Could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be joining that list? It seems like you can\u2019t turn on the news, scroll through social media, or even talk to your neighbor these days without hearing about the injectable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/expanding-use-glp-1s\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 drug that surged in popularity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just a few years ago, when a higher-concentration of the active ingredient (semaglutide) was approved as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the treatment of weight loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With high rates of both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and obesity in the U.S., it makes sense that people would be clamoring for what seems like a quick fix, especially compared to dieting, consistent exercise, or more invasive bariatric surgeries. In 2024, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/poll-finding\/kff-health-tracking-poll-may-2024-the-publics-use-and-views-of-glp-1-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 8 adults in the U.S. reported having tried a GLP-1 drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Ozempic. What\u2019s more interesting, though, is that as many as 75% of those people also report discontinuing the use of the drug, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2024\/11\/why-do-50-75-of-people-stop-taking-glp-1-drugs-within-a-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for reasons not totally known yet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to researchers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether Ozempic is a miracle drug or a passing trend remains up for debate, but its popularity at this point in time is clear. Learn more about how well Ozempic works for treating Type 2 diabetes, how many people are taking the drug for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/semaglutide-weight-loss\/\">weight loss<\/a>, and just how much money Americans are spending on semaglutide annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-have-type-2-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people have Type 2 diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 36 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. That\u2019s about 10% of the population. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/about\/about-type-2-diabetes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of Americans with diabetes mirrors the worldwide prevalence: About 10.5% of people globally have diabetes, though a small number have Type 1, not Type 2 diabetes. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/idf.org\/about-diabetes\/diabetes-facts-figures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Diabetes Federation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90\u201395% of all cases of diabetes. (CDC, 2024) This number is growing due to increasing rates and severity of childhood obesity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-are-overweight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people are overweight?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, about 2.5 billion adults and 390 million children under the age of 18 are overweight. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/obesity-and-overweight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., more than 30% of adults and 16% of kids ages 2\u201319 years old are overweight. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are more likely than women to be overweight: In 2017\u20132018, nearly 34% of men were overweight compared to nearly 27% of women. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/obesity-adult-17-18\/obesity-adult.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-have-obesity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people have obesity?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 890 million adults and 160 million children under age 18 have obesity (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/educational\/lose_wt\/BMI\/bmicalc.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a BMI of 30 or higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) worldwide. In the other half, obesity rates are higher than 35%. Obesity is more common in southern and midwestern states, with Arkansas, Mississippi, and West Virginia having obesity rates over 40%. This includes the South, which has had some of the highest obesity rates in the country. (KFF, 2024)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-use-glp-1-drugs-like-ozempic-for-type-2-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people use GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 4 in 10, or 43%, of U.S. adults with Type 2 diabetes report taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes by a healthcare provider. (KFF, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-use-ozempic-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people use Ozempic for weight loss?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 4 in 10 U.S. adults who have used a GLP-1 drug say it was for weight loss and not a chronic health condition like diabetes or heart disease. However, this number is lower for adults over 65: Only 1% of these users have taken a GLP-1 for weight loss alone. (KFF, 2024)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-ozempic-so-popular\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is Ozempic so popular?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. At that point, the drug was not a household name.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the FDA approved Ozempic for reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with Type 2 diabetes with known heart disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, the FDA approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-max-dose\/\">higher dose<\/a> of semaglutide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for use in treating obesity. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.iu.edu\/blogs\/bioethics\/on-the-increase-in-use-of-glp-1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024) \u201cThis triggered a sudden increase in semaglutide\u2019s popularity,\u201d Dr. Mittal says. \u201cTikTok trends, celebrity endorsements, and what seemed like real results quickly made it a sought-after weight loss solution.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescriptions for Ozempic started rising. From 2019 to 2020, the number of users jumped from 569 to 7,667. In 2021, that number jumped again to more than 13,000. In 2022, it was nearly 23,000. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.japh.2023.10.002\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Pharmacists Association<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the number of people taking Ozempic or Wegovy to lose weight quickly increased, the supply couldn\u2019t keep up with demand. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-shortage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic shortages made the news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, introducing even more people to the drug and its potential benefits for weight loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between July 2023 and May 2024, public awareness of Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs grew. Where previously only 19% of U.S. adults knew a lot about these drugs, now 32% say they know about them. (KFF, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2025, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/ozempic-kidney-disease-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved Ozempic for reducing the risk of worsening kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-effective-is-ozempic-for-type-2-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How effective is Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic helps people with Type 2 diabetes lower their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-a1c-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your HbA1C is the average level of your blood sugar over the past three months.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials, Ozempic lowered HbA1C by 1.4% and 1.6%, depending on the dose of the medication, for people with HbA1C levels between 8% and 8.9%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/ozempic.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies suggest that HbA1C levels can be lowered even further when semaglutide is combined with other medications for diabetes, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11384358\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Translational Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause Ozempic aids in weight loss, it can improve diabetes management on that front as well,\u201d Dr. Mittal says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-weight-do-people-lose-on-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much weight do people lose on Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOzempic typically results in a 6%\u201310% loss of your total body weight, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integratedgic.com\/blog\/supriya-rao\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supriya Rao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, director of Medical Weight Loss at Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts. However, Ozempic weight loss rates are lower than some other GLP-1 drugs, according to Dr. Rao. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro?q=Mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide) averages around 12%\u201317% body weight loss, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound?q=Zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (another formulation of tirzepatide) can result in as much as 21% body weight loss in some people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-use-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people use compounded semaglutide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of people taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-compounded-semaglutide-made-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is difficult to accurately report\u00a0 because compounding pharmacies and facilities that make it aren\u2019t required to report their sales. According to a complaint by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.503bs.org\/_files\/ugd\/90544a_2f297f7c5f2a45fb89f64fe6a5dcb5c7.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outsourcing Facilities Association (OFA) against the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February 2025,\u00a0 an estimated 2 million patients in the United States were given compounded versions of semaglutide from November 2023 to November 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the number of people receiving compounded semaglutide is about to decline: In early 2025, the FDA announced that the national shortage of the drug had ended. This means compounding pharmacies and facilities will no longer have the legal right to make alternative forms of semaglutide. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize#:~:text=%5B2\/21\/2025%5D,2022%20due%20to%20increased%20demand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-do-americans-spend-on-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much do Americans spend on Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that more money was spent on semaglutide in 2023 than on any other drug. Out of more than $722 billion spent, nearly $39 billion was on semaglutide. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/ajhp\/zxae105\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is also a top seller in Medicare Part D plans, which typically cover the drug when it\u2019s prescribed for Type 2 diabetes. In 2022, Medicare spent $4.6 million on Ozempic. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/press-release\/gross-medicare-spending-on-ozempic-and-other-glp-1s-is-already-skyrocketing-even-though-medicare-cannot-cover-the-drugs-for-weight-loss\/#:~:text=That%20was%20up%20from%20$57%20million%20in%202018.&amp;text=Gross%20spending%20on%20Ozempic%20alone%20increased%20from,up%20from%2010th%20place%20the%20year%20before\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"how-many-americans-use-insurance-for-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many Americans use insurance for Ozempic?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, almost 1.7 million Ozempic prescriptions were filled. Medicare and Medicare Part D covered a combined 38.2%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"how-many-americans-pay-for-ozempic-out-of-pocket\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many Americans pay for Ozempic out of pocket?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than 1% of Americans pay out of pocket for Ozempic. Out of the total number of Ozempic prescriptions filled, this amounts to about 6,732. (JAMA Health Forum, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to clinical trials, more than 48% of people taking Ozempic experience at least one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
