The drug\u2019s manufacturer (Takeda Pharmaceuticals) originally marketed it as Brintellix, but changed the name to Trintellix in 2016. Trintellix can be expensive without insurance or discounts, but a generic version could make the drug more affordable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-there-a-generic-for-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a generic for Trintellix?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no generic version of Trintellix on the market, but the FDA has issued several tentative approvals. A tentative approval means that the FDA has determined a generic drug product is ready for approval, but the brand-name drug\u2019s patents are still active. Trintellix\u2019s patent expires in June 2026, and generic versions may become available some time after that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen a patent expires, this allows generic manufacturers to create the generic drug by using an abbreviated approval process,\u201d says Tiffany Khieu, Pharm.D., an assistant professor at Marshall B. Ketchum University. However, it likely won\u2019t be right after the expiration date. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7953310\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study on generic drugs in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that the average time to bring a generic to market after patent expiration is around 1.5 years. What makes them so popular?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big draw for generics is that they\u2019re often less expensive. A large chunk of any drug\u2019s cost comes from the research and testing required to prove that it works and is safe for consumers. Generic drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/generic-drugs\/generic-drug-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require much less testing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since their reference product already proved its safety and efficacy, so they typically cost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/generic-drugs-low-cost-prescriptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80\u201385% less<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their brand-name counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything else is pretty much identical. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/generic-drugs\/overview-basics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA requires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that generic drugs have the exact same active ingredient, strength, dosage form (tablet, liquid, etc.), and route of administration (oral, topical, injectable, etc.) as the brand-name medication. So when a generic version of Trintellix comes out, it will work exactly the same way as Trintellix. \u201cBesides increasing serotonin levels (as all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do), Trintellix also acts directly on serotonin receptors, like the 5HT1A\/B, which may improve cognition,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralex.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Dimitriu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine. \u201cIt also blocks 5HT3 serotonin receptors, which may help with nausea and also add benefits to mood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6415809\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one from 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which assessed medications for blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, and psychiatric conditions, show that generic medicines can deliver very similar outcomes to brand-name drugs. \u201cIf differences do exist, it is seen in the excipients, also known as the non-active ingredients,\u201d Dr. Khieu says, which include things like dyes, fillers, or coatings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So an eventual generic for Trintellix will be expected to produce the same mood-boosting effects as its brand-name reference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-trintellix-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Trintellix cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"how-much-does-generic-trintellix-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are paying without insurance or discounts, a typical prescription for brand-name Trintellix would cost about $6,703 for 30, 20-mg tablets. So some doctors prescribe it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for anxiety as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29149828\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2018 meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that vortioxetine is a viable treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7495343\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a topic review from 2020 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that it could be a useful treatment for OCD as well. However, it might not always be the best option for these cases. \u201cGenerally speaking, vortioxetine is less beneficial for anxiety, and as good an antidepressant as the traditional ones, like Lexapro and Prozac, with possibly fewer side effects,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-trintellix-covered-by-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Trintellix covered by insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the manufacturer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trintellixhcp.com\/access-savings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Takeda Pharmaceuticals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 85% of patients with commercial insurance have coverage for brand-name Trintellix. However, out-of-pocket costs will vary. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-trintellix\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicaid-cover-trintellix\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicaid coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Trintellix will vary. You can discuss options with your healthcare provider, and they can give you medical advice on which antidepressant may be a better option for you, as well as the best way to stop taking Trintellix and start the new medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor anyone looking to switch off this medication, it should be done under medical supervision, and it should be done gradually, slowly lowering the dose of the vortioxetine while adding in the new agent to replace it,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cI always advise my patients to keep good notes on how they felt on a medication before we start lowering it, so they can compare it to the outcome once the change is made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stop-taking-trintellix-abruptly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop taking it abruptly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can experience withdrawal, also known as antidepressant discontinuation syndrome. Withdrawal symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, unusual dreams, tremors, trouble sleeping, paresthesia (\u201cpins and needles\u201d on the skin), fatigue, constipation, headaches, weight gain or loss, sexual dysfunction, and mood swings. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5449237\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that around 20% of people who go cold turkey with their antidepressants experience this condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A healthcare provider can come up with a plan to slowly ease you off Trintellix, or offer medical advice on other medications that might fit your needs. It\u2019s crucial to follow the physician\u2019s dosage directions and only take antidepressants that have been prescribed to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-use-of-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term use of Trintellix\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression isn\u2019t like a virus. In other words, it doesn\u2019t last a few days and then go away. So treatment for depression is usually long-term, and that may include Trintellix. In its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trintellixhcp.com\/clinical-data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients who took it for 48 weeks had a lower risk of depressive episodes than those who took Trintellix for only 16 weeks and then took a placebo (inactive treatment) for 32 weeks. A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36884024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52-week study published in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that patients taking vortioxetine showed continued improvements over the entire year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-side-effects\/#:~:text=Common%20side%20effects%20like%20nausea,sexual%20function%20like%20other%20antidepressants.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Trintellix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, abnormal dreams, and sexual dysfunction. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (elevated levels of serotonin), suicidal thoughts, bleeding problems, allergic reactions, and worsened manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder. However, per Dr. Dimitriu, \u201cvortioxetine may have slightly less weight gain, and possibly fewer sexual side effects than other SSRIs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone experiences adverse effects, so Trintellix, and eventually generic vortioxetine, are a safe and reliable maintenance treatment for many people with major depressive disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"expert-takeaway\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expert takeaway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix is not yet available in generic form, but if your insurance does not provide adequate coverage or if you are paying without insurance, there are other options.
