Adults ages 65 and older were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11357-025-01772-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than younger adults to report these symptoms while taking atorvastatin. The increased risk is attributed to comorbidities and other medications they\u2019re taking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gait disturbances:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Muscle weakness can lead to abnormal walking patterns and foot shuffling, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fall-prevention-for-seniors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing the risk of falls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diabetes risk: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthpolicy.fsi.stanford.edu\/news\/lower-doses-statins-just-effective-older-adults-who-are-greater-risk-side-effects-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of new-onset diabetes increases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when adults 75 years and older take high doses of statins; however, the risk is small.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that older adults have been underrepresented in clinical trials. More large studies about the effects of statins in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease among adults 75 years and older are needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-atorvastatin-cause-weight-gain\/\"><b>Does atorvastatin cause weight gain?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of atorvastatin\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the medication\u2019s FDA label, you should stop taking atorvastatin and call your healthcare provider ASAP if any of the following symptoms appear:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions, like skin rashes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown or dark-colored urine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your skin and\/or the whites of your eyes become yellow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other concerning symptoms, especially if they get worse or don\u2019t go away<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-atorvastatin-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do atorvastatin side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults may quickly experience side effects of atorvastatin, especially in their muscles. \u201cMuscle side effects can occur with as few as one or two doses,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/yu-ming-ni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yu-Ming Ni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified cardiologist and lipidologist at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-atorvastatin-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do atorvastatin side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of atorvastatin are generally temporary, although they might last longer in older patients. \u201cMuscle aches are typically temporary, and I generally find that it takes about two to four weeks for the body to adjust to it,\u201d Dr. Ni says. \u201cIn most of my younger patients, two weeks is enough time. But perhaps an older patient may take longer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of atorvastatin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to atorvastatin, patients don\u2019t have to worry too much about long-term side effects. Dr. Ni says the major one is a slightly higher rate of onset of diabetes in people who have never had it, but again, the keyword is \u201cslightly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe risk is quite small, around 1-2% in a five-year period,\u201d he says. \u201cWe do not quite understand why this happens, but often the risks associated with needing a statin are greater.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put another way, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6047411\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 article in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Heart Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, statin treatment is \u201cremarkably safe,\u201d with the only risk being that around one in 1,000 patients will become exposed to new-onset diabetes mellitus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"statins-and-dementia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins and dementia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ni also wants to clear a wide misconception that statins cause dementia. \u201cWhile it is true that patients taking statins are more likely to have dementia, it is not because the statin is causing it,\u201d Dr. Ni says. \u201cRather, it is the kinds of people that might need to take a statin that are at risk for developing dementia.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible reasoning behind that, he says, could be a cholesterol plaque build-up in the arteries (such as those in the brain), a previous stroke, or taking statins for diabetes, all of which heighten the risk of dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"atorvastatin-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/atorvastatin-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strong inhibitors of CYP3A4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Combining atorvastatin and strong inhibitors of CYP3A4, an enzyme, can increase plasma concentrations of atorvastatin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grapefruit juice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This beverage contains components that can inhibit CYP3A4, so drinking it while on this medication can also increase plasma concentrations of atorvastatin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cyclosporine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: As mentioned, atorvastatin can cause myopathy (aka muscle aches or weakness). Combining higher doses of that with cyclosporine can increase the risk of myopathy and\/or rhabdomyolysis (muscle inflammation and breakdown).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rifampin or other inducers of cytochrome P450 3A4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Combining these two medications can reduce plasma concentrations of atorvastatin. Typically, it is recommended to take the medications together (versus delaying the atorvastatin).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Digoxin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: While patients taking any medication need professional monitoring, it\u2019s especially important for people taking atorvastatin and digoxin to have levels monitored closely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Atorvastatin should be used cautiously in patients who drink alcohol, specifically more than two glasses a day. Patients who have chronic alcoholic liver disease may be more likely to see increases in plasma concentrations of atorvastatin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coffee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Coffee (and other forms of caffeine) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lipitor-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may make atorvastatin less effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety measures while using atorvastatin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin is generally safe and one of the most prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications for high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, it is important to use it safely. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin can exacerbate other health conditions or symptoms. This is one of several reasons why it\u2019s important to discuss your health history with your healthcare provider before going on any new medication or supplement. For example, Dr. Ni says atorvastatin can be problematic if you have a serious liver condition or moderate kidney disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though atorvastatin is not habit-forming, and discontinuing it does not cause withdrawal symptoms, people can still overdose on the medication. Atorvastatin 80 mg is the maximum dose for the average patient, but Dr. Ni says healthcare providers may recommend lower doses if they have other medical conditions. \u201cIn the event of an overdose, immediately seek medical attention or call 911.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-considered-a-high-dose-of-atorvastatin\/\"><b>What is considered a high dose of atorvastatin?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-atorvastatin-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid atorvastatin side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding side effects of atorvastatin is as easy as following a few tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take atorvastatin exactly as prescribed. You can take it any time of day since it lasts for 24 hours. (The same can\u2019t be said for all other statins.) However, you should take it at the same time every day, with or without food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t take atorvastatin if you have liver problems or are allergic to the medication or any of its ingredients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report any adverse reactions to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-the-side-effects-of-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat the side effects of atorvastatin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain is the most commonly reported side effect of atorvastatin. Some people have found relief by also taking coenzyme Q 10, but it\u2019s not necessarily doctor-recommended. \u201cI have found that it is only occasionally effective, and I do not routinely recommend coenzyme Q 10 with a statin,\u201d Dr. Ni says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s crucial to pay attention to other side effects that may pop up, too, like a change in the color of your urine. Dark-colored urine can come from rhabdomyolysis, Dr. Ni says, which is a muscle injury where your muscles break down, and it\u2019s a very serious condition requiring immediate medical attention. Thankfully, it\u2019s pretty rare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-is-atorvastatin-safe-for-older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Is atorvastatin safe for older adults?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, healthcare providers say atorvastatin is safe for older adults to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeveral studies have evaluated the use of statins in adults ages 75 and older, and have generally found them to be safe despite a higher risk of muscle-related side effects,\u201d Dr. Paz says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, older adults should be cautious if they have certain medical conditions, such as liver problems.
