It treats high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrhythmia, caused by conditions like atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], anxiety, migraines, and more,\u201d says internist Supriya Rao, MD. \u201cThe medicine slows your heart rate and relaxes blood vessels, which can help reduce the workload on your heart.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking propranolol, one of your first questions is likely whether or not you need to make any changes to your lifestyle, such as avoiding alcohol use. In general, it is not recommended to mix propranolol and alcohol. Drinking too often or too much can cause physical symptoms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/4-facts-know-alcohol-affects-heart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased heart rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and blood pressure, angina (chest pain), or an irregular heartbeat, all of which conflict with the reason you would be taking propranolol in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-certain-people-at-greater-risk-of-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are certain people at greater risk of side effects?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some groups of people who are at a greater risk of experiencing side effects from mixing alcohol and propranolol. Here are the biggest ones to be aware of.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"people-with-certain-health-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with certain health conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rao notes that people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-blood-pressure-treatments-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart failure, liver disease, and diabetes (high blood sugar) are at a higher risk of side effects. These conditions impair all the systems that are responsible for breaking down propranolol and alcohol, which means both substances could take longer to move through your system. The result is an increased risk of side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"older-people\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older people<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older people are also at a higher risk of side effects. \u201cOlder adults are more susceptible because their bodies process medications and alcohol differently,\u201d Dr. Rao says. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinaging.org\/medications-older-adults\/medications-work-differently-older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Geriatrics Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, older people\u2019s bodies break down medications more slowly. This means those medicines stay in their systems for longer, putting them at an increased risk of side effects that may have more severe consequences for older folks than younger, such as dizziness that leads to a fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"people-taking-other-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking other medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have other prescription medications that you are taking regularly, you may also have a higher risk of side effects. \u201cIf someone was already on other blood pressure-lowering medication in addition to taking propranolol, alcohol should definitely be avoided,\u201d says Dr. Greene. Alcohol will exacerbate the effects of both medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTake caution if you\u2019re taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-pills-drugs-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well,\u201d Dr. Greene adds. Both alcohol and erectile dysfunction drugs (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tadalafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tadalafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/article\/erectile-dysfunction-alcohol.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause a drop in blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That way, you\u2019ll have a clearer picture of how your body is reacting to the drug and how it\u2019s working for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve been taking the medication for a while, it may be okay to have a drink a certain amount of time after your dosage. How long you have to wait depends on the formulation you take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Immediate-release:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cImmediate-release propranolol is typically metabolized in the body within 6-12 hours (8 on average) with a peak plasma time of 1-4 hours,\u201d Dr. Greene says. Having a drink eight hours after your dose will minimize alcohol\u2019s effects. If you take a dose more than once a day, seek medical advice from your healthcare provider about whether it\u2019s safe for you to have a drink between pills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Extended-release: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form of propranolol is typically metabolized within 24-27 hours, with peak plasma time in 6-14 hours, says Dr. Green. It\u2019s recommended to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682607.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at bedtime, so if you were to have a drink in the late afternoon or evening, your chances of experiencing increased side effects are slim.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"which-antihypertensives-are-not-affected-by-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which antihypertensives are not affected by alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol is generally not recommended if you are taking any type of antihypertensive medication. That said, there are different types of medication for high blood pressure and its associated conditions. Propranolol belongs to a class of heart medicines known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-pressure\/in-depth\/beta-blockers\/art-20044522\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
