Also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are medications commonly used to treat hyperlipidemia, or high levels of fats in the blood. In fact, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends statins to help prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in adults between the ages of 40 and 75 with at least one risk factor, such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, or smoking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin, also known by the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-atorvastatin-a-blood-thinner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is perhaps the most commonly used statin in the U.S. \u201cIt is considered a very effective drug to treat hyperlipidemia and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events due to its long half-life, effectiveness in reducing triglycerides and LDL (low density lipoprotein), anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-atherogenic properties,\u201d says Dr. Charu Sawhney, DO, an internist with Harbor Health in Round Rock, Texas. To get the most benefit from this popular medication and reduce the possibility of side effects, it\u2019s important to take it correctly each day. Because atorvastatin is long-acting, you can take it at the time that works best for you. Here\u2019s why.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-is-the-best-time-to-take-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When is the best time to take atorvastatin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/atv.0000000000000073\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting statin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means you can choose the time of day that works best for you, and it remains effective when your body needs it the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins come in two formulations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Short-acting statins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Zocor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mevacor (lovastatin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lescor (fluvastatin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be taken in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29771699\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, close to bedtime, because your body makes cholesterol when you sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29771699\/\"><b>Longer-acting statins<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor (rosuvastatin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and atorvastatin<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be taken at any time of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because atorvastatin has a half-life of 14 hours, you can take your dose at any time of the day. It will remain in your body long enough to target the synthesis of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), aka \u201cbad cholesterol,\u201d that occurs after you fall asleep that evening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best time of day to take it is the time the patient remembers,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahyandell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Yandell, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical pharmacist with Scriptology Health. However, it\u2019s important to take it at approximately the same time each day so the levels of the medication remain steady.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take the tablet form of atorvastatin with or without food. The oral suspension version should be taken on an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a600045.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empty stomach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two hours after a meal, or one hour prior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-if-i-miss-a-dose-of-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if I miss a dose of atorvastatin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you forget to take a dose but remember within a couple of hours, it\u2019s okay to go ahead and take it then, says Dr. Yandell. However, timing matters! Generally speaking, though, statin therapy is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6047411\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a relatively low risk of side effects, especially clinically significant adverse effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as with any medication, side effects of statin medications can happen. Possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430779\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle Pain (myalgia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyspepsia (indigestion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain (arthralgia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold symptoms (nasopharyngitis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the extremities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lipitor-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly reported side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are joint pain and cold-like symptoms. Rare, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430779\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may occur, such as rhabdomyolysis or liver function abnormalities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/19081-atorvastatin-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new symptoms that concern you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention immediately and call your healthcare provider for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-get-the-most-out-of-my-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I get the most out of my atorvastatin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get the most out of atorvastatin, consider it just one part of your approach to improving your health. Following these guidelines can enhance the medication&#8217;s effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make lifestyle changes to lower cholesterol.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cPairing it with lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet and exercise, along with reducing fast, fried, and processed foods, will give one the best lipid-lowering benefit from taking the medication,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/harborhealth.com\/providers\/charu-sawhney\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sawhney<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid drinking grapefruit juice. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In large amounts, it can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/19081-atorvastatin-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and increase the risk of side effects. \u201cThe juice is concentrated,\u201d explains Dr. Yandell. \u201cEating a grapefruit is not as risky because it\u2019s not as concentrated.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Check in with your provider regularly. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t any obvious signs that atorvastatin is doing its job. \u201cThe only way to know that it is working is through lab results,\u201d says Dr. Sawhney. Your provider can check your cholesterol levels with a blood test called a lipid panel and determine if any additional treatment or a dose adjustment is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid taking over-the-counter or prescription medications and dietary supplements that interact with atorvastatin. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples include heart failure medications (such as digoxin), certain antibiotics (such as erythromycin and clarithromycin), ritonavir, cyclosporine, niacin (vitamin B3), St. John\u2019s wort, and oral contraceptives. Due to the many food and drug interactions with atorvastatin, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider before starting any new medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/health-lab\/8-easy-ways-remember-take-your-medication\"><b>strategies to remember your dose<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s only effective if you take it, and as with any daily medication, that can be tricky. Try coordinating taking your medication with another activity that you do daily, such as taking a shower in the morning or brushing your teeth at night. Or, use a pillbox that\u2019s labeled with each day of the week, and put it in an easily visible location.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin can help reduce your risk of heart disease and other complications by helping reduce high cholesterol levels. However, it\u2019s critical to take it every single day.
