It works by enhancing insulin secretion, which slows gastric emptying, leading to decreased appetite and weight loss. According to medical experts, Ozempic can cause your heart rate to increase following administration, but it\u2019s a rare side effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"semaglutide-ozempic-and-increased-heart-rate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide (Ozempic) and increased heart rate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, can increase heart rate due to its direct effects on the sinus node. The sinus node, or the sinoatrial (SA) node, is your heart\u2019s natural pacemaker\u2014a cluster of cells in the right atrium that generates electrical impulses that set the heart\u2019s rhythm and rate. Ozempic can stimulate this area of the heart, leading to a temporary increase in resting heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to increased heart rate, semaglutide\u2019s effects on cardiovascular function can reduce the risk of cardiac events. \u201cSemaglutide and other GLP-1 agonist drugs have consistently demonstrated improvement in cardiovascular functions,\u201d says Craig D. Robison, MD, a board-certified cardiologist at Tri-City Cardiology Consultants in Mesa, Arizona. \u201cThese drugs are associated with a decreased risk of stroke, heart attacks, and the development of heart failure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2307563#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity without diabetes found that a weekly semaglutide dose of 2.4 milligrams (mg) reduced the risk of death from cardiac events, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s crucial to note that increased heart rate is not a common side effect of semaglutide. \u201cAccording to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39118222\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SURE (SemaglUtide Real-World Evidence) program analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 16% of people experience an increased heart rate after two years on Ozempic, compared to 11% of people who were not on Ozempic in the same time frame,\u201d says Erika Gray, PharmD, founder of MytoolBox Genomics in San Francisco, California. \u201cAccording to the SUSTAIN 6 trial, the average increase in heart rate is between 2.75-3.2 beats per minute (bpm), which is clinically insignificant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the average heart rate increase is between two and three beats per minute, some individuals have experienced an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdf.hres.ca\/dpd_pm\/00047200.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase of up to 10 bpm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in resting heart rate after administering a 1.5 mg dose of semaglutide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"risk-factors-and-considerations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors and considerations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because semaglutide may increase resting heart rate, it may be an unsafe drug for some individuals. \u201cPatients with pre-existing heart failure who experience an increased heart rate with semaglutide and other GLP-1 agonist drugs are potentially at risk of their heart failure worsening,\u201d Dr. Robison explains. \u201cThese increases in heart rate are more pronounced in the longer-acting GLP-1 agonists such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from heart conditions, you should also avoid semaglutide if you have any of the following conditions or situations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic stomach problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye disease or vision problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical history of pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity to the drugs or its active ingredients<\/span><\/li>\n<li 400;\"> that could further contribute to increased heart rate with the injectable medication include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical inactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive alcohol consumption or withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much caffeine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking or nicotine use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" very rare side effect of semaglutide, other potential side effects are more likely to occur while taking this injectable medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common However, don&#8217;t hesitate to consult your healthcare provider if you believe you\u2019re experiencing an elevated heart rate or other symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To stay on top of your heart health while taking semaglutide, you can start monitoring your heart rate daily to keep track of your bpm and identify any changes early on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/about\/newsroom\/articles\/how-to-check-your-heart-rate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">step-by-step guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for monitoring your heart rate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the pads\/tips of your index finger and middle finger and gently press them against the side of your neck. You can also press on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Count the number of beats you feel for 15 seconds. You can use a stopwatch or other timing device to track the seconds accurately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiply the number of beats by four to get your heart rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, for example, if you count 20 beats in 15 seconds, multiply 20 by four, for a total of 80 bpm. According to the American Heart Association, most adults should have a heart rate between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/target-heart-rates#:~:text=For%20most%20adults%2C%20a%20resting,as%2040%20beats%20per%20minute.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 to 100 beats per minute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
