In fact, it\u2019s kind of a jack-of-all-trades drug, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat epilepsy, postherpetic neuralgia, and restless leg syndrome. It\u2019s also prescribed off-label for other types of nerve pain, diabetic neuropathy, mood disorders, and alcohol use disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin may cause certain side effects, and some may occur solely in men.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-gabapentin-side-effects-in-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common gabapentin side effects in men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) that helps calm certain overactive neurons. \u201cThe pharmacokinetics of gabapentin are similar between males and females, but the effective dose requirement is lower in females than in males,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/lexingtonclinic.com\/doctors\/brandon-gish-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandon Gish, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lexingtonclinic.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexington Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere is no evidence for variance in efficacy between genders, but side effects tend to be more frequent in females, likely owing to the dosing differences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4894771\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research backs up the idea<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that women are actually more likely to experience gabapentin\u2019s adverse effects than men. Those side effects, however, are largely similar. According to clinical trials, the most common adverse reactions for people who took gabapentin for epilepsy were sleepiness, dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance and coordination), fatigue, and involuntary eye movements. Other common side effects of gabapentin may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the extremities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accidental injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision or double vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazy eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual side effects are possible in both men and women, including decreased libido, difficulty reaching orgasm, erectile dysfunction (ED), and difficulty with ejaculation. That said, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajog.org\/article\/S0002-9378(18)30905-0\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that gabapentin might actually improve sexual function in women with vulvodynia (chronic pain in the vulva). Research hasn\u2019t found sexual improvement to occur in men who take gabapentin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-gabapentin-cause-erectile-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does gabapentin cause erectile dysfunction?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is important to be aware that gabapentin can indeed cause sexual side effects, including erectile dysfunction, in some patients,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/doctorhal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haleem Mohammed, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a franchise administrator of<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamedaymenshealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gameday Men\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAlthough these side effects are not among the most frequently reported, they can occur and may impact a patient&#8217;s quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erectile dysfunction isn\u2019t listed as a potential side effect on the Neurontin label, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1525505011002289\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study from 2011<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> links gabapentin to sexual dysfunction, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2050116122000587\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2022 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System found over 130 cases of gabapentin-induced erectile dysfunction over 10 years. It doesn\u2019t require immediate medical attention, but it\u2019s important to communicate any side effects to a healthcare provider so they can address them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of gabapentin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, gabapentin might also cause serious side effects, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions (symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing problems (respiratory depression)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal (if the medicine is stopped too quickly)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone experiencing one or more of these serious problems should get emergency medical help right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-gabapentin-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do gabapentin side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone responds differently to gabapentin, so how soon side effects begin can vary, and some people might not experience any. That said, side effects can appear shortly after taking the first dose of gabapentin. Many neurological medications require time for the brain and body to adjust, so even though some patients might experience side effects right away, they may subside after several days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-gabapentin-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do gabapentin side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, it\u2019s different for each person, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/neurontin-gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Poison Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gabapentin\u2019s side effects can last anywhere from several days to a few weeks. This can depend on factors such as the dose, the condition it\u2019s treating, the patient\u2019s other conditions and medications, or the patient\u2019s lifestyle. \u201cWhen starting gabapentin, it is best to start with the lowest dose and titrate slowly upward to effect, being observant of any side effects as they often present initially and can diminish after several weeks of treatment,\u201d Dr. Gish says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of gabapentin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most prevalent long-term side effect of gabapentin is its risk of addiction and abuse. It\u2019s not federally classified as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/schedules\/orangebook\/c_cs_alpha.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Drug Enforcement Administration, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-gabapentin-a-controlled-substance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some states consider it to be one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s less addictive than opioids, which is why it\u2019s often used as an alternative for pain management, but<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40265-020-01432-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gabapentin misuse is a growing and dangerous trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case studies have reported gabapentin dependence and withdrawal, which often leads to misuse. But when someone uses gabapentin in ways other than it\u2019s prescribed for, it leads to an increased risk of side effects. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1060028015620800?journalCode=aopd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the rate of gabapentin misuse in the general population was 1.1%, but in drug abuse treatment centers, it was 22%\u2014so it\u2019s important to speak with your healthcare provider about any prior substance abuse issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment-of-gabapentin-ed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment of gabapentin ED<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, the best treatment to combat this side effect is to reduce the dose or discontinue the drug altogether under medical supervision,\u201d Dr. Gish says. \u201cAlternatively, one could wait until after sexual activity before taking the medication, but if multiple doses are taken throughout the day, this may prove unsuccessful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers make this determination on a case-by-case basis. \u201cWe take a comprehensive approach to evaluating potential medication-related ED. This involves assessing the patient&#8217;s overall health, reviewing all current medications, and considering other possible contributing factors such as underlying health conditions or psychological influences,\u201d Dr. Mohammed says. \u201cIf gabapentin is suspected to be a contributing factor to ED, we may explore alternative treatment options or adjust the dosage. We also consider the use of ED medications for short-term management while the patient is on medications that can cause ED.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-gabapentin-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid gabapentin side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to deal with side effects is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Unfortunately, some side effects are unavoidable, but there are certain steps you can take to make them less likely. Here are a few:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Talk to your healthcare provider: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking gabapentin, consult a healthcare professional for medical advice on potential side effects and how to avoid them. You should also tell them about any other prescription drugs, supplements, or over-the-counter medications you\u2019re taking, since they may interfere with gabapentin or worsen side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Follow the dosing instructions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might be eager to feel better, but taking more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the prescribed dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases the risk of side effects. Healthcare providers sometimes prescribe the lowest dose to start and slowly increase it to help the patient adjust to their new medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drink plenty of water: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is good advice for your overall health, but also for preventing gabapentin side effects. Dry mouth and mild dehydration are both possible reactions, and drinking water can prevent or mitigate them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take it with food: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since some of gabapentin\u2019s side effects are gastrointestinal, taking it with a meal might help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid alcohol: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking alcohol can cause central nervous system side effects like dizziness and drowsiness, which might compound gabapentin\u2019s effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take it every day: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you forget to take gabapentin\u2014especially if it\u2019s for a few days in a row\u2014withdrawal symptoms can kick in. But don\u2019t take a double dose if you forget. Instead, just take the next dose as soon as you remember.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t go cold turkey: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping gabapentin abruptly can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/neurontin-abuse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like anxiety, agitation, insomnia, fatigue, restlessness, irritability, dizziness, headache, sweating, nausea, and more. Follow your healthcare provider\u2019s instructions to taper off gabapentin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-is-gabapentin-safe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Is gabapentin safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, the use of gabapentin is safe when it\u2019s taken according to the prescribing healthcare provider\u2019s exact instructions. But even safe prescription drugs can cause side effects, and for men, some of those gabapentin side effects might include sexual dysfunction. The good news is that those reactions are relatively uncommon, and even when they occur, there are ways to treat them.
