It was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 to help people with Type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-use-ozempic-pen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable drug&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> popularity soared when it was discovered that weight loss was an added bonus. Eventually, the FDA also approved another form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically for weight management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest KFF Health Tracking Poll, about 12% of the adult population has taken a GLP-1, like Ozempic or Wegovy. It\u2019s become important to ask if these medications interact with antidepressants\u2014since the rate of antidepressant use is also on the rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ozempic-with-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Ozempic with antidepressants?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is generally safe to take both antidepressants and a GLP-1 medication,\u201d says Asha Shajahan, MD, a primary care provider with Corewell Health in Rosewell, Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaid Fadul, MD,\u00a0 a family practice provider and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bespokeconciergemd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bespoke Concierge MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Scottsdale, Arizona, agrees that it should be safe to take both meds at the same time. \u201cBut this combination does require careful monitoring,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That may be reassuring, especially to people with diabetes, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/living-with\/mental-health.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression occurs more often in people with diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in people without diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-antidepressants-affect-the-weight-loss-effects-of-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do antidepressants affect the weight-loss effects of Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants may affect the weight loss potential of GLP-1 drugs, but it may depend on your dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9420918\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retrospective study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that antidepressants can reduce the weight-loss effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists. However, a more recent study in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/oby.23946\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a 2.4 mg dose of semaglutide still causes meaningful weight loss in people with obesity who are taking antidepressants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highest weekly dose of Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes is 2 mg. Since a higher dose\u2014the dose given with Wegovy\u2014was tested in the study, it\u2019s possible that people on lower-dose Ozempic may experience reduced weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-expect-when-taking-both-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to expect when taking both medications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All medications have some potential side effects. If you\u2019re taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects-in-females\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you could potentially experience gastrointestinal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/how-to-take\/side-effects.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Most side effects lessen with time as your body adjusts to the medication. Less common but more serious are side effects such as pancreatitis, hypoglycemia, changes in vision, and dehydration that can lead to kidney problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants also can cause side effects, although they can vary, depending on which specific medication you\u2019re taking. Some antidepressants can even cause weight gain. For example, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M23-2742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Lexapro (escitalopram), Paxil (paroxetine), and Cymbalta (duloxetine) were associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/ssri-weight-gain-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a higher risk of weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than some other antidepressants. Meanwhile, Wellbutrin (bupropion) was associated with a reduced risk of weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking both medications, some side effects could be worse. \u201cWhile clinical studies have not found significant interactions between these medications, potential side effects from either drug can overlap,\u201d Dr. Fadul says. \u201cFor instance, both semaglutide and some antidepressants (particularly SSRIs or SNRIs) can cause gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or diarrhea, which may intensify when taken together.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our mental health newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Mental Health Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"glp-1s-and-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1s and depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts continue to explore the potential effect that taking a medication like semaglutide could have on your mental health. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/210608\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that obesity and depression have a bidirectional relationship. That means that obesity may contribute to depression, and depression may contribute to obesity. How GLP-1s\u2014such as Novo Nordisk\u2019s Ozempic and Wegovy or Lilly\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/zepbound-tirzepatide-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide)\u2014 factor into the mix is still under examination. Some research shows they increase depression risk, while other studies show they alleviate depression symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dom-pubs.pericles-prod.literatumonline.com\/doi\/10.1111\/dom.15616\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">results of a recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that many people who take GLP-1 drugs are at higher risk of receiving a prescription for an antidepressant. The association wasn\u2019t specific to any one particular antidepressant, although the researchers did note that it seemed stronger for Cymbalta (duloxetine). However, the research is preliminary, and an antidepressant prescription isn\u2019t the equivalent of having a depressive disorder. Antidepressants can be prescribed for other purposes, including anxiety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajgponline.org\/article\/%20S1064-7481(23)00394-9\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that GLP-1s may actually be helpful for reducing symptoms of depression in adults. However, they were comparing exenatide and liraglutide to placebo and other diabetes medications that lower glucose levels. More research is needed, including more research about newer GLP-1s, such as Ozempic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would reassure the patient that current evidence does not support a strong causal link between GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide and depression or anxiety,\u201d says Dr. Fadul. \u201cWhile there have been isolated reports of mood changes or depressive symptoms in some individuals, these cases are rare and often involve patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions.\u201d So far, the existing studies don\u2019t find a significant increase in psychiatric adverse events compared to placebo. However, you should always communicate openly with your healthcare team if you experience any mood changes after starting a new medication, like Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking an antidepressant, don\u2019t stop taking it unless you\u2019re instructed to by your provider. \u201cAbruptly stopping an antidepressant can cause withdrawal symptoms such as worsening anxiety, depression, and mood swings,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/providers.corewellhealth.org\/provider\/asha-p-shajahan\/3185849\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shajahan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic#what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has helped a growing number of people manage their diabetes and shed some excess weight, which also helps with their diabetes management. While researchers are still exploring how taking a medication like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cheapest-semaglutide-injection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may affect various mental health conditions, it does seem to be safe to take both Ozempic and an antidepressant at the same time.
