This is why men are more likely to have a \u201cgut\u201d or \u201cbeer belly\u201d than women (before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to experience small weight fluctuations from day to day and week to week, but sustained <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may present additional health issues or come with other symptoms. These symptoms can include fatigue, lethargy, bloating\/swelling, shortness of breath, constipation, and vision issues. Men may also experience some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues, like depression or discouragement about their appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-weight-gain-in-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in men?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in men isn\u2019t always as simple as it might seem. It can often stem from a combination of factors, including lifestyle choices, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medications, and more. Understanding the underlying cause is the first step to losing some unwanted weight. Here are several of the most common causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eating-habits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating habits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people are familiar with at least one fad diet for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They aren\u2019t always solid options, but there\u2019s a layer of truth beneath their claims\u2014what we eat can play a significant role in weight management. According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/382\/bmj-2022-073939\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increased consumption of processed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbohydrates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like sugars, starches, and refined grains was associated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while eating more whole grains and non-starchy vegetables was not. So limiting sugars and highly processed, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-calorie foods<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while maintaining a well-balanced diet can help avoid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or shed some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extra pounds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9778889\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 2022 study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concluded that among people with diabetes, men were more likely than women to engage in unhealthy diets, smoking, and alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lack-of-physical-activity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical activity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is exercise good for the heart, muscles, immune system, mind, and general <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s also often essential to maintain a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10980870\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a 2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that prolonged daily sitting was associated with higher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body fat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentages. Conversely,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2828487\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other research has shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that as little as 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per week can result in modest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In comparison, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week can achieve more significant results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s from a fast-approaching deadline, car troubles, or world events, we\u2019ve all experienced stress. And while temporary stress won\u2019t skyrocket <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body fat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chronic stress can be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress hormones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cortisol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trigger the body\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/stress-and-weight-gain\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight-or-flight response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, slowing down any functions not absolutely necessary for survival. Not everyone will experience it, but some might. These drugs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antidepressants<\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/managing-weight-gain-from-psychiatric-medications-202207182781\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs can increase appetite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M23-2742\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that popular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Prozac and Lexapro can lead to some measure of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Corticosteroids:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prednisone and other corticosteroids can alter how the body stores fat, fluids, and other nutrients (metabolism). As many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3765115\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of people <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treated with corticosteroids for long periods reported some type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4508273\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered that around 22% of patients treated with prednisone for a year or more gained more than 10 kg (22 pounds).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antipsychotics<\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drugs like olanzapine and clozapine can also affect metabolism, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3998960\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has linked nearly all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs to some kind of weight increase.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antihyperglycemics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are diabetes drugs that increase insulin levels, changing the body\u2019s fluid and fat retention. So, common diabetes drugs like insulin, sulfonylureas, and thiazolidinediones<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667368122000365\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antihypertensives:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not all blood pressure medications cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6109660\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> atenolol, metoprolol, and propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are associated with modest weight gain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from these medications can occur in men or women, and anyone worried about it should talk to a doctor about the risks, benefits, and possible alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be the culprit behind weight gain. These conditions can also exacerbate the weight-related effects of a poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, or chronic stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hypothyroidism<\/b><b> (<\/b><b>underactive thyroid<\/b><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a gland responsible for regulating energy consumption (among other things), so when it doesn\u2019t produce enough hormones, it can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/\/blog\/rapid-weight-gain-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
