, fevers, malaise (general feeling of discomfort), weight loss, muscle pain or soreness, and joint pain. Allodynia is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/what-is-allodynia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of nerve pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that causes hypersensitivity to touch and other contact with skin that doesn\u2019t typically cause pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing severe side effects from injecting semaglutide, please seek immediate medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-semaglutide-injection-site-reactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat semaglutide injection site reactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice a reaction from the semaglutide at the injection site, here are some ways you can treat it and how you can prevent it in the future:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ensure-proper-injection-technique\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure proper injection technique\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorrect angle or depth could cause injection site reactions, so make sure you administer the medication properly. Dr. La Puma recommends injecting at a 90-degree angle (perpendicular to your skin). You also want to ensure you\u2019re not going too deep and injecting into your muscles or veins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allow-skin-to-dry-completely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow skin to dry completely\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid burning and ensure that you\u2019re receiving an adequate dose of semaglutide, ensure your skin is dry after using an alcohol swab before injecting the medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rotate-injection-sites\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotate injection sites<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can reduce your risk of adverse reactions by rotating injection sites with each injection. \u201cIf you\u2019re experiencing burning or irritation, try rotating the injection site to prevent irritation, switching between the abdomen, thighs, and upper arms,\u201d Dr. Shapiro says. If you do decide to inject in the same area, always use a different spot in that area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"use-cold-compress-and-topical-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use cold compress and topical treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve experienced an injection site reaction, you should contact your healthcare provider. However, if immediate relief is needed, Dr. La Puma recommends applying a cold compress, such as an ice pack, or a topical treatment like hydrocortisone cream to reduce pain, redness, swelling, and itching.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"take-over-the-counter-medications-to-relieve-pain-and-itchiness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and itchiness\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the injection has caused some pain, you can take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) for relief.
