And it doesn\u2019t appear that one will hit the market anytime soon, since Nurtec\u2019s manufacturer, Pfizer, has a patent on the drug until 2039.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t expect to see a generic on pharmacy shelves the day after the patent expires, either. According to a Canadian study, the average time to develop a generic drug after the brand-name patent has expired is about 1.5 years. That average might be slightly different in the U.S., but those waiting for a Nurtec generic might wait until 2040 or later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-differences-between-generic-vs-brand-name-nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the differences between generic vs. brand-name Nurtec?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when a generic version of rimegepant hits the market, some might wonder if it\u2019s actually a viable alternative to brand-name Nurtec ODT. The answer is yes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/generic-drugs\/overview-basics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration requires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that all generics be virtually identical to their reference products. That means they must have the same:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active ingredient<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage form (tablet, capsule, liquid, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administration route (oral, topical, injection, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, generic drugs must work the same way in the body. \u201cDuring a migraine, CGRP levels rise, causing blood vessels in the brain to widen and triggering inflammation and pain,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/james-lyons-755129340\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. James Lyons, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical consultant at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/synergyhouses.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synergy Houses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBy stopping CGRP from binding to its receptors, Nurtec helps reduce these effects, easing migraine symptoms and even preventing future attacks when taken regularly.\u201d An approved generic would function similarly and be available in the same format, currently a 75 mg orally disintegrating tablet taken as needed or every other day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are generics as effective? Research suggests that they are. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6415809\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study from 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared brand-name and generic drugs for several chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, and mental health conditions, and found that they performed virtually the same. Likewise, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/eci.12326\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study on antihypertensive drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that generics match brand-name drugs in preventing cardiovascular disease, with regard to safety and efficacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrand-name and generic drugs should be equally efficacious because they share the same active ingredient to treat the indicated condition,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\/directory\/tiffany-khieu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tiffany Khieu, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharm.D., an assistant professor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ketchum.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshall B. Ketchum University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf differences do exist, it is seen in the excipients, also known as the non-active ingredients,\u201d such as dyes, fillers, or coating agents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major difference between them isn\u2019t in the biochemistry, active ingredient, administration, or dosage, but in the price. They\u2019re totally legal, and many prescription drugs have a few specific uses that aren\u2019t listed on the label. \u201cThe majority of data available is on the prevention of migraines and treatment of acute migraines,\u201d Dr. Khieu says. So Nurtec\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9ef08e09-1098-35cc-e053-2a95a90a3e1d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only FDA approvals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are for the acute treatment of migraine headaches (with or without aura) and the preventative treatment of migraine episodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever, some doctors may use it off-label for other headache disorders, like cluster headaches or post-concussion headaches,\u201d and \u201cresearch is still ongoing into whether CGRP inhibitors like Nurtec could be helpful for other neurological conditions,\u201d Dr. Lyons says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-nurtec-covered-by-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Nurtec covered by insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurtec ODT is often covered by commercial insurance plans, as well as some Medicare and Medicaid plans. Nurtec\u2019s website says that 96% of people with commercial health insurance received coverage for the drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a relatively newer brand-name drug, Nurtec may be on a higher tier in formularies. That means it may not be a preferred drug and may cost more than other medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Nurtec is covered, you may still be responsible for a copay or coinsurance amount. If you haven\u2019t met your deductible, you may have to pay the full retail cost of the drug. Insurance coverage will ultimately vary by plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-you-get-nurtec-covered-by-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you get Nurtec covered by insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many insurance plans require prior authorization to cover Nurtec. Your healthcare provider will have to submit documentation about your medical history and why Nurtec is medically necessary before insurance covers it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, insurance plans may require step therapy. In other words, they\u2019ll require you to try and fail other migraine treatments before approving Nurtec. It\u2019s best to consult your health insurance provider to see why coverage has been denied. That way, you can avoid potential drug interactions and move to a medicine that\u2019s well-suited to your condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-use-of-nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term use of Nurtec<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While each migraine headache might only last for a couple of hours or days, they can recur over weeks and months, so Nurtec can be a long-term treatment. Fortunately, \u201cNurtec is generally safe for long-term use and does not cause medication-overuse headaches, which can be an issue with some migraine treatments,\u201d Dr. Lyons says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those benefits are well documented in clinical studies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11102748\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 52-week study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 1,800 patients treated with rimegepant found that the patients\u2019 use of analgesics or antiemetics for migraine treatment decreased over time. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurologylive.com\/view\/acute-long-term-needed-rimegepant-reduces-monthly-migraine-days\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Nurtec ODT showed that almost 79% of patients treated with the drug over a full year reported at least a 30% reduction in monthly migraine days, while around 63% reported at least a 50% reduction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, the use of Nurtec ODT has relatively few adverse effects, even for long-term use. The most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nurtec-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Nurtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nausea, abdominal pain, and indigestion, and these possible side effects don\u2019t have any long-term consequences. The drug didn\u2019t show any serious side effects in clinical trials, though it may cause allergic reactions such as rashes and trouble breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"expert-takeaway\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expert takeaway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Nurtec is an effective option for migraines, its cost can be hard to overcome for many people.
