She emphasizes that your diet is important even when you\u2019re not taking this medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain foods can cause blood sugar spikes, making it challenging for Victoza to control blood glucose levels. To improve your body\u2019s response to sugar and support your cardiovascular and metabolic health, consider avoiding the following foods on Victoza.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-ultra-processed-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Eating out regularly can have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/heres-how-fast-food-can-affect-your-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative health effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as contributing to weight gain, spiked blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol\u2014the very effects Victoza works to counteract.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More research is needed on the possible risks of drinking alcohol while taking Victoza, but we do know that heavy alcohol consumption can have negative overall health effects. For example, alcoholic drinks are classified as carcinogens, meaning they may increase the risk of certain cancers. When consumed in excessive amounts, they also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35333364\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000968.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some diabetes medications because it can cause low or high blood sugar. For example, if you also take medication for diabetes, such as sulfonylureas or insulin, alcohol can increase the risk of severely low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Because alcohol is high in calories, heavy drinking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33998940\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been linked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to an increased risk of obesity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking Victoza, drinking alcohol isn\u2019t off limits, but its effects counter that of the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-eat-while-taking-victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you eat while taking Victoza?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideal diet on Victoza is one that\u2019s rich in diverse nutrients. \u201cFocus on eating the rainbow\u2014your plate should be colorful with a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins,\u201d Dr. Rao explains. These foods help keep you fuller for longer, which can assist with weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting enough protein is important while taking GLP-1 receptor agonists like Victoza. \u201cPeople on Victoza should aim to include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-protein-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protein-rich foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at every meal and snack,\u201d says Dr. Mittal. \u201cThis can be animal-based lean meats, low-fat dairy products, or plant-based protein sources like beans, lentils, and tofu.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important nutrient to prioritize on Victoza is dietary fiber, which is found in plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes. \u201cFiber is not only good for maintaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-foods-lower-blood-sugar-immediately\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also helpful for cardiovascular and gut health,\u201d says Dr. Mittal. \u201cMedications like Victoza can slow down gut function, so it\u2019s important to get enough fiber\u2014and drink plenty of water\u2014to prevent constipation and keep the gut moving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also avoid overeating. \u201cIf eating beyond fullness, one can experience nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain on this medication,\u201d explains Dr. Mittal. According to clinical trials, overeating can also hinder the weight loss benefits of Victoza. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7171937\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2020 trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants taking liraglutide followed a calorie-controlled diet, which led to improved blood sugar control and weight management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gastrointestinal-side-effects-of-victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal side effects of Victoza<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many prescription drugs, Victoza may cause some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/victoza-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you think you\u2019re experiencing troublesome side effects from taking Victoza, it\u2019s a good idea to inform a healthcare provider. However, milder GI symptoms tend to subside with time as your body adjusts to the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza may also cause some serious side effects. \u201cLess common side effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, and thyroid tumors,\u201d Dr. Rao says.
