Several factors that can affect coverage include someone\u2019s health history, specific insurance plan, and what it\u2019s prescribed for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-fatty-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes fatty liver disease?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty liver disease is the buildup of fat in the liver. The cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, is still being studied, but someone\u2019s family history, diet, and personal health history can affect the risk of developing this condition. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/liver-disease\/nafld-nash\/symptoms-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factors that can increase the risk of NAFLD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overweight or obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol or triglycerides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic syndrome, which can include high blood pressure, high waist size, high triglycerides, low good cholesterol level, and high blood sugar\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly genetics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly a diet high in the sweetener fructose\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medvidi.com\/blog\/author\/dr-michael-chichak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Chichak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, medical director at MEDvidi, explains how fatty liver is associated with Type 2 diabetes and obesity: \u201cFatty liver disease is linked with diabetes and obesity due to insulin resistance, which is a prominent feature of NAFLD. The storage of fat in the liver increases due to obesity and diabetes, which further aggravates these diseases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-help-treat-fatty-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic help treat fatty liver disease?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are early studies suggesting that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, can be used to treat NAFLD. A meta-analysis published in 2023 found that semaglutide was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjgnet.com\/1007-9327\/full\/v29\/i37\/5327.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe and effective for the treatment of NAFLD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the same year, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1871402123001455?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review and meta-analysis screened 600 studies and analyzed eight of them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to conclude that semaglutide could improve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/liver-function-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver function tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and metabolic markers in people with NAFLD. Dr. Chichak explains, \u201cSemaglutide and other GLP-1 receptor agonists have been useful in managing fatty liver disease because of weight loss and metabolic improvements. Clinical trials suggest that they might decrease liver fat and inflammation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to semaglutide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/24\/2\/1703\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other GLP-1 medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide) and exenatide may also have a beneficial effect on fatty liver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/expanding-use-glp-1s\/\"><b>The expanding use of GLP-1s<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the published studies on GLP-1s and NAFLD suggest that more research is needed to better understand the effects these medications have on NAFLD. Dr. Chichak shares that, though many people take semaglutide without problems, treatment should always be initiated and monitored by a healthcare professional. \u201cThere may be some side effects, especially with the digestive system,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-insurance-cover-ozempic-for-fatty-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does insurance cover Ozempic for fatty liver disease?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance plans may not cover Ozempic if it\u2019s prescribed solely for fatty liver disease. Ozempic coverage depends on the insurance plan and the reason why it\u2019s prescribed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most major insurance plans, including some plans from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-united-healthcare-cover-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-blue-cross-blue-shield-cover-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Cross Blue Shield<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cover Ozempic for its FDA-approved uses, such as for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.
