However, studies point to a few concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro comes with a boxed warning (also called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for thyroid cancer because GLP-1 agonists caused thyroid tumors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3281535\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in lab mice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Studies examining the link between thyroid cancer and GLP-1 medications in people have produced mixed results:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/46\/2\/384\/147888\/GLP-1-Receptor-Agonists-and-the-Risk-of-Thyroid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found an increased risk of thyroid cancer in people who had used GLP-1 receptor agonists (specifically exenatide, liraglutide, or dulaglutide) for one to three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1871402123001303?via%3Dihub#bib2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another 2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found no increased risk of thyroid or pancreatic cancer in people who had taken semaglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-enm.org\/journal\/view.php?number=2572\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found no increased risk of thyroid cancer in people who had taken tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro and in Zepbound) for six to 18 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, people who had taken GLP-1 agonists for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dom-pubs.pericles-prod.literatumonline.com\/doi\/10.1111\/dom.12926\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 12 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were found to be at an increased risk for gallstones (cholelithiasis).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a more positive note, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/clinical-trials\/2024\/11\/15\/15\/13\/summit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Mounjaro lowered the risk of heart failure among participants who had taken it for two years. Findings from the same study suggest that Mounjaro may also reduce inflammation throughout the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-mounjaro-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Mounjaro side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, Mounjaro side effects go away with consistent use. \u201cThe side effects tend to kick in during the first month but almost always disappear by month three,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuarywellnessinstitute.com\/reviewer\/dr-megan-horsham.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megan Horsham<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a medical weight loss doctor at The Sanctuary Wellness Institute who prescribes GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro. Some people may experience side effects when increasing the dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until then, try these tips to ease the gastrointestinal discomfort commonly associated with Mounjaro:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat smaller meals throughout the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat slowly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sip water or tea, especially if vomiting or constipated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat foods that are easy to digest, such as toast, applesauce, bananas, rice, crackers, potatoes, broth-based soups, and chicken.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid spicy, greasy, or high-fat foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combat nausea by nibbling on gingersnaps or drinking ginger tea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use over-the-counter medications to control constipation, diarrhea, or heartburn. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a recommendation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider should start you on a low dose of Mounjaro and gradually increase it over time until you reach an effective and tolerable dose. \u201c[Titration] gives your system time to adapt to the medication,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkliposuction.com\/liposuction-surgeon-new-york\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arnold Breitbart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head plastic surgeon at the New York Liposuction Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your prescribing physician right away if you start to struggle with side effects. \u201cI\u2019ve had patients go from nearly giving up on Mounjaro to tolerating it beautifully with just a little support,\u201d says Dr. Breitbart. He recommends day-to-day strategies like those listed above, but he says some patients benefit from a short-term prescription for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antiemetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-nausea medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cto get them over the hump.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Horsham shares another tip: \u201cInjecting the medication in your arm or thigh may cause less nausea than injecting it into your stomach. It appears the absorption rate might be slightly slower here, which could lessen potential effects.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t change the dose or quit taking Mounjaro without seeking medical advice, as skipping or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-when-you-stop-mounjaro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delaying a dose of Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may lead to withdrawal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, constipation, irritability, and increased blood sugar levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mounjaro-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro alternatives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find Mounjaro side effects intolerable, you\u2019re not alone. In one study, 7% of participants <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gi.org\/journals-publications\/ebgi\/schoenfeld2_feb2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had to withdraw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the side effects of Mounjaro.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include other GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus), exenatide (Byetta), dulaglutide (Trulicity), and liraglutide (Victoza and Saxenda). Unfortunately, these tend to produce the same side effects as Mounjaro.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal discomfort are common across all these medications,\u201d Dr. Breitbart says. \u201cSome patients have reported more pronounced appetite suppression and changes in taste [with Mounjaro], but it\u2019s mostly anecdotal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned about the short- and long-term effects of Mounjaro, talk to a healthcare professional about other diabetes or weight management medications. Although stomach upset is a common side effect in other diabetes drugs like metformin and sulfonylureas, your body may react differently to each type of medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are some Mounjaro alternatives and their common and long-term side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"metformin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/25004-biguanides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most widely prescribed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diabetes medication and is usually healthcare providers\u2019 first-line treatment. It\u2019s the only drug in the biguanide class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/metformin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upset stomach, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, gas, headache, and low energy. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a long-term side effect of metformin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dpp-4-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DPP-4 Inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/januvia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Januvia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sitagliptin) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/onglyza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onglyza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (saxagliptin), among others. Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/januvia-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Januvia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include headache, upper respiratory tract infection, sore throat, and a stuffy or runny nose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, the Food and Drug Administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-fda-warns-dpp-4-inhibitors-type-2-diabetes-may-cause-severe-joint-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about debilitating joint pain as a result of DPP-4 inhibitors. The pain could start at any time, even years after starting a DPP-4 inhibitor. There have been cases of heart and kidney problems associated with DPP-4&#8217;s, so tell your healthcare provider if you have heart or kidney problems or are considered high risk for heart or kidney problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"thiazolidinediones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thiazolidinediones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called glitazones or TZDs, thiazolidinediones include the Type 2 diabetes medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/actos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pioglitazone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pioglitazone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Pioglitazone is available alone and as part of various combination medications that contain more than one active ingredient. Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pioglitazone-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of pioglitazone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include fluid retention, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, sore throat, stuffy nose, and muscle pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21325145\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that the risk of serious pneumonia or a lower respiratory tract infection is higher when thiazolidinediones are taken long-term. And because thiazolidinediones cause fluid retention, their use may increase the risk of edema and congestive heart failure. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK551656\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with their long-term use include fractures, bladder cancer, liver toxicity, increased ovulation, and possible birth defects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sulfonylureas<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sulfonylureas drug class includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amaryl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amaryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (glimepiride), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glucotrol-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucotrol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (glipizide), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glynase\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glynase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (glyburide). Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glimepiride-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glimepiride side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include headache, dizziness, weakness, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One potential side effect of long-term sulfonylurea use is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4548036\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease in insulin secretion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may make your diabetes more difficult to manage in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sodium-glucose-cotransporter-2-sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (empagliflozin) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/farxiga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dapagliflozin), are commonly prescribed for Type 2 diabetes. These drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK576405\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have other uses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. For example, Jardiance can be used in people with heart disease, heart failure, or kidney disease. Common side effects include urinary tract and genital yeast infections. Long-term side effects may include an increased risk of lower limb amputation. Additionally, other serious side effects may occur, such as serious UTIs or necrotizing fasciitis (a rare but serious infection that occurs between the anus and genitals).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-antidiabetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other antidiabetics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may also prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meglitinides, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other medications (including combination drugs that contain more than one active ingredient) to control Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and weight. The risk of short- and long-term side effects should be weighed against the health benefits provided by the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro aren\u2019t associated with as many long-term side effects as other antidiabetic medications, but that may be because there has been limited long-term research into this class of drugs. With more studies, we may learn about additional long-term concerns.
