These drugs are designed to lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL), reduce triglyceride levels, and slightly raise high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Here\u2019s what statin use looks like in 2025, including how many people are taking them, which statin medications are most commonly prescribed, and how many people experience side effects while taking these drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevalence-of-high-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevalence of high cholesterol<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., about 11.3% of U.S. adults ages 20 and older have high cholesterol. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db515.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High total cholesterol levels were most prevalent among adults between the ages of 40 and 59. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db363.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide, approximately 39% of the adult population has high cholesterol. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/what-we-do\/cholesterol\/#:~:text=Globally%2C%20raised%20total%20cholesterol%20affects,Oceania%20and%20central%20Latin%20America\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Heart Federation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the U.S., the states with the highest prevalence of high cholesterol include Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Maine, South Carolina, and Kansas. (CDC, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are usually more likely to have high LDL (\u201cbad\u201d cholesterol) levels than women, with the exception being that non-Hispanic white women have a higher prevalence than non-Hispanic white men. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2019\/01\/11\/ethnicity-a-risk-enhancing-factor-under-new-cholesterol-guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All races are affected by high cholesterol, without significant differences among races in the prevalence of high total cholesterol. Between 2015 and 2018, almost 11% of Hispanic adults had high cholesterol, compared to almost 12% of non-Hispanic white adults, almost 12% of non-Hispanic Asian adults, and 10% of non-Hispanic Black adults. (CDC 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"statins-use-in-the-u-s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins use in the U.S.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2019, 35% of Americans were taking some kind of statin to treat their cholesterol levels. This was a large increase from 2009, when only 12% of Americans were taking a statin. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jsps.2023.04.002\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are more likely to take statins compared to women. In fact, a 2023 study found that women were significantly less willing to take statins recommended by a healthcare provider. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2801783\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Network Open<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across ethnicities, statin use varies widely, even when people are at a high risk for heart disease. For example, one 2023 study showed that more than 37% of high-risk White participants took statins compared to less than 24% of high-risk Black and Hispanic participants. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamacardiology\/fullarticle\/2802859\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Cardiology<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New research into the methods that help providers identify adults who could benefit from statins suggests more than 4 million Americans may be taking statins that they don\u2019t actually need, based on a newer cardiovascular disease risk calculation method. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/article-abstract\/2819821\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Internal Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"statins-use-worldwide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins use worldwide<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 200 million adults worldwide use statins. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.escardio.org\/Education\/Practice-Tools\/Talking-to-patients\/arming-your-patients-with-the-facts-on-statins#:~:text=First%20dispensed%20in%201987%2C%20they,involving%20at%20least%201%2C000%20patients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Society of Cardiology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2015 and 2020, worldwide statin use increased. However, people living in high-income countries are far more likely to use statins than people in low-income countries, so the increase hasn\u2019t been evenly distributed in other parts of the world. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmjopen-2022-061350\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ Open<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disparity in statin use between high- and low-income countries typically has to do with accessibility of these medications as well as their affordability. Public healthcare facilities have less access to them than privately owned facilities, and the average per-month cost of statins varies widely by country. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/utilization-of-statins?tab=table\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our World in Data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"types-of-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All statins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22282-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work by blocking your liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from making cholesterol, but there are many different statin medications that do this. \u201cWhat sets them apart from one another,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmacistsguide.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., founder of The Pharmacist\u2019s Guide, \u201cis how they\u2019re each absorbed, distributed, and broken down by your body, as well as how much of the drug actually makes it to your bloodstream (a.k.a. their bioavailability).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some statins also vary in potency, Dr. Lewis adds, with some decreasing LDL cholesterol at higher percentages than others. These are called high-intensity statins; most statins have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK583664\/table\/ch1.tab1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">range of intensity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on their dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"most-popular-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most popular statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lipitor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (atorvastatin) is the statin most popularly searched for online, which experts typically agree is a good indicator of how often a drug is prescribed compared to others in its class. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/crestor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (rosuvastatin) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zocor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zocor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (simvastatin) are the second and third most commonly searched for statins (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6595473\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These statistics also hold true for the U.S., where about 36% of statin prescriptions are for Lipitor, and about 34% are for Zocor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., about 60% of statin prescriptions are for moderate-intensity statins. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"the-cost-of-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The cost of statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. healthcare system spends about $10 billion on statins each year. Total patient spending is about $3 billion out-of-pocket (OOP) every year for statin medications. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Medicare spent around $5 billion on statins, an increase from 2013. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2013 and 2019, overall statin spending increased, but OOP spending decreased. However, OOP spending varies across races: non-Hispanic Asians pay an average of $141 per month, compared to other populations (like Hispanics and non-Hispanic White people) who spend between $55 and $71 per month. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/statin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include muscle pain, liver damage, and an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone experiences these symptoms: Muscle pain occurs in about 1%\u201310% of people taking statins, and liver enzyme elevation in about 1%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-cholesterol\/in-depth\/statin-side-effects\/art-20046013\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"frequently-asked-questions-about-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently asked questions about statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-do-you-need-to-take-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do you need to take statins?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/when-to-take-statins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for life, according to Dr. Lewis, unless they experience an allergic reaction or adverse side effects. If you\u2019ve been prescribed statins, it\u2019s probably because your body makes too much cholesterol. Without statins, it will continue to make too much. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-are-the-side-effects-of-stopping-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other medications that lower cholesterol can be used in place of statins for people who can\u2019t take them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-for-statins-to-start-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take for statins to start working?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn general, statins take between two and four weeks to start lowering your cholesterol,\u201d says Dr. Lewis. But if you need a higher dose than originally prescribed, it will take longer for the medication to work to its full potential. For example, Dr. Lewis says if your provider is slowly titrating you up to a higher dose, it can take up to six months to get the desired effect on your cholesterol levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"are-there-any-alternatives-to-statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there any alternatives to statins?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonzahealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Bonza, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, primary care and family medicine physician with Bonza Health, people with advanced liver impairment and anyone who experiences severe muscle pain as a side effect of statins will need to use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/atorvastatin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different type of medication to lower cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
