Although strawberries are not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/kidney-topics\/strawberries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium-rich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Manaker says consuming them in larger quantities could increase your overall potassium intake. If you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or are on a low potassium diet, make sure you get the advice of your healthcare provider and stick to their recommended serving size to get the health benefits without the risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-improve-gut-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Improve gut health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One cup of strawberries contains about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=09316-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 grams of fiber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helping you move the needle closer to the recommended 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day. Regularly adding strawberries to your diet can improve digestive health by preventing constipation and promoting bowel regularity, says Dr. Odogwu. Strawberries also have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/medblog\/hydrating-healthy-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high water content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps prevent dehydration and constipation, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9583540\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that eating blueberries helped certain strains of healthy gut bacteria thrive. Improve brain health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple studies suggest that regularly eating strawberries improves memory and cognition, and may even lower your risk for dementia and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/alzheimers-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3582325\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that eating high amounts of strawberries and blueberries slowed down cognitive decline by as much as 2 \u00bd years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6950087\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37892506\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that strawberries&#8217; antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may lower a person\u2019s risk for dementia, protecting brain health and improving memory and mood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-fight-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Fight cancer\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has shown that strawberries may prevent cancer, says Dr. Odogwu, thanks to compounds called phytochemicals that fight cancer-causing cells. Two of the most studied phytochemicals, anthocyanins and phenolic acids, have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfcr.org\/blog\/season-of-the-cancer-fighting-superfruit-strawberries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown promise in helping to prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while increasing the body\u2019s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory response. Plus, there are other cancer-fighting nutrients in strawberries, too: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicr.org\/cancer-prevention\/food-facts\/strawberries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fruit may be associated with a lower risk of several types of cancer, including lung and colon, and fiber is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-balance-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Balance blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The glycemic index (GI) of a food refers to how quickly it makes your blood sugar levels increase. For people with diabetes or at risk of diabetes, it\u2019s healthier to eat more foods with a low GI because they take longer to be digested and cause a slower, steadier <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/health\/wellness\/diet-trends\/what-is-glycemic-index\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rise in blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strawberries have a low glycemic index, says Manaker, making them great for stabilizing blood sugar levels. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S002231662500224X#:~:text=(2020)%20reported%20data%20from%2011,in%20adults%20targeting%20these%20markers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strawberries had a positive impact on insulin resistance in people with prediabetes. Prevent anemia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationwidechildrens.org\/conditions\/anemia-iron-deficiency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iron deficiency anemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t have enough iron in their red blood cells, so they may need to get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iron-rich-foods-anemia-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more from their diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But iron isn\u2019t always fully absorbed by the body when it\u2019s ingested through foods and supplements. Pairing iron with foods high in vitamin C helps your body absorb more iron, and with almost 90 milligrams of vitamin C per one-cup serving, strawberries definitely fit the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen strawberries are eaten with iron-rich foods or supplements, they can help prevent and treat anemia,\u201d says Dr. Odogwu. Managing iron deficiency anemia should be discussed with the treating healthcare professional to see what measures need to be taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-enhance-sleep-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Enhance sleep quality<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strawberries contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S030881461100197X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a hormone that regulates the body\u2019s sleep cycle. According to Dr. Odogwu, research suggests that regularly eating strawberries can help you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get more sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10745662\/#:~:text=There%20has%20been%20interest%20in,26%2C27%2C28%5D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, found that people who ate berries were less likely to get fewer than 7 hours of sleep per night. In addition to melatonin, strawberries also contain nutrients like potassium, calcium, and polysaccharides (a type of carbohydrate), which have also been shown to play a role in sleep quality, per that same study.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"strawberry-nutrition-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strawberry nutrition facts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Manaker, one serving of strawberries is equal to about 1 cup (or 8 average-sized strawberries). In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=09316-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one cup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll get around:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">89 milligrams of vitamin C<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 grams of fiber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">233 milligrams of potassium<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36 micrograms of folate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because strawberries are so versatile, you might find yourself reaching for a serving day after day: adding them to your cereal, mixing them into yogurt, or tossing them on top of a chicken and spinach salad. But is it okay to eat strawberries every day? Manaker says yes. They\u2019re a great choice for your daily diet because they\u2019re low in calories and rich in nutrients. Just make sure you wash them well to remove any potential residues like pesticides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re really looking to maximize the health benefits of strawberries, try to eat them raw; Dr. Odogwu says strawberries retain more vitamin C and polyphenols when eaten raw versus cooked. Just keep in mind that they are high in fiber, especially when raw, so high amounts can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. This is more likely in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibd-vs-ibs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBS) and fructose malabsorption syndrome, says Dr. Odogwu, but it could happen to anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-eat-strawberries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not eat strawberries?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people can happily eat as many strawberries as they want, but some people should avoid or limit their intake. This includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with certain allergies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you have a known allergy to strawberries, you should definitely avoid them, but you might want to consider avoiding them if you also have a birch pollen allergy or experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/oral-allergy-syndrome-(oas)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral allergy syndrome (OAS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when eating foods like apples and peaches, says Dr. Odogwu. Symptoms of OAS include oral itching, hives, and swelling; anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening) is a potential complication, but it happens only rarely with OAS.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People on blood thinning medications:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Odogwu says strawberries contain salicylate, a chemical that can increase the risk of bleeding for people taking blood thinners like warfarin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with a history of kidney stones:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Strawberries contain oxalate, a compound that can bind to calcium, and because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/kidney-topics\/calcium-oxalate-stones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, excessive intake of strawberries could increase the risk of these kidney stones in people with a history of them. You may not have to avoid strawberries completely, though: \u201cIn people with a history of kidney stones, boiled strawberries may be better because the process of boiling reduces the oxalate content,\u201d Dr. Odogwu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with certain health conditions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The naturally occurring sugar in strawberries (fructose) can cause bloating and diarrhea in people with IBS, says Dr. Odogwu, adding that people with fructose malabsorption syndrome\u2014a common condition in kids under 10\u2014may also want to avoid or limit strawberries because they can cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-why-are-strawberries-good-for-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Why are strawberries good for you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strawberries are one of the tastiest and most convenient ways to add fruit to your diet, and just a single one-cup serving is surprisingly good for you. They\u2019re full of vitamin C, folate, and fiber; they\u2019re rich in disease-fighting antioxidants; their anti-inflammatory effects can improve your heart and brain health; they\u2019re diabetes-friendly; and they may even help you manage conditions like anemia and kidney disease.
