Taking oral birth control pills with Zepbound can make the medication less effective. \u201cZepbound significantly reduces the absorption of birth control pills,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnlapuma\/details\/experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John La Puma, MD, FACP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified internist, weight management expert, best-selling author of REFUEL, and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/john-la-puma-md.kit.com\/bd26295f80\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ozempic Blueprint: A Simple Guide to Boost GLP-1 Naturally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Santa Barbara, California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are some oral contraceptives that can interact with Zepbound:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aurovela, Blisovi, Hailey Fe, etc. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/norethindrone-eth-estradiol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethinyl estradiol\/norethindrone acetate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasmin, Yaz, and Syeda (ethinyl estradiol\/drospirenone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estaylla, Vylibra, Tri-Mili, etc. (ethinyl estradiol\/norgestimate)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may recommend a backup birth control method in the early weeks of taking Zepbound. \u201cI suggest patients use a barrier as an added precaution or switch to a non-oral form of birth control for four weeks with the start of Zepbound and for four weeks each time the dose is increased,\u201d Dr. Puma explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin is a natural hormone in the body, but it is also prescribed (known as human insulin) as an injectable medication to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682611.html#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with Type 1 or 2 diabetes. \u201cTaking insulin itself greatly increases the risk of hypoglycemia if you\u2019re on Zepbound,\u201d Dr. Puma explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The types of human insulin available include:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin aspart (Fiasp, NovoLog)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin detemir (Levemir)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin glargine (Lantus, Toujeo)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start taking Zepbound, your healthcare provider will adjust the dosage of your insulin injections to reduce the risk of low blood sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"meglitinides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meglitinides<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meglinitides are oral antidiabetic drugs prescribed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hopkinsdiabetesinfo.org\/medications-for-type-2-diabetes-sulfonylureas-and-meglitinides\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control high blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with Type 2 diabetes. Like sulfonylureas and human insulin, Zepbound can mess with the effectiveness of meglinitides, potentially increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the types of meglitinides that can interact with Zepbound:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/repaglinide\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repaglinide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nateglinide\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nateglinide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Starlix)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to take Zepbound along with meglinitides, your healthcare provider will make the appropriate adjustments to the dosage of the antidiabetic drug to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-zepbound-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Zepbound interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a family history of certain health conditions could increase the risk of adverse reactions while taking Zepbound. \u201cZepbound does have a black box warning due to findings in rodent studies concerning thyroid tumors,\u201d Bruno says. \u201cWhile this hasn\u2019t been seen in humans, anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 should steer clear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"zepbound-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound and alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While alcohol doesn\u2019t directly interact with Zepbound, Dr. Puma says that the substance could worsen the weight loss drug\u2019s GI side effects. \u201cThere is also an increased risk of hypoglycemia, particularly if taken on an empty stomach or in diabetic patients,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"zepbound-and-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound and caffeine\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to alcohol, caffeine doesn\u2019t interact with Zepbound. However, because of the medication\u2019s effects on the GI system, drinking caffeine in the early weeks of starting Zepbound could cause some mild side effects. \u201cAdding in caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can cause some jitteriness, nausea, or just generally feeling unwell,\u201d Bruno explains. \u201cIf a patient is sensitive to reflux or gets the anxious jitters, I usually recommend scaling back their caffeine or at least pairing it with food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-minimize-zepbound-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to minimize Zepbound interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several ways to reduce your risk of Zepbound interactions. A good starting point is making sure that you don\u2019t have any medical conditions or situations that could increase the risk of interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the FDA, these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2025\/217806Orig1s020lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Digestive problems: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound is known to cause several digestive problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and indigestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kidney problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because Zepbound may cause GI problems, it might lead to dehydration due to severe fluid loss. If you already have an existing kidney condition, this could worsen it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Type 2 diabetes and diabetic retinopathy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have diabetic retinopathy caused by Type 2 diabetes, Zepbound may cause temporary vision changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mood disorders: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking the weight loss drug while managing depression or similar mood disorders could lead to suicidal thoughts, ideation, or behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Severe allergic reaction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re allergic to any of the ingredients in Zepbound, your healthcare provider likely won\u2019t prescribe the medication, as there\u2019s a risk you could experience another allergic reaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Upcoming surgery: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the weight loss drug\u2019s mechanism of action, it can slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach. This could lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21954-aspiration-pneumonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulmonary aspiration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or aspiration pneumonia), which is when food or other stomach contents are inhaled into your airways and lungs while under general anesthesia. If you have a scheduled surgery involving sedation, notify your healthcare provider before starting Zepbound. If you\u2019re already taking the injectable medicine, ensure that your healthcare team is aware.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no research to determine whether Zepbound is safe to inject during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or plan to, please consult your healthcare provider before starting Zepbound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from certain medical conditions and situations, you can lower your risk of adverse side effects from Zepbound with the following tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Consult your healthcare provider:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Before starting Zepbound, notify your healthcare provider of any medications, supplements, or substances you\u2019re currently taking, family history of medical conditions, and any plans for pregnancy or breastfeeding.
