That shouldn\u2019t create a problem, doctors say. \u201cLinzess has been very available to my patients, [in terms of insurance coverage]\u201d Dr. Khapra says. More good news: The generic version may be coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccording to my research, pursuant to the terms of a settlement, Ironwood and Allergan will grant Teva a license to market its 145 mcg and 290 mcg version of Linzess in the United States beginning March 31, 2029,\u201d says Dr. David Clarke, MD, a doctor who\u2019s board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and the president of the Association for Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, Linzess (and Constella) are the intellectual property and trademarks of Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, so their \u201cpermission\u201d is needed to make a generic version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The generic may be referred to by Linzess\u2019s active ingredient: linaclotide. Linzess contains linaclotide-coated beads in hard gelatin capsules. It belongs to the guanylate cyclase-C agonist (GC-C) drug class. This class of medications is known for treating chronic constipation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-differences-between-generic-vs-brand-name-linzess\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the differences between generic vs. brand-name Linzess?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brand-name version (and eventual generic version) of this prescription drug is largely the same, so you\u2019d experience similar therapeutic effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s worth noting that brand-name drugs\u2014while more expensive\u2014may at times lead to more positive results than generic drugs, according to some studies. That\u2019s one reason people may opt for the brand name even when the generic comes out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research backs up the benefits of brand-name medications. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8061123\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that brand-name antidepressants outperform their generic counterparts, at least when it comes to preventing hospitalization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/circoutcomes.117.004158\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that patients who took generic versions of blood pressure medications experienced increased rates of side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether that goes for any given drug is unclear, but per usual, the best bet is to talk through options with a prescribing doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linzess is taken by mouth and comes in white, cream, or gray capsules. As for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/linzess\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Linzess comes in 72 mcg, 145 mcg, or 290 mcg capsules, depending on the patient\u2019s age and condition (see the chart below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-generic-linzess-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does generic Linzess cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linzess is only available as a brand-name drug, which means that it can come with higher prices than generic medications. For a 30-day supply of 145 mcg capsules of Linzess without insurance, the average cost is around $718.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost will depend on factors such as insurance coverage, dosage, and the quantity prescribed. In addition, the pharmacy and location can influence costs. Without insurance, the cost of Linzess could be reduced with a prescription discount card. (When there\u2019s an intestinal obstruction in the GI tract, a constipation medication could worsen the issue.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients have also misused linaclotide, particularly those who want to lose weight or have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eating-disorder-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are using the medication as a laxative. \u201cHowever, this use is not recommended, and [Linzess] is considered contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or mechanical bowel obstruction (MBO),\u201d Dr. Clarke says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-insurance-cover-linzess\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does insurance cover Linzess?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linzess is often covered by commercial insurance and Medicare prescription drug plans. However, actual coverage may vary from plan to plan. In addition, having insurance coverage doesn\u2019t mean the drug is more affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if Linzess is covered by insurance, you may be responsible for a copay or coinsurance amount. Whether you\u2019ve met your plan\u2019s deductible can also play into the cost you\u2019ll pay at the pharmacy. Still, you\u2019ll want to consult a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment based on your overall condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-switch-from-linzess-to-linaclotide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to switch from Linzess to linaclotide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linzess-treated patients may want to switch to the generic when it becomes available. Thankfully, it should be easy to do so safely. Patients don\u2019t need to worry about tapering or withdrawal effects with Linzess (though stopping it abruptly may lead to the return of constipation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen switching, there is no need to do anything different,\u201d Dr. Khapra says. \u201cYou can stop Linzess one day and start the linaclotide the following day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because the two medications are identical, Dr. Clarke says. If you miss a dose, just skip it and take your next dose at the regular time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other good-to-know information from these gastroenterology doctors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t usually a specific need or medical condition in which a provider would want a patient to take a brand-name over a generic. At the same time, a clinician may prefer prescribing a brand-name drug because of its \u201cestablished efficacy and safety profile documented in clinical trials,\u201d as well as the fact that brand-name medications \u201coften come with patient support programs,\u201d according to Dr. Clarke.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the prescription says \u201cbrand medically necessary,\u201d the pharmacist must give the brand name. Otherwise, they can switch to the generic if the generic is available. It just depends on state laws and insurance policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a patient doesn\u2019t keep up with the daily dosage or there\u2019s a shortage, they won\u2019t experience any withdrawal symptoms, per se; however, constipation will quickly return. But again, that\u2019s a resumption of previous symptoms, not \u201cwithdrawal.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-use-of-linzess\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term use of Linzess\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linzess can be taken long-term. \u201cLinzess is designed for long-term use, provided it remains effective and well-tolerated by the patient,\u201d Dr. Clarke says. \u201cThere is no evidence of diminished response over time, making it suitable for extended treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some long-term side effects people may face, he adds, include diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
