{"id":631967,"date":"2025-04-16T12:16:31","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=631967"},"modified":"2025-04-16T12:18:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:18:04","slug":"gabapentin-side-effects-in-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-side-effects-in-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Gabapentin side effects in women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication that\u2019s approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat seizures as well as nerve pain that can result after a shingles infection (postherpetic neuralgia) or after years of diabetes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sold under the brand names Neurontin and Gralise. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-label uses for gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include the treatment of nerve pain, tremors, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, alcohol dependence, and hot flashes in perimenopausal or menopausal women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While side effects of gabapentin in women are similar to those experienced by men, hormonal variations and metabolism may cause some differences. We\u2019ll take a closer look at the specific side effects to watch for, how gabapentin impacts pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause, and how you can minimize any unwanted side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-common-gabapentin-side-effects-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are common gabapentin side effects in women?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone who takes gabapentin will experience significant side effects, and most people don\u2019t notice many side effects at all. But there are several potential side effects to be aware of. The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of gabapentin are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the arms and legs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncontrolled eye movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI upset (diarrhea, constipation, nausea, or vomiting)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of coordination and injuries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble thinking clearly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred or double vision<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time, we don\u2019t know much about how the common side effects of gabapentin are different in women versus in men. \u201cThere is no substantial evidence to suggest that the side effects of gabapentin are significantly different in women,\u201d says Soma Mandal, MD, an internist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/doctors\/soma-mandal-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, she says hormonal differences and variations in body composition can influence drug metabolism for women, meaning that side effects may impact women differently at times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doctorej.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eboni January, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), agrees that gabapentin can have different side effects in women than in men due to \u201cfactors such as hormonal fluctuations, metabolism, and body composition differences.\u201d According to Dr. January, the gabapentin side effects more commonly found in women include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peripheral edema (swelling of the legs and feet)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"does-gabapentin-cause-weight-gain-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does gabapentin cause weight gain in women?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.keciagaither.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kecia Gaither,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, MPH, double board-certified in obstetrics\/gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, says that women may be more likely to experience weight gain than men. Dr. Gaither also notes that women might be more likely than men to experience mood swings while taking gabapentin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note the potential for gabapentin sexual side effects. Although it\u2019s not clear whether the sexual side effects of gabapentin are greater for women, certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-and-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual side effects can occur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in either sex. These include decreased sexual desire and trouble climaxing or achieving orgasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of gabapentin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, gabapentin can cause serious side effects which can be life-threatening. If you experience any of the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/neurontin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should seek urgent medical attention:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant feelings of depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual moods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atypical behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thoughts of hurting yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of a serious allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, such as swelling, hives, skin rash, vomiting, wheezing, losing consciousness, and breathing problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. January says that depression, anxiety, and other mood changes may impact women more than men, especially if gabapentin is combined with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cns-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system (CNS) depressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like alcohol. \u201cWomen also seem to experience higher rates of weight gain and fluid retention, which can be particularly concerning for those with underlying cardiovascular conditions,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, if you are experiencing any of these adverse side effects\u2014including the ones more likely to impact women, like serious mood changes and fluid retention\u2014please reach out to your healthcare provider for medical attention right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-and-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Mandal notes, gabapentin is classified as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Category C drug by the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for use during pregnancy. This means that risk to a fetus can\u2019t be fully ruled out. \u201cAnimal studies have shown some risk but controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking,\u201d Dr. Mandal says, noting that gabapentin can cross the placenta. Still, its effects on the development of the fetus are not well understood as of now. Most physicians believe that when considering giving a pregnant person a Category C medication the risk of not giving the medication needs to be compared to the possible risk to the fetus. If there are safer medication or treatment options for pregnant patients, this is often the treatment of choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, there doesn\u2019t seem to be an elevated risk of fetal birth defects among mothers who took gabapentin in early pregnancy. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK582723\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an elevated risk of heart defects in babies whose mothers filled two or more prescriptions for gabapentin in early pregnancy. Still, the study didn\u2019t track whether the mother actually took the medication, so it\u2019s not clear whether the gabapentin is what caused these birth defects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the miscarriage risk, Dr. Gaither says that there is limited data on whether it\u2019s affected by gabapentin, \u201cso professional medical advice is recommended for individual cases.\u201d Additionally, she says that although current evidence does not strongly indicate that gabapentin affects fertility directly, it&#8217;s best to discuss the pros and cons of taking gabapentin during pregnancy with your healthcare provider and not to stop taking gabapentin suddenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf used for seizure control, stopping gabapentin abruptly can be dangerous,\u201d says Dr. January. \u201cHowever, if used for pain management, anxiety, or other off-label uses, alternative medications may be considered before conception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your healthcare provider determines that the risks of taking gabapentin during pregnancy outweigh the benefits, they may offer you alternative medication to take. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy-safe alternatives to gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/keppra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keppra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/elepsia-xr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elepsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levetiracetam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levetiracetam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lamictal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lacmital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lamotrigine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamotrigine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trileptal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trileptal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxcarbazepine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxcarbazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-while-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin while breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501224\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin doesn\u2019t appear to negatively impact breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although gabapentin does pass into breast milk, it does so in very small amounts. Moreover, there aren\u2019t reports of it having negative side effects on breastfeeding babies, nor does it seem to impact breastfeeding initiation if taken close to birth. There are also no reports of gabapentin lowering milk supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the research about gabapentin and breastfeeding isn\u2019t very robust, so while it\u2019s considered safe in most circumstances, you should keep an eye on your baby when you first start breastfeeding them if you take gabapentin. \u201cIf gabapentin is necessary during breastfeeding, it is generally safe, but monitoring for excessive infant sedation or poor feeding is advised,\u201d Dr. January says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-for-menopause\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin for menopause<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/menopause-questions-and-answers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the years leading up to it (perimenopause) can cause significant unpleasant symptoms for many women. These include hot flashes, sleep disruptions, mood swings, vaginal dryness, frequent urinary tract infections, irregular periods, and weight gain. Some women even experience an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8385721\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in ADHD symptoms.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some evidence that gabapentin can treat some of those symptoms. \u201cGabapentin may be used off-label to treat menopausal symptoms, particularly vasomotor symptoms or associated mood disorders,\u201d Dr. Gaither says. The research on gabapentin and menopause is mainly on its ability to help with the vasomotor motor symptoms of menopause, more commonly referred to as hot flashes and night sweats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As helpful as gabapentin can be for menopausal women, Dr. Gaither notes that gabapentin isn\u2019t the primary way that menopause is treated. \u201cIt is not a first-line treatment, and women are advised to discuss [treatment options] with their healthcare provider,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-gabapentin-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid gabapentin side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be helpful to have some strategies for avoiding some of the possible unpleasant side effects of gabapentin. Dr. January shared her top tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start low, beginning with a low dose and gradually increasing the dose to reduce dizziness and sleepiness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If gabapentin causes drowsiness, consider taking it near bedtime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware that, the morning after taking gabapentin, you may still feel drowsy when you would like to be alert.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants, as these can worsen drowsiness and dizziness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor yourself for mood changes. Reach out to your provider if you experience worsening depression or anxiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay hydrated and active to reduce fluid retention and weight gain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If stopping gabapentin, taper off gradually since sudden discontinuation may lead to withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and increased pain sensitivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-interactions-to-be-aware-of\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin interactions to be aware of<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking gabapentin, it\u2019s important to be aware of the correct dosing and what medication interactions to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard and maximum doses for gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adult standard dose: 300 to 600 mg taken three times daily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adult maximum dosage: 1,200 mg taken three times daily, not to exceed 3,600 mg per day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin drug interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of. Importantly, gabapentin should not be taken with opioids or CNS depressions, such as alcohol. Antacids may make gabapentin less effective. Although there are no foods to avoid while taking gabapentin, you should ask a healthcare professional about caffeine and cannabis intake, as these may negatively impact the effectiveness of gabapentin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about medications typically taken by women?
