Terbinafine<\/span><\/a> is a prescription medicine that treats <\/span>fungal infections<\/span> of the body (<\/span>ringworm<\/span>), feet (<\/span>athlete\u2019s feet<\/span> or <\/span>tinea pedis<\/span>), <\/span>fingernails<\/span>, <\/span>toenails<\/span>, scalp (dandruff), and groin (<\/span>jock itch<\/span>). It belongs to a group of medications called <\/span>antifungals<\/span>. Medical experts recommend <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> as the first-line treatment for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> (also known as <\/span>onychomycosis<\/span> or tinea unguium) due to its proven efficacy and effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Efficacy of <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span><\/h2>\n

Terbinafine, known by brand names Laml and Terbinex, <\/span>\u00a0is one of the most effective treatments for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>Terbinafine<\/span> is highly effective for treating <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> because it has activity against a wide range of <\/span>dermatophyte<\/span> (fungal species),\u201d says Kibibi Wanzu, DPM, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon at <\/span>Modern Podiatry<\/span><\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia. \u201c<\/span>Oral terbinafine<\/span> is particularly effective because it is a systemic medication that works on a cellular level, disrupting the fungal cell membrane function, ultimately leading to fungal cell death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>research<\/span><\/a>, a daily oral dose of 250 milligrams (mg) of the <\/span>antifungal medicine<\/span> over 12 or 16 weeks cured <\/span>dermatophyte<\/span> toenail<\/span> onychomycosis<\/span>, a common nail fungus, in 34 out of 151 patients without the need for a second medical treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> followed 120 patients with <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> who received <\/span>oral terbinafine<\/span> for 6, 12, and 24 weeks. Out of the 98 patients eligible for evaluation of the <\/span>effects of terbinafine<\/span> treatment, 67% were completely cured of the <\/span>fungal infection<\/span> by week six, 82% by week 12, and 85% by week 24. Patients need to be aware that toenail onychomycosis infections may come back even when they were previously cured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Terbinafine<\/span> isn\u2019t the only oral treatment for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>. <\/span>Itraconazole<\/span><\/a> (Sporanox) is another <\/span>oral antifungal medication<\/span> that <\/span>healthcare providers<\/span> may prescribe for nail fungus. While it\u2019s been <\/span>proven<\/span><\/a> that <\/span>itraconazole<\/span> can cure <\/span>toenail<\/span> fungal infections<\/span> within three months, <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> is slightly more effective. In a previously mentioned study, researchers also found that <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> was more effective and had lower relapse rates than <\/span>itraconazole<\/span> in treating <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Griseofulvin<\/span><\/a> (Gris-PEG) is another oral medication to treat <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>. An <\/span>older study<\/span><\/a> found <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> to be significantly more effective than griseofulvin, with 42% of patients being completely cured compared to only 2% cured with the latter drug.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth oral medication for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> is <\/span>fluconazole<\/span><\/a> (Diflucan). It\u2019s not <\/span>FDA<\/span>-approved for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>, but <\/span>healthcare providers<\/span> may prescribe it off-label. However, like <\/span>itraconazole<\/span> and griseofulvin, <\/span>fluconazole<\/span> has significantly lower cure rates for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> than <\/span>terbinafine<\/span>. A <\/span>randomized, double-blind study<\/span><\/a> discovered that taking 250 mg of <\/span>terbinafine<\/span> daily for 12 weeks was more effective than 150 mg of <\/span>fluconazole<\/span> weekly for 12 or 24 weeks, with the first-line drug having higher cure rates at 67% compared to 21% and 32%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another potential treatment for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span> is laser treatment. During this treatment, your <\/span>healthcare provider<\/span> directs a laser beam and special lights<\/span><\/a> at your <\/span>toenail<\/span> to treat the fungus. However, cure rates are <\/span>significantly lower<\/span><\/a> than those of oral medications, and <\/span>healthcare providers<\/span> typically do not use lasers as the first-line treatment for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Topical treatments<\/span>, such as ciclopirox (Penlac), efinaconazole (Jublia), bifonazole (Canespor, Bifon, Mycospor), and tavaborole (Kerydin), are also popular treatments for <\/span>toenail fungus<\/span>. But, like the other treatments, they\u2019re not as effective as <\/span>terbinafine<\/span>. \u201cIn contrast, <\/span>topical<\/span> applications to treat nail fungus tend to be less effective because they struggle to penetrate the nail plate deep enough to attack the fungus,\u201d Dr. Wanzu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
